I felt the sun burning against my cheek as I fought to open my eyes. I had slept HARD. So hard that no dreams had interrupted it. Not that I would have dreams anytime soon, more like nightmares. I was just happy that I slept.
It was then I noticed the light blue walls. I snapped up looking around only to remember everything that had happened coming back to me.
I was alone. My sisters were with another family and I was here alone in a house full of wolves I didn't know.
I yawned looking around the room. It was a beautiful room. White plush carpet covered the floor and white curtains stood out against the baby blue walls. My bed was covered in grey bedding and Miriam's was a light purple.
I have to say this bed was soooo comfortable. It still wasn't MY bed though.
Still looking around the room I remembered what Miriam had told me last night. I looked for a clock but couldn't find any. I had left my phone when I left home. I let out a deep exasperated sigh and threw myself back on the bed. I'll just lay here and pity myself. I haven't been able to do that at all. I haven't had to time to grieve or to take in anything. I feel like a rag doll being tossed around. 'Ok Lydia, take this day or maybe this week to wallow in your sorrows but after that we need to be strong and push forward. It's what mom and dad would want.' I told myself. I wonder if they were watching me right now.
I rolled over and hugged my pillow as I welcomed the tears that fell.
After a while I decided to pull myself out of bed. I wasn't sure how much time had passed but they couldn't possibly be upset for me taking some time for myself.
Just then the door flew open with Miriam standing there eyes wide. "Whoa! that is a LOT of hair!" she gasped.
s**t. I had forgotten about my unusual hair length. "Uh yeah I've never cut it" I explained.
"Never?" she looked shocked.
"Um....yeah.....I wasn't allowed, my mom...." I stopped not being able to finish that sentence. Miriam nodded in understanding and looked down. I didn't want her to feel bad, she didn't know. "It's ok, I know how to put it up so it won't get in the way. What time is it?" I asked trying to changed the mood. She seemed relieved, the sparkle returning to her eyes, as she looked back up.
"It's actually only 11am but I wanted to check on you. Are you hungry?"
That's sweet of her. "A little. I'll get dressed and meet you downstairs."
She nodded turning to leave only then to turn back around. "Oh yeah, since you can't mind link with the rest of us here is a cell phone. I put in all of the contacts you'll need with their ranks next to them. I figured that would help until you get familiar with everyone. You can text me as much as you need to if you feel uncomfortable saying anything out loud. The Alpha wanted to make sure you had a form of communication in case no one was around."
"Thank you so much! I left my phone at.....well you know. Just... thank you" I smiled. She returned the smile and left.
The Alpha doesn't seem so bad now. I wonder if I will meet him downstairs. I have so many questions that need to be answered.
Putting my thoughts aside I put my phone down, got dressed and made sure to put my hair up in a way hiding it's length. I inspected myself in the mirror. I chose a simple navy t-shirt and faded blue jeans. My hair was up in a braided bun. Satisfied, I left the room.
Walking out of the elevator I was greeted with silence. That's odd, I thought I would have at least run into a few people by now.
I walked down the hallway into the main entrance. Now that I have had rest I was able to get a better look at the place. I knew it was going to be grand but wow.
To the right of the wooden entrance doors was a large kitchen. Next to it were 8 long tables and chairs and on the other side of the room were ten more tables and chairs. 'The dining area is right when you walk in. Makes sense for wolves' I chuckled to myself. The entire room was surrounded by walls of windows letting in plenty of light. It was breathtaking. Out of curiosity I looked up. Of course there were five chandeliers spread across the room. I shouldn't be surprised. A place like this had to be spectacular to house this many wolves.
I looked over at Miriam who was in the kitchen preparing lunch. "Are you cooking for everyone all by yourself?" I asked. No way could she be cooking for all of these wolves alone. As I approached her I noticed just one meal in front of her.
"No silly, It takes about twenty of us. Everyone had an early lunch due to training. Everyone also figured you'd like a little time before you were bombarded. This is your lunch." She said, placing the plate on the bar in front of me "You'll see everyone else at dinner."
I cringed internally. "Oh that's really nice of you all." I said letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
Miriam giggled shaking her head "You're so polite for someone who just had a change of life experience."
"Well life moves on doesn't it? You all welcomed us here when we had no where to go and now you are respecting my personal space. I just really appreciate it." I confessed.
"We? I'm sorry I wasn't told much about you before you came here" she said honestly.
"Oh...I have three little sisters. The family they were placed with didn't want me so the Alpha offered me a place here" my voice cracked at the end.
A look of anger flashed over her face before she replied "Well you are definitely welcome here. I will be your guide" she said dramatically grabbing my arm while waving her other arm around the room making me laugh. "There that's better! Now eat up and unfortunately I have to put you to work after but no worries. A lot of us girls agreed to cover most of your chores for the day so you won't be completely overwhelmed."
I beamed at her response "Thank you! I honestly don't mind working, it will help keep my mind busy."
She nodded and left me to eat. I could only finish half of it. My nerves were taking over just thinking about dinner. Miriam was doing her best to help me feel more comfortable which really gave me hope that it wouldn't be so bad here. The fact that the other girls decided to help me before meeting me only helped me to think that I could really make some true friends here.
Miriam texted me to meet her on the third floor. I responded asking if she possibly had a pair of earphones I could borrow. I felt bad asking for more but I needed some music to help drown out my thoughts.
When I reached the third floor Miriam was smiling holding out a pair of earphones. I grabbed them excitedly thanking her as I did. She told me that it was no big deal and she's happy to get me anything I need.
"Alright so everyday we clean a different floor. There are only twenty of us girls who strictly take care of the house. Well, now you too of course." she giggled "There are fifty rooms on each floor which seem like a lot but it goes by fast. We clean every room and the bathrooms once a week explaining why we break it up by floor. We also prepare all the meals. As you can see it's a lot. Not to mention the amount of laundry. Today you will just clean the three bedrooms and bathrooms over there. After you are finished just come down to help with dinner and that's it."
I took it all in and nodded "Wow that is a lot of work. I can manage no problem. Are you sure you won't need help anywhere else?" I asked. They really were cutting me some slack today.
"Promise! We are used to it so it goes by quickly. Just text me if you need any help. Here are all the supplies you'll need." she smiled and walked into one of the rooms.
Okay this shouldn't be so bad. I'm glad my mom taught me how to clean house instead of spoiling me. I would always complain but now I understand. Sadness was starting to consume me again. I quickly put in my headphones, gathered the stuff I needed and headed to the first room.
The first two rooms went by pretty quickly. They each had two beds and a bathroom. Whoever lived there knew how to clean up after themselves. Those thoughts swiftly disappeared when I came to the last room.
This place was disgusting! There were clothes, cans and water bottles all over the room. It smelled like dirty feet. I had to hold my breath. Ok, if the girls cleaned these rooms every week then why did they give me the nasty one. Unless...are there rooms worse than this? 'No way' I thought, shaking my head.
I looked over and saw three beds. At the back of the room was the bathroom. Dare I look inside? I slowly approached and held back a gag. The people who live here better hope I don't run into them. They will get a mouthful.
I put my headphones back in and turned on Slipknot. I needed some serious music to push my way through this. The song Nero Forte came on and gave me the energy I needed. I started gathering up all of the laundry and stripping the beds.
After I finished vacuuming I made the beds and tidied up the rest of the room. I stopped what I was doing when I felt my phone vibrate. Thinking it was Miriam I pulled it out. It was a text but not from Miriam.
"Lydia, I need you to come by my office after dinner. I would like to speak with you. -Alpha" Oh wow he does exist. Maybe I can finally get some questions answered. I could feel my excitement bubbling until I got back to reality. It was time.....the bathroom.
So far I was pretty proud of myself. This bathroom was going to be spotless. It was taking me a while but I was enjoying myself. All I had left to clean was the shower.
While I was scrubbing, Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles came on. I couldn't help myself as I started singing along pushing my problems aside. I swayed in the shower singing, dancing, and scrubbing away all the dirt along with my sadness temporarily.
As the song was coming to an end I began to sing louder not having a care in the world. I went to do a twirl only to stop dead in my tracks.
Three guys were in the bathroom staring at me wide eyed with goofy smiles plastered on their faces. I must have looked like they ate live baby ducks in front of me because they all burst out laughing while I just stood there in horror. I could feel my anger rising with every laugh as I pulled my headphones out stepping out of the shower.
"Do you all live in this room?" I raised my voice slightly. They were still snickering. "You guys are pigs! I'm shocked I haven't gotten sick but who knows the day isn't over!" I bit out crossing my arms. I was fuming.
The guys stopped laughing. They were all kinda cute. They had shaggy curly black hair and dark brown eyes. They were tall, my guess around six foot and they looked similar yet different.
The one with the fuller lips spoke first "Hey calm down we know we're disgusting but isn't this your job?" he stated the fact. That only fueled my anger.
Before I could respond the one with freckles started talking "Shut up Gideon she does have a point. You leave your soda cans everywhere."
"Seriously Gabriel, whose water bottles are thrown all over?" the one with the pointed nose snapped out.
Suddenly they all started to bicker. What did I start? Before I could stop myself I started giggling. I couldn't help it. Watching three grown men argue like children was entertaining.
They all stopped and stared at me annoyed. "Ok! Ok! That made up for it!" I said still laughing.
Once I stopped the one called Gabriel started to talk "If it means anything we have never seen our room this clean before. It's pretty amazing actually." I smiled with pride. "What's your name?" he asked.
"Lydia, I'm new here" I responded. They all gaped at me. Fantastic......they must know. Let me save them the trouble. "Yes I'm the human born to wolves. No I wasn't adopted. No there is nothing wrong with me and no I won't be taking anyone's s**t because I've grown up with wolves my whole life. Anymore questions?"
They stood there in shock with smiles slowly spreading on there faces. "Oh I like this this girl!" the one with the pointed nose said nudging Gabriel.
I smiled "Who are you guys? You are obviously related."
The one with the pointed nose answered "Yeah we are triplets. I'm Gunther, that's Gideon and that's Gabriel. We are also Thetas." He said that last part smugly. I have a feeling these guys are quite the handful.
"How old are you Lydia?" Gideon asked.
"I Just turned 17 last month" I smiled. Wait, what time is it?
"Well it was nice meeting you guys but I'm pretty sure I need to get downstairs" I said. I grabbed my phone and saw it was almost 5pm. s**t dinner is at 6pm, I better move. I walked past them after cleaning up the bathroom. They all yelled thanks at the same time as I left the bedroom. I put the supplies away and headed downstairs.
"Hey girl!" Miriam called out as I entered the kitchen.
The other girls stopped what they were doing and smiled. There were a chorus of 'Hi's'.
"Hi everyone! I'm so sorry I'm late. I got caught up in the last room." I rolled my eyes and Miriam noticed.
"Whose was it?" she asked raising an eyebrow.
"Those triplet Theta guys" I replied. They all started laughing with a few girls rolling there eyes.
"Oh those guys, yeah they are a major pain in the ass" Miriam laughed.
"We heard that!" the guys called out running past us stealing some food. A few of the girls swatted at them as they hurried out the front door. I laughed and started helping with the prep.
I met all of the girls but it was going to take time to learn their names. Claira stood out instantly to me. She had fiery red curly hair with light green eyes. She seemed like the kind of girl that took no nonsense. She was also very funny and outspoken. I knew we would get along just fine.
Tara was a quiet girl with shoulder length black hair and hazel eyes. She was very shy but always had a smile on her face.
They were all Omegas and they were young. No one was over the age of 25 and they were all unmated. I felt myself starting to relax around them as we talked and laughed.
After helping to set the table I grabbed the trash to take it out. Miriam tried to stop me but I insisted. As I walked out the back door everyone was starting to make their way inside. I stayed outside for a few minutes taking a few breaths before I met everyone. 'You can do this Lydia' I encouraged myself.
I walked back inside hearing the hundreds of voices coming from the main room. Nerves started to wrack my body as I drew closer.
As I entered the room everyone stopped talking for a minute before getting back to what they were doing. I kept my head down and walked over to the kitchen island by Miriam.
"Hey could you take this dish to our table on the other side of the room please" she begged.
"Of course" I smiled. I picked up the very hot dish filled with casserole. Thank you to whoever invented oven mitts.
As I made my way across the large room I could feel a pair of eyes on me. I know almost everyone was probably looking at me trying to figure me out but this was different. It honestly felt like someone was glaring at me intensely from behind. The hairs on the back of my neck started to stand up.
Once I was halfway across the room the triplets were beside me teasing and asking if they could help. I told them I got it and to just move.
Gunther laughed putting his arm around my shoulders playfully. I laughed and threatened to burn him if he and his brothers didn't move. Before I could get a response a a loud growl ripped through the room.
"GET OFF OF HER!"
I jumped dropping the casserole all over my arms. I cried out as the thick red sauce spilled down my arms. Distracted by the throbbing, I didn't realized the room had gone quiet and the triplets were no longer around me.
A hand reached out grabbing my left arm. Sparks shot through me and I flinched from the sensation. I looked up into a pair of gorgeous golden brown eyes. They were strong and filled with anger slowly turning dark.......... I swallowed.
Before I could ask who he was or what was happening I was pulled out of the room.
