Battle in the Moonlight The sun had barely set when the forest grew unnaturally quiet. Kim’s senses were sharp, almost painfully so—the bond with Eden thrummed through her veins, warning her of every movement, every shadow. She stood beside him at the edge of the clearing, her mark glowing faintly on her wrist. The rogues had returned, more numerous this time, their intent clear: take her, take her power, and weaken the pack. Eden’s wolf form crouched low beside her, muscles tensed like coiled steel. His eyes glowed in the twilight, scanning every tree, every shadow. “Stay close,” he said, his voice low but firm. “I’m not staying behind,” Kim replied. Her heart hammered in her chest, adrenaline mixing with fear—and something else: excitement. This was the moment she had been preparing for without even knowing it. Before Eden could respond, the first rogue leapt from the shadows. Faster than the eye could follow, a blur of claws and steel aimed straight at Kim. She barely had time to react. The mark flared, a surge of energy rippling through her body. She raised her hands instinctively—and a blast of force shot outward, slamming the rogue against a tree. Leaves and bark splintered in every direction. Eden growled, shifting to intercept another attacker. The two fought as a single unit. His wolf form was fluid and brutal, every movement precise. Kim’s energy pulsed in rhythm with him, her strikes knocking rogues back with a power she was still learning to control. “Watch the flank!” Eden snapped, noticing three rogues circling from the trees. Kim twisted in midair, sending a wave of force that hurled one rogue into a thick branch. Another lunged, claws extended, but she sidestepped, grabbing his arm and flinging him to the ground. Her heart pounded, sweat stinging her eyes, but every move felt right. Every attack, every defense, was guided by the bond and the strange, thrilling energy that had awakened inside her. Then Eden roared, a sound that shook the clearing. He launched himself at the largest rogue—a man scarred and cruel-eyed—knocking him backward. The rogue swung a sword at Eden midair, but Kim reacted before she even thought. A pulse of energy shot from her palm, colliding with the sword, making it fly from his hand. The rogue stumbled, stunned by the force, and Eden struck him down with a single, precise blow. Breathing heavily, Kim looked around. Only a few rogues remained, but they were bigger, faster, more desperate. One of them rushed toward her, claws extended. Kim didn’t hesitate. She focused, letting the energy flow through her fully, feeling the mark’s power burn bright on her skin. A shockwave burst from her, sending the rogue flying into the underbrush. Eden moved to her side, placing a protective hand on her shoulder. “You’re incredible,” he said, his eyes filled with both awe and worry. “But don’t overdo it.” Kim’s chest heaved. “I’m fine,” she said, but the truth was she could feel her strength waning. The bond was powerful, but exhausting. Every second spent using the mark drained her energy. Then a shadow moved above them—a rogue descending from the trees. Kim barely had time to react as he landed between them, claws ready to strike. Eden growled and lunged, but Kim acted first. She focused all her energy, feeling it radiate outward like molten fire. The rogue hit the force head-on and screamed as he was thrown back into the trees, the impact echoing through the forest. Breathing heavily, Kim fell to one knee. Her mark glowed brightly, then dimmed as her body finally began to tire. Eden was immediately at her side, shifting back to human form, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “You’re pushing yourself too hard,” he said, concern sharp in his voice. Kim looked up at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “I… I can’t just stand by,” she said. “Not when they came for me. Not when they came for us.” Eden’s eyes softened, and he pulled her closer. “And you won’t. That’s why I chose you. You’re not just my mate, Kim. You’re my equal.” The rogues were retreating now, weakened and intimidated by the display of power. One last howl echoed in the distance—a warning that more might come—but for now, the forest was theirs. Kim sank to the ground, exhausted but alive. Eden knelt beside her, wrapping a protective arm around her. She leaned against him, heart still racing, adrenaline still buzzing in her veins. “You were amazing,” he whispered. “Stronger than I ever imagined.” Kim managed a tired smile. “I… I couldn’t have done it without you.” Eden shook his head, pressing his forehead to hers. “No. You did this. I was just beside you. You are the mark. You are the power. And now, you’ve proven it.” For the first time, Kim believed it. The battle was over—for now—but the forest still whispered of dangers to come. Kim knew the rogues would not give up. Her past, her bloodline, and her growing powers were still a target. But something had changed. She was no longer afraid. She was ready. And with the Alpha by her side, there was nothing in the world she couldn’t face.
