Pained memories
“Miranda I don’t know what we’re supposed to do, Jackson’s only five and he’s already able to use his magic. The pack is uneasy and I know the rogues will want the power he carries.” Kevin said anxiously to Miranda.
“Kevin I think our only option is to take him to the lake Bakail coven maybe they can help us”.
It’s been 13 years since my parents and brothers died. It was a horrible accident. I was 5 at the time, we had been on our way home from our annual camping trip. That year we journeyed to Lake Baikal, Russia. I don’t remember much of the trip but know that it was important to them, mom and dad. Mom said that our future survival depended on it. Though at 5 I didn’t quite understand what she meant.
Flashback
We had boarded the small bush plane with no incident. Then an hour into the flight the captain came over the speaker in a panicked tone and told everyone to fasten their seatbelts we were making an emergency landing. Mom looked over at me holding the pendant around her neck, she was whispering something I couldn’t make out. As I turned to look out the window I could see trees wiping by my window. Dread slowly filled my body as I realized we were going to crash into the side of a mountain. I screamed for my mom, then there was darkness.
I’m not sure how long I had laid there on the small outcropping of stone but when I awoke I was not cold. I turned my body towards the crackling noise and found I was mere feet away from the burning fuselage the heat passing over me in waves. I appeared to be unscathed from the accident. I looked around and called for my family but there was only dead silence. I was scared, alone and lost.
Meanwhile
Charles had just walked back into our cabin after the emergency meeting with the lake Baikal coven. “Beth” he said with worry etched on his face “it doesn’t look good, Jackson is already showing signs of being a hybrid. He is strong and Miranda is afraid they’re going to come after him.”
As soon as he told me this a chill ran down my spine and my pendant started to burn. Something was not right, Miranda was reaching out to me, I had to find Jackson. Amelia then walked in the room yawning with a stretch greeting her father with a small tired smile. “Hi daddy! Are you here to tuck me into bed?” She asked at only 5 she had her father wrapped around her little finger.
I could feel that Miranda had activated the locator spell on her pendant, I knew they were heading home from the coven. I feared something must’ve gone wrong. Our Coven had warned us about Miranda breeding with an alpha werewolf. But she was his destined mate. There was no stopping the love they shared for each other. Their elder boys Josiah and Joshua never showed signs of carrying the gene of a witch. Miranda’s husband Kevin was the alpha of the largest pack in Northern America. Though he had the support of them they couldn’t help the unease they felt when Jackson started showing signs of being a hybrid.
“Charles I have to find him!” I said
“Go my love and be safe, I will take Amelia back to bed” with that he gave me a passionate kiss, rested his forehead on mine and told me he loved me.
I used a teleportation spell and tracked the pendant Miranda had activated. The image before my eyes horrified me the plane was ablaze the only noise of the crackling fire. That’s when I found him curled on the ground crying, poor Jackson. He was a spitting image of my first love, Kevin Bradshaw. A little boy – With ash blonde hair and eyes as grey as a winter storm. He looked up at me with confusion and fear. I reached out to him and he came to my arms and sobbed. I held him until he fell asleep. I made sure that we were not being watched and teleported back to the cabin. I could feel it, the binding spell Lake Bakail had placed on him held in his powers and masked his alpha scent. This was his only saving grace.
We decided to take Amelia and Jackson and move to Airdrie, Alberta. There was only a small coven on the outskirts of town that agreed to hide us. The local pack was private about their affairs. They never bothered with new comers. Charles and I agreed to keep our gifts from the children for the time being. They are both still so young. Charles was a formidable warlock, and I was a level 3 white witch. I now came just below the North American High Priestess. Miranda was next in line to that throne, now with her gone I guess it will fall to me. Luckily our Priestess Gezza was still capable of leading us for many years more. Hopefully long enough for Amelia to grow and learn the craft. I had very I hopes for our daughter. We had brought Amelia to Lake Bakail to have her abilities tested. At 5 she had so much promise.
Present
“Jackson! Have I been talking to my self this entire time?” Amelia pouted at me. I must have drifted off remembering the tragedy of my child hood. I was not prepared to go thru another year not knowing who I was or where I came from.
“I’m sorry Amelia you know I’ve got a lot going on this week. I’ve got that play in drama class we’re preparing to set up and the sound department is in a disarray as Mrs Crunk keeps changing her mind on the music”
“Right! I forgot about that. Why does she do this every year?” Amelia whined. “She should know what music to use, she does the same damn play every year!”
“I know” I replied. I turned around to grab my laptop out of my locker so that I could have everything ready for the final run through with Mrs Crunk. I bid Amelia goodbye and headed to the drama room to finish the last touches.
“Please don’t forget our birthday Jackson!” Amelia reminded me as I left the hallway.
“Mrs Crunk?” I called, I could hear some rustling behind the curtain then Scarlett appeared.
“Oh it’s just you,” she said flustered. “Mrs Crunk said she had to run out for a bit and to tell you that you could handle the last little bit on your own.” Miguel then stepped out from behind the curtain then adjusting his shirt.
“Umm hi Jackson, how are you?” Miguel asked with a look of embarrassment. He knew Amelia and I were best friends, and that Amelia was head over heels for him. He had been leading her on for the last month. I had always been suspicious of his intentions. Well at least now I knew, and he knew he was treading on thin ice. I’d do anything to protect Amelia.
“Apparently a lot better than you are, what’s the meaning of this? Weren’t you just telling Amelia how much you liked her? Now you’re here fooling around with Scarlett?” I bombarded him with my questions, I was livid.
“W-what do you mean you like Amelia?” Scarlett whispered. “I thought you wanted to make us official Migeul?”
He quickly turned to Scarlett, “well it sort of just happened. She was my lab partner for that science assignment. What can I say she’s cute and smart and there just something that’s been drawing me to her lately. Scarlett glared at Miguel and stormed off out of the theatre.
“Miguel I swear I’ll kick your butt if you hurt Amelia in any way!” I warned him. To say I cared about Amelia’s feelings was an understatement. She was like the little sister I never had. Amelia’s parents had taken me in after I was found alone on that mountainside.
“Don’t worry I know Jackson” he said exasperated. “It just feels like we’re meant to be is all!” Miguel was careful not to disclose his current predicament. He’d also be turning 18 and for him that meant finding his mate.
