Chapter Six

1043 Words
Kyle was barely aware of how he got into Theron’s car or how they arrived at Adrian’s house. He felt numb to everything around him. The world passed in a blur. He still felt hard to believe that his mother was actually dead. What was he going do now? Where does he go from here? These were the questions that plagued Kyle's mind. He had just lost his only remaining family and he doesn't even know what to do with himself. “Kyle, we’re here,” Theron said, snapping him out of his thoughts. Kyle nodded as he got out of the car and began walking towards the mansion. “Kyle,” Theron called again, making him stop. “I’m sorry for your loss. I just want you to know that if you ever need anything, just let me know.” Kyle didn’t respond. He continued walking until he entered the mansion. He was about to head to his room when he heard Adrian’s voice. It sounded like he was on the phone with someone. His voice felt like a gentle hum in Kyle's rowdy mind. Before Kyle realized it, his feet were moving towards Adrian’s wing. He stopped in front of his door, and knocked. “Come in,” Adrian’s voice answered. Kyle entered, closing the door behind him. Adrian’s piercing hazel eyes landed on him. “Can I help you?” Adrian asked. “Um…” Kyle pulled out the envelope and placed it on the table. “My mom wanted me to give you this. She made me promise no one else would see it but you.” “If she was so adamant about secrecy,” Adrian leaned back in his chair as he watched Kyle closely, “why didn’t she deliver it herself?” “Because she’s… um…” Kyle paused. Saying it out loud would make it real and he wasn't sure he was ready to hear it come from his own mouth. Adrian c****d an eyebrow at him, urging him to go on. “She's......gone.” Kyle muttered. Adrian frowned confused. “Gone, as in?” Kyle rolled his eyes feeling slightly irritated by Adrian's oblivion. You know what, nevermind. Just—there is your envelope. I'm leaving now.” Just as Kyle was about to leave. Someone knocked at the door. “Come in.” Adrian said, staring at Kyle. Reed enters. When he sees Kyle he gives him a pitiful look, before walking over to Adrian. He leaned over and whispered something in his ear. Adrian turned to Kyle as his eyes widen. Kyle immediately knew that Adrian just found out about his mother's death. If the expression of the man who walked in wasn't sign enough, then the way Adrian was looking at him now definitely convinced him. Kyle was not looking for any pity right now, especially not from Adrian. So he quickly turns, ready to leave the office as fast as he can, but unfortunately luck seemed not to be on his side today. “Kyle, wait.” Adrian called. Squashing all Kyle's plans to slip away from him. Kyle sighed and turned back. “What?” He gave Adrian a blank stare. There was no anger behind his reply—just pure exhaustion. Adrian hesitated before standing and rounding the desk until he stood in front of him. “Are you okay?” Kyle looked up and saw genuine concern in Adrian’s eyes—something he never thought a vampire capable of feeling. Maybe it was that look, or the frustration he’d been carrying for so long, but the tears he’d been holding back finally broke loose. Kyle collapsed into Adrian’s arms, breaking apart in harsh, uncontrollable sobs. Adrian stiffened, caught completely off guard as the shaking human clung to him. He had never known how to handle tears, never known what to say in moments like this—but the anguish radiating from Kyle squeezed at something deep in his chest. Instinct overruled thought as his arms came up on their own. Carefully, Adrian wrapped his arms around him, rubbing slow circles on his back. “It’s okay,” he murmured again and again, stroking Kyle’s hair and whispering soothing words until his harsh sobs faded into quiet sniffles. “Kyle, you should get some rest,” Adrian said gently, trying to pull away. Kyle shook his head, refusing to let go. “I’m not sleepy.” With a resigned sigh, Adrian lifted him bridal-style and carried him to his room. Kyle buried his face in Adrian’s neck, his scent overwhelming the vampire’s senses. His fingers traced lazy circles along Adrian’s skin, making him groan as he struggled to maintain control. Adrian quickened his pace, determined to get Kyle to bed before temptation overwhelmed him. He laid Kyle—who had not even registered that he wasn't in his own room, down. He turned to leave but Kyle grabbed his shirt. “Stay with me,” he murmured. Adrian hesitated, desire dulling his reason. “That’s not a good idea, Kyle.” “Please,” Kyle begged, tugging on his shirt. Lust flared in Adrian’s eyes as Kyle put his lower lip in his mouth. Adrian couldn't help following the movement with his eyes. “Fine,” he muttered, lying beside him. Kyle traced circles over Adrian’s chest. “Sorry about your shirt,” he whispered, referring to Adrian's tear stained shirt. “It’s fine.” “Can I tell you something?” Kyle asked softly. Adrian nodded. “It’s my fault my mother is dead.” Adrian frowned. “How so?” Kyle couldn’t meet his eyes, biting his lip as if to hold himself together. “We had an argument,” he murmured. “I said I wished she’d died instead of my dad… and now she has.” His voice cracked. “I can’t stop thinking the universe took me seriously.” Tears slipped free. Adrian lifted Kyle’s chin. “It’s not your fault. And we’ll find whoever did this.” Kyle nodded. Their gazes locked. Then Kyle leaned forward and brushed his lips against Adrian’s. He quickly pulled away gasping. “I—I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—” Adrian crushed their mouths together.
