Chapter Two

1198 Words
Kyle woke up the next day with a splitting headache, no doubt from all the crying he had done the night before. He lets out a groan, grabbing his head as he left his bed and walked into the bathroom. “Great, I look like s**t,” he muttered, staring at his his reflection in the mirror. He splashed water on his face and took a quick shower. He got dressed and went downstairs. The house was utterly silent. The dinner table was already set. He peeked into the kitchen and found his mother standing there, her body resting against the counter. “Hey, Mom,” Kyle entered the kitchen but making sure to stay a good distance away from her. Mum, I really am sorry for what I said last night. I really didn't mean it.” He explained, but there was no response. He sighed and walked closer. “Mum, please talk to me.” He grabbed her shoulder, and she immediately collapsed to the ground, shivering, her body cold to the touch. “Mum, Mum!” Kyle screamed, kneeling beside her as he shook her shoulders. “What’s wrong with you?” “C-c-call T-t-Theron,” Carissa stammered weakly before going limp in his arms. Kyle rushed to her bag, grabbing her phone with trembling hands as he searched for Theron’s name. He found it written in bold letters with a heart beside it, but there was no time to think about that. Kyle dialed the number. “Hello,” a deep voice answered on the first ring. “I need to talk to Theron,” Kyle shouted into the phone. “Who is this?” the person on the line asked. “My mum j-just collapsed. She needs help,” he stammered, his voice cracking. “I’m on my way,” Theron said, ending the call. Kyle ran back to the kitchen and held his mum, not knowing what else to do. He couldn't take her to a hospital because they are all controlled by Vampires. “Mum, please stay alive. Please stay alive,” he muttered as tears burned his cheeks and fell freely. He felt useless. There was nothing he could do except pray that help would come. Less than ten minutes later, Theron burst into the house, his vampire hearing helping him find Kyle easily. “Carissa,” Theron rushed into the kitchen, lifting her limp body from Kyle’s arms and carrying her outside. Kyle followed closely behind as Theron placed Carissa in the back seat of his car and gestured for Kyle to follow. Kyle sat beside his mother, placing her head on his lap as he rocked her gently. Theron stopped in front of a white building. He opened the passenger door and carried Carissa inside. Kyle followed, refusing to be separated from his mother. They entered the building, where people who looked like doctors and nurses took Carissa from Theron and placed her on a wheeled bed, rushing her into a room. Kyle tried to follow, but they wouldn’t let him. “Please, let me stay with her!” Kyle screamed, struggling as Theron held him back. “Kyle, please relax. You can't go in with her. Theron explained, but Kyle wouldn’t listen. His ears rang, and all he could think about was his mother. “She's in good hands, Kyle.” “You don’t know that!” Kyle screamed, shoving Theron away as he paced in front of the room. His mind flashed back to his father’s death, and the thought of also losing his mother made it very hard to breath. “Kyle, breathe, please,” Theron begged, but Kyle ignores him as he continued pacing. He couldn't bring himself to speak. Infact, he could hardly hear Theron's voice as he tried to calm him. All he wanted right now was for his Mom to be okay. “Kyle,” Theron called, but Kyle ignored him. His voice seemed so far away. Theron reach forward to lay a hand on Kyle, hoping it would help calm him down. “Don’t ever come close to me, you bloodsucker,” Kyle snapped. “my father is dead because of your kind, and don’t insult me by acting ignorant about what happened to my mother.” Theron frowned. “Look, I know you don’t like me, but—” “Don’t like you?” Kyle cut him off. “I despise you and your kind. You are all monsters,” he said, glaring at him. “Whatever. You still need to rest. If you would just come with me—” “Why? So you can turn me into a blood bag and slap a collar on me? I bet you’d like that,” He sneered. Anger flashed in Theron’s eyes, and for a moment, fear gripped Kyle but he didn't let it show—never. “Believe it or not, I promised your mother that I would take care of you—which includes making sure you don’t get killed,” Theron stated, his voice calm and steady. Kyle scoffed, folding his arms across his chest. “And how do you intend to protect me from being sucked dry by the thousands of Vampires around.” Theron gave him a frustrated look. “Why don’t you just let me take you home so you can—” “Excuse me.” A man in a white lab coat interrupted, looking between Theron and Kyle. “Are you two related to the patient?” “I’m the patient’s son,” Kyle rushed forward. “Is she okay?” “Well,” the doctor drawled, “she is—for now. But she isn’t out of the woods yet. We’re still examining her.” “Can I see her?” The doctor glanced at Theron, as if asking for permission, making Kyle glare at him. “Of course,” The doctor said, turning back to Kyle. “But don’t stay too long. For all we know, what she has might be contagious.” Kyle nodded as the doctor led them to her room. He broke down in tears when he saw his mother awake. “Mum,” he whispered, his voice trembling as he walked to her bedside. “Hey, baby,” she murmured, giving him a weak smile. “I’m so sorry, Mum. I shouldn’t have said that to you last night. I’m so happy you’re alive,” he rambled as tears streamed down his face. “Shh, it’s fine,” she said softly. “I’m not mad at you.” She weakly lifted her hand and wiped the tears from his cheeks. “Carissa,” Theron said as he sat on the edge of the bed, taking her other hand. “How are you feeling?” “Like s**t,” she replied, trying to chuckle, but it turned into a coughing fit. Theron rubbed her hand affectionately. It took everything Kyle had not to shove Theron away from his mother. Though he knew Theron wouldn’t budge, even if he tried. Instead, he kissed his mother’s hand and gave her a smile. He needed to be strong for her.
