Chapter Four

Adrian walked back to his office after his meeting with Kyle and Theron. He was breathing heavily, eyes blazing with anger as he paced up and down. “Why?” he roared, turning his desk upside down, all its contents falling to the floor. “Of all beings who could be my mate, it had to be a frail human.” He spat the words with hate. “I can’t.” He shook his head, murmuring to himself. “I won’t accept that human as my mate. I have to reject him.” That night, Adrian could not sleep. His mind kept drifting to Kyle—how his scent had been different when he came with Theron, how Adrian could hear Kyle’s blood pumping through his veins when he went downstairs. At first, all he had wanted was to taste Kyle’s blood, turn him into his pet or something. But then Theron had reminded him of his promise, so he knew he had to uphold his word. All he wanted was to make sure the boy had not inherited whatever his mother had. That was why he had held his face. But the moment his hand connected with the boy’s skin, he felt it—a surge of electricity like no other, a sweet feeling that could only mean one thing. The boy had been bonded to him. He had found his mate. At that moment, he did not know what to say or how to react. He let go of the boy’s face immediately. But what surprised Adrian most was the fact that the boy seemed to have felt it too. He could hear the boy’s heartbeat quicken as he gasped. Adrian let out a groan, leaving his bed. If he couldn’t sleep, he might as well find something to do. He began walking around the top floor of his palace, admiring the artwork that dated back centuries. He could not tell how he ended up in front of Kyle’s bedroom. He stood outside the door, contemplating whether to knock or not, but eventually decided against it and went to his library instead. He took out one of his favorite books, hoping to distract himself from thinking about Kyle, but he couldn’t concentrate. His mind kept drifting back to him. “Stop it, Adrian,” he scolded himself. “You’re acting like a teenager.” With a groan, he closed the book and began skimming through the shelves filled with books. He heard the door to the library open, and that sweet scent of Kyle’s blood filled the air. “Whoa,” Kyle breathed. “This is huge,” he said as he entered the library. Adrian stood in a dark corner, watching Kyle. It was the middle of the night, so he wondered what Kyle was doing awake at this hour. He was human—he should have been asleep. Kyle began to run his fingers along the spines of the books on the shelves, his expression full of awe. “Couldn’t sleep?” Adrian asked, startling Kyle. He turned toward Adrian’s voice just as Adrian stepped into the light. Kyle placed a hand on his chest and let out a breath. “Don’t scare me like that next time,” he scolded, bending over with one hand on his knee as he took deep breaths. “What are you doing awake so late?” Adrian asked, walking over to pick up the book Kyle had dropped. “Couldn’t sleep,” Kyle replied, finally composing himself. Adrian nodded as he placed the book back on the shelf. “Your library is huge,” Kyle blurted, admiring the massive room. “Seems like you read a lot.” “I do.” Adrian stared at him with piercing hazel eyes, making Kyle feel slightly uncomfortable, as he cleared his throat. He awkwardly turned back to the shelves and resumed running his fingers over the books. Some were covered in dust, showing how old they were, while some seemed to have been gotten recently. He lifted his head and paused when he saw a book titled Mates. He didn’t know why, but he immediately felt drawn to it. He stood on his toes, trying to reach it, but it was too high, and he was only 5'6". Reluctantly, he turned back to Adrian, who was seated at a desk, watching him. “Um, can you help me get it down?” he asked. Without a word, Adrian stood and walked over, caging Kyle between his arms. A shiver ran through Kyle’s body as he lifted his head to look at Adrian. He loved looking into his gorgeous eyes. Adrian met his gaze, causing Kyle to panic and turn around, his back now faced Adrian. Adrian retrieved the book and leaned down to Kyle’s ear. “Here is your book,” he whispered, making Kyle shiver and arch his back unintentionally. His backside brushed against Adrian, and Kyle closed his eyes as he arched further, causing him to press against him. Kyle let out a moan as Adrian's breath tickled his ears. You are playing a very dangerous game little human. Adrian whispered, causing Kyle's eyes to snap open as he realized what had just happened. He turned around quickly. “I’m so sorry,” he apologized, not knowing what else to say. He was blushing very hard as he turned to leave the library. “Kyle,” Adrian called out. Kyle turned around but avoided his gaze.“You forgot your book.” Kyle quickly took the book, turned, and ran out of the library. Adrian closed his eyes, gripping the table to stop himself from going after Kyle. He looked down and noticed he was hard—very hard—making him groan as he sank back into his chair, rubbing a hand over his face. “You just had to flirt with him, didn't you?” He muttered. How was he supposed to reject Kyle when he got this hard just from Kyle’s backside brushing against his d**k? Deep down, Adrian knew this was a losing game, and that scared him.
