Chapter one:New day, New battles
New day, New trouble Soft sunlight shining through Elara's bedroom window greeted her as she woke up. She could feel a sharp ache pulsing in her head as she blinked her eyes open. It wasn't from a crazy night out or drinking too much; rather, it was the outcome of her all-out work the day before. She had worked tirelessly day and night just so she could earn a decent living. She had gone above and beyond to meet deadlines and surpass expectations, as the demands of her workload had pushed her to the brink. She had no idea that her boyfriend Derrick was busy doing other things. Elara came home to commotion instead of a moment of rest, fatigued and longing for a break. Her house, which had always been tranquil, had become a scene from a party movie about college. The floor was covered in empty glasses, confetti, disposable plates and cups all scattered around the house She felt a surge of frustration and rage, but she knew she couldn't let it control her. Taking a deep breath and facing her fatigue head-on, she resolved to bring order back to her domain with steely determination. Equipped with cleaning tools and a resolute determination, She proceeded from room to room. She scrubbed, swept, and tidied each space meticulously, erasing any trace of the previous night's revelry. Thoughts of her boyfriend's negligence ran through Elara's head as she carefully cleared up the party's debris. She had spoken to him several times about how important it is to be to respect one another's personal space. But Derrick had completely disregarded their pact, throwing caution to the wind. It seemed as though he was going to wake up to a serious conversation. Elara yawned and extended her arms as she gradually awoke from her sleep. She swung her legs out of bed and firmly planted her feet on the floor, determination shining in her eyes. She headed to the living room, the silky carpet tickling her toes. She couldn't help but notice a familiar figure stretched out on the couch as she rounded the corner. Her partner Derrick was sound sleeping, letting out a gentle snore. Elara approached him with a look of both irritation and concern. She sighed and tapped Derrick on the shoulder in an attempt to wake him up. She whispered, "Derrick, wake up," with a hint of fear mixed with annoyance. "We need to talk." Derrick's eyes slowly opened, and he looked at her with a cocky grin. "What's up, babe?" he asked, his voice oozing with arrogance. "I see you finally found me, the king of parties!" Elara rolled her eyes, fighting the urge to give him a piece of her mind. "Listen, Derrick," she started, her voice firm. "I get that you like to have a good time, but this is getting out of control. I'm tired of cleaning up after your wild nights, and it's not fair to me." Derrick scoffed, his arrogance shining through. "Come on, babe, lighten up!" he retorted. "Partying is what life's all about. You're just being a buzzkill." She inhaled deeply as she made an effort to remain composed. Her voice firm, "Derrick, this isn't about being a buzzkill." It's about treating each other with decency and consideration. I want you to know how your actions impact our relationship and how I feel." Derrick's haughtiness persisted even as his expression softened. "Look Elara, i don't give a crap about what you think about me or my habits, i ain't a child anymore so, quit trying to boss me around" . "Derrick, really? Will you ever accept accountability for your deeds?" Elara lost it, her voice brimming with rage. "You trashed the place last night, and now you're taunting me?" With an air of rebellion mixed with superiority, Derrick laughed haughtily. He scoffed, "Come on, Elara, don't be so dramatic." "You ought to be appreciative that I assisted you in getting that job. Remember, you still have to pay me back." She became more irritated as her eyes contracted. "This is not related to the work, Derrick," she spit out, her tone brimming with disdain. The true problem here is being sidestepped and avoided by you. It's about your disrespect and unwillingness to own up to your errors." Dismissively, Derrick waved his hand. "Elara, whatever. He sneered, his haughtiness unwavering, "Stop bugging and go make me some hangover soup." Elara shook her head, feeling a wave of disappointment and sympathy at the same time. It dawned on her that Derrick was unwilling to grow or own up to his mistakes. She turned and went to the kitchen, walking with a sorrowful heart. She couldn't help but think about the circumstance as she was making the soup. Instead of demeaning her and using their previous favours as power, she deserved to be treated with respect and value. Elara, the soup ready, calmly but resolutely stepped back into the living room. She held the dish in front of Derrick and gave him a direct look. Elara felt a mixture of determination and frustration as she made her way back to her room following her encounter with Derrick. She was aware that she needed to put her needs first and ignore his contemptuous demeanour. She hurriedly showered, allowing the water to relieve the stress from the fight. She could not resist the need to eat while she got ready for work. But she chose to skip breakfast because she felt that her emotional health was more important than her hunger. As usual, Derrick didn't even try to find out how she was doing or if she needed anything. It was obvious that his ego and desires took precedence over Elara's feelings. But she was determined not to let his lack of interest defeat her. Elara got up and went out the door with a determined attitude, prepared to take on the day's obstacles. She had faith in her ability to overcome this challenge and focus on her own success. As Elara walked to her workplace, she couldn't help but feel free. She was determined to improve her life and leave her poisonous home behind so that she could be surrounded by kind and considerate people. Sadly, her coworkers didn't seem to share her hope for a fresh start when she arrived at work. She felt alone and unwelcome as they were always staring down at her. This is how it was as if she had brought the toxic atmosphere from home with her to work. Even worse, her supervisor confronted her about her tardiness right away. In the hopes that her supervisor would be understanding, Elara attempted to explain the situation, but he appeared uninterested and uncaring. He dismissed her argument without even listening to her. Her supervisor then requested her to get him a cup of coffee before letting her begin her normal responsibilities, showing little regard for her workload or sentiments. It was obvious that he had no regard for her professional boundaries or time. Elara was insulted and felt irritated, but she knew she had to remain calm. Elara reluctantly made the requested coffee run. The work made her feel that her qualifications and skills were being disregarded, and she couldn't shake that feeling. She wouldn't let this failure define her, though, because she kept telling herself that she was capable of so much more. She finished carrying out the coffee delivery and mentally readied herself to confront her boss in his office. Presumably because he felt she was readily used, she knew he had more job for her. She inhaled deeply as she walked into his office, handed him the coffee and in return he handed her over a bunch of files. "Sort them out as soon as possible, i want them in my desk within the next few hours". He commanded not minding the sour look on Elara's face. As she hurriedly left the office, she began ti murmur in anger. "Just a few hours to finish all this work, as if he could get it done in two days". On that particular day, she had the impression that everything was working against her. It was almost impossible for her to complete any work because her computer kept crashing. Her supervisor, of course, decided to add more responsibilities and deadlines on that particular day. How unfortunate is the timing! The air conditioning in the office decided to take a vacation, which made the situation worse. Can you picture attempting to concentrate and work effectively when you're perspiring profusely? Working in a sauna was how it felt! Elara was absolutely worn out by the time the conclusion of the day arrived. Both physically and mentally, she felt as though she had completed a marathon. Her only desire was to get into bed and close her eyes on the day's experiences. She chose to have a sleepover at her friend Kate's house after work since she simply didn't feel like coming home. Having a friend to confide in during trying times is usually pleasant. Elara couldn't help but confide in Kate about the frustrating things that had happened over the day as she got comfortable at her house. "You won't believe what happened to me today" . "Come on now, spill the beans you know i don't like being kept on a hold" . Inquisitive in her tone, Kate stated. "It has to do with Derrick; in the last few months, I've observed an unsettling shift in his demeanour. Derrick behaves in a way that goes beyond being mischievous. He is impolite, indolent, and obviously hurts me with his acts. Is it not unbelievable that he quit his job and spends his days sleeping, eating, partying, and generally making my life even more miserable? "No way" . Kate was shocked, and her eyes grew wide. Derrick had always seemed so nice and well-mannered that she hadn't anticipated to hear such news. Elara, though, had more to say. "What disturbed me even more was something I had observed the night before while working as a cleaner. I remember smelling the woman's scent in the air, and to my amazement, I also discovered hair extensions on the floor as well. "Elara, is there a possibility that Derrick is seeing someone else?" With a worried tone, she questioned. Elara sighed, not sure how to answer. "To be honest, Kate, I'm not quite sure," she answered, her tone slightly unsure. "There have been a few instances where he seemed distant and preoccupied, but I can't say for sure if there's someone else in the picture." Kate promised Elara right away, being the devoted and encouraging friend that she is. Elara, don't be alarmed. I will investigate this thoroughly. If there's anything to your suspicions, I'll definitely figure it out i promise. Elara's expression lit up with appreciation. She considered herself fortunate to have a friend like Kate who was always eager to lend a helping hand. "I'm grateful, Kate. I appreciate your help very much. I can handle whatever that comes my way since I know that you're on my side. As Elara lay in bed that night, her mind was filled with a whirlwind of questions. She couldn't help but wonder if her boyfriend was cheating on her. Thoughts raced through her head, keeping her wide awake. "What will I do if my suspicions are confirmed?" Extra worried, her thoughts turning to the potential fallout of such a revelation. She feared the pain and heartbreak that might follow. "Have I been too trusting? Should I have been more cautious?" Extra questioned herself, grappling with her own judgment. She wondered if she had been too naive, placing her faith in someone who didn't deserve it. With each passing moment, the questions multiplied, leaving Extra feeling restless and uncertain. She knew that eventually she would have to find the strength to face the truth, but for now, she could only lie there, lost in a sea of doubts and unanswered questions
