THE NEW BEGINNING
The early morning sun spread a golden glow across the magnificent campus of Royal Crest University, painting the tall academic buildings with warm light. Students, both new and returning, filled the walkways with excitement, dragging suitcases, carrying backpacks, and chatting eagerly about the adventures that awaited them. The atmosphere buzzed with fresh beginnings, nervous laughter, and endless possibilities. Among the sea of unfamiliar faces was Clara Johnson, an eighteen-year-old whose gentle beauty attracted attention without her even trying. She wasn't the type to wear expensive clothes or flashy jewelry. Instead, she dressed neatly in a simple sky-blue blouse, a black knee-length skirt, and comfortable black flats. Her long, dark braided hair rested gracefully on her shoulders, framing a face that reflected kindness, intelligence, and quiet confidence. Walking beside her were her parents, who had sacrificed so much to ensure she could attend one of the country's most prestigious universities. Her mother adjusted Clara's collar before smiling proudly. "You look beautiful," she said softly. Clara laughed. "Mum, you've said that at least five times this morning." "And I'll say it another five times if I want," Mrs. Johnson replied playfully. Mr. Johnson chuckled as he pushed the trolley carrying Clara's suitcase. "Your mother is right," he said. "But remember, beauty will open some doors. Your character will keep them open." Clara nodded respectfully. "I know, Dad." They finally reached the female hostel, where dozens of students were checking into their rooms. Parents hugged their children while hostel officials directed newcomers to their assigned accommodations. Mrs. Johnson suddenly became emotional. "It feels like yesterday when you were learning to write your name." Clara embraced her tightly. "I'll be fine, Mum." "I know you will." Mr. Johnson placed a reassuring hand on Clara's shoulder. "You've always been disciplined, Clara. University comes with freedom, but freedom also comes with responsibility." "I understand." "There will be people who encourage you to study," he continued, "and others who will encourage you to waste your future." Clara looked directly into his eyes. "I promise I won't disappoint you." "We're not asking for perfection," her father replied gently. "Just wisdom." After helping her settle into her room, her parents prayed with her before leaving. As their car disappeared through the university gate, Clara stood silently by the hostel window. For the first time in her life, she realized she was truly on her own. She took a slow breath and whispered to herself, "This is where my future begins." Just then, the door opened. A cheerful young woman entered carrying two large bags. She smiled immediately. "Hi! I guess we're roommates." Clara smiled back. "I guess we are." The girl dropped her bags dramatically. "My name is Sophia Adams, and please tell me you're friendly because I talk a lot." Clara laughed. "I'm Clara Johnson." "Perfect! I was worried I'd end up with someone who never speaks." Within minutes, the two girls were unpacking, exchanging stories about their families, favorite foods, and career dreams. "So," Sophia asked while arranging books on her shelf, "what are you studying?" "Medicine." Sophia's eyes widened. "Seriously? That's impressive." "I've wanted to become a doctor since I was a child." "What inspired you?" Clara became quiet for a moment. "My grandmother died because she couldn't get medical treatment on time. I was too young to understand everything, but I remember promising myself that one day I'd help people who needed someone to fight for them." Sophia smiled warmly. "I think you'll make an amazing doctor." "And what about you?" "I'm studying Mass Communication. I've always loved telling stories." "Then we're both chasing dreams." They laughed together, unaware that their friendship would soon become one of the strongest bonds either of them would ever know. Later that morning, the university organized an orientation program for all first-year students. Hundreds gathered inside the massive auditorium as lecturers introduced the school's rules, academic expectations, and opportunities available on campus. Clara listened attentively, taking notes while many students around her chatted among themselves. When the program ended, students poured into the registration hall to complete departmental documentation. The room quickly became crowded. Students moved from one queue to another, each trying to complete the process before closing time. Clara carefully balanced several textbooks and registration forms as she searched for the correct desk. Without warning, someone walking in the opposite direction accidentally collided with her. The books slipped from her hands and scattered across the polished floor. "Oh no!" she exclaimed, immediately kneeling to gather them. At the same moment, another pair of hands reached down to help. "I'm sorry," a calm male voice said. Clara looked up. Standing before her was a tall, handsome young man with neatly trimmed black hair, deep brown eyes, and an expression that mixed surprise with genuine concern. "It's my fault," he said again, picking up the last notebook and handing it to her. Clara smiled politely. "No, I wasn't looking where I was going either." For a brief second, neither of them spoke. Neither realized that this ordinary encounter would become the beginning of a story that would change both of their lives forever. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. The busy registration hall seemed to fade into the background as Clara accepted the notebook from the young man standing before her. "Thank you," she said with a warm smile. "You're welcome," he replied. "And... I'm really sorry for bumping into you." Clara shook her head lightly. "It was an accident. Don't worry about it." He smiled, relieved. "My name is Ethan Williams." "I'm Clara Johnson." "It's nice to meet you, Clara." "You too." Before Ethan could continue the conversation, a voice called from across the hall. "Clara! Over here!" Sophia waved excitedly from one of the registration desks. "They're calling students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences." "I have to go," Clara said apologetically. "Of course," Ethan replied. She smiled one last time before hurrying toward Sophia, disappearing into the growing crowd of students. Ethan remained standing where he was, watching until she was completely out of sight. A familiar hand landed on his shoulder. "You've been staring for almost a full minute." Ethan turned to see his best friend, Daniel Morgan, laughing. "So," Daniel teased, "who's the new girl?" Ethan smiled without realizing it. "Her name is Clara." "You already know her name?" "We just met." Daniel folded his arms. "And already you've memorized her name." Ethan chuckled. "I don't know why, Dan... but there's something different about her." Daniel looked toward the crowd. "You've met plenty of beautiful girls." "I know." "So what's different?" Ethan paused before answering. "She wasn't trying to impress anyone." "What do you mean?" "She was kind... genuine. She apologized even though the accident wasn't her fault." Daniel laughed. "My friend, I think you've been struck." Ethan rolled his eyes. "It's just admiration." "If you say so." The two friends left the hall together, but Ethan found himself glancing back one last time, hoping to catch another glimpse of Clara. --- Over the next two weeks, university life settled into a routine. Lectures began in earnest, assignments piled up, and students hurried from one class to another. Clara embraced every opportunity to learn. She spent long hours in the library, attended tutorials faithfully, and quickly earned a reputation among her lecturers as a hardworking and respectful student. Sophia often joked about her dedication. "Clara," she laughed one evening, "if books could vote, they'd probably elect you their president." Clara smiled. "I came here to become a doctor." "I know." "And I don't want anything distracting me." Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Anything?" Clara laughed. "Especially relationships." Sophia nodded knowingly but said nothing. --- Meanwhile, Ethan found himself thinking about Clara more often than he expected. Whenever he walked across campus, he hoped their paths would cross. One afternoon, his wish came true. He entered the university library searching for a reference book when he noticed Clara sitting quietly near the window. Sunlight streamed through the glass, illuminating the pages of her anatomy textbook. She looked completely absorbed in her reading. Ethan hesitated. "Should I go over?" he whispered to himself. Daniel noticed where he was looking. "You're thinking about talking to her, aren't you?" "Maybe." "Just be yourself." Taking a deep breath, Ethan walked toward her table. "Hello, Clara." She looked up and smiled warmly. "Ethan." "Mind if I sit down?" "Not at all." He pulled out the chair opposite her. "What are you studying?" "Human Anatomy." He glanced at the thick textbook and laughed. "That looks terrifying." "It is sometimes." "So why medicine?" Clara closed the book gently. "When I was little, my grandmother became very sick." "I'm sorry." "There weren't enough doctors in our community." She looked out the window for a moment. "I couldn't help her then... but maybe I can help someone else in the future." Ethan admired the determination in her voice. "That's an incredible reason." "What about you?" Clara asked. "Engineering." "Did you always want to become an engineer?" He smiled. "My father owns a construction company." "So you'll take over the business someday?" "Probably." They continued talking for almost an hour, discussing family, hobbies, favorite books, and university life. For Ethan, the conversation felt effortless. For Clara, he seemed respectful and easy to talk to. As they stood to leave, Ethan smiled. "I enjoyed this." "So did I." "Maybe we'll study together again sometime." "I'd like that—as friends." The last two words caught Ethan's attention. "As friends," he repeated. Clara nodded. "Friends." He smiled. "Friends." Although he agreed, something inside him quietly hoped for more. --- That evening, Daniel found Ethan sitting alone outside the engineering building. "You've got that smile again." Ethan laughed. "I spent an hour talking with Clara." "And?" "She's amazing." Daniel sat beside him. "Be careful." "About what?" "Don't build expectations too quickly." "I'm not." Daniel looked unconvinced. "You've known her for only a short time." "I know." "Then let things happen naturally." Ethan nodded. "I will." But even as he said the words, he knew his heart had already begun to race ahead of reason. --- A few days later, after a campus fellowship meeting, Ethan unexpectedly met Clara near the chapel. "I'm glad I ran into you," he said. "So am I," Clara replied with a smile. They walked slowly across the quiet campus as the evening breeze rustled the trees above them. Finally, Ethan stopped walking. "Clara..." "Yes?" "I've really enjoyed getting to know you." "I've enjoyed our conversations too." He took a deep breath. "I think I'm beginning to like you." Clara's smile faded into a thoughtful expression. She remained silent for a few seconds before speaking gently. "Ethan... you're kind, respectful, and thoughtful." His heart pounded. "But I came to this university with one goal." "Your studies." She nodded. "I don't want a romantic relationship right now." Ethan forced himself to smile despite the disappointment growing inside him. "I understand." "I hope we can still be friends." She extended her hand. "Friends?" Ethan looked at her hand for a moment before shaking it. "Friends." Clara smiled gratefully before continuing toward her hostel. Ethan stood there watching her disappear into the evening light. Daniel, who had seen everything from a distance, slowly walked over. "You okay?" Ethan nodded. "She said she isn't ready." Daniel placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Then respect her decision." Ethan looked toward the path Clara had taken. "I will." But deep inside his heart, another thought quietly formed. "She'll change her mind someday." He didn't realize it then, but that single belief would become the first seed of an obsession capable of changing all their lives. End of Chapter One
