Chapter 1 I Never Loved You
"What are you laughing at?" Lachlan Frost frowned. "Did the shock finally drive you crazy?"
I stared at his handsome face and felt my stomach churn. "I'm laughing because you're pathetic."
Because he had no idea what was coming. This wasn't an ordinary truth-telling show. It was a reality program that thrived on pushing people to their limits.
Every contestant had to bring a family member or partner. There were five questions in total. Each truthful answer earned two million dollars. Answer all five, and the prize reached ten million.
But once the game began, there was no backing out. Anyone who quit would forfeit every cent.
To get me here, Lachlan had lied and told me we were taking an early honeymoon before the wedding. Only after we landed did he finally admit he had signed up for the show.
I immediately looked it up and discovered that countless relationships had fallen apart after appearing on it.
Lachlan had wrapped an arm around me and reassured me there was nothing to worry about. He claimed he had never done anything that would hurt me.
That bastard had been lying from the very beginning. What he didn't know was that I had taken precautions of my own.
Lachlan tugged lazily at his collar. "Think whatever you want. The lie detector already proved I was telling the truth."
He smirked. "I'm only a few questions away from winning ten million dollars. Once I get the money, I can finally get rid of you."
The host glanced at the data on the monitor and excitedly raised his microphone. "The answer has been verified as truthful! Congratulations, Mr. Frost. You've just earned two million dollars!"
The audience erupted. On the giant screen behind us, comments flooded across the livestream at a dizzying speed.
A: [Has this guy completely lost his mind?]
B: [I feel terrible for the fiancée.]
C: [Honestly, he's horrible, but at least he's being honest. He might actually walk away with ten million.]
The host turned back to Lachlan. There was an almost predatory excitement in his eyes. "Mr. Frost, you've successfully cleared the first round. Are you ready for the second deadly question?"
"Absolutely." Lachlan lifted his chin smugly. "Bring it on."
The host cleared his throat. Then he raised his voice. "Question number two. What kind of person do you think your fiancée, Celine Ashford, is? And have you ever loved her, even a little?"
Lachlan laughed without hesitation. "That's easy. I've never loved her."
The words hit me like a slap.
"She's boring, she's no fun to be around, and honestly, she's nothing more than a walking ATM."
My entire body went rigid. My nails dug so deeply into my palms that they hurt.
"We've been together for seven years." My voice trembled. "I gave you my entire paycheck every month. I wouldn't even buy clothes for myself. And now you're telling the entire country that I'm nothing but an ATM?" My eyes burned.
Lachlan rolled his eyes dramatically. "Well, yeah. You were the one who chased me. You made the money, so naturally I spent it. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?"
He scoffed. "You only make a few thousand dollars a month anyway. That's not even enough to buy one of my watches. What exactly are you upset about?"
Then he shrugged. "If you weren't so obedient and convenient, I wouldn't have wasted seven years on you."
I laughed from pure anger. Even my voice shook. "I wasted your time? For seven years, you lived off me. I paid your bills. I paid your rent. I even paid your brother's college tuition."
I stared at him. "Lachlan Frost, you have no shame."
He looked at me as if I were the unreasonable one. "Why are you so obsessed with money? That's all you ever talk about."
He sneered. "The fact that I was willing to spend your money should've been a compliment. Do you know what I did with those cheap perfumes you bought me? I threw them straight into the trash. As for the spending money you gave me, I saved it up and bought Mara a Cartier watch."
The moment I heard Mara Sinclair's name, my mind went blank. A month ago, Lachlan had asked me for fifteen thousand dollars. He claimed he wanted to enroll in an elite business program.
I stared at him. "The fifteen thousand dollars I gave you last month... You used it to buy Mara that watch?"
Lachlan shrugged. "Yeah. So what?"
A smile spread across his face. "It looked perfect on her. Then there's you, still wearing the same cheap digital watch every day. To be honest, it's embarrassing being seen with you sometimes."
I took a shaky breath. My chest felt as though it were being ripped apart.
"That night I worked until two in the morning." My voice grew quieter. "I was in so much pain from my stomach that I broke out in a cold sweat. I called you for help. And while I was sitting there alone, you were shopping for a watch with her?"
Lachlan frowned impatiently. "What does your stomachache have to do with me? I'm not a doctor. What was I supposed to do?"
He leaned back casually. "Mara was upset that day. As her soulmate, of course I spent time cheering her up."
Boos erupted from the audience. Several young women stood up and openly flipped him off.
"That's disgusting! He's using his fiancée's money to support his mistress!"
"What a piece of trash!"
Lachlan wasn't embarrassed in the slightest. Instead, he raised his own middle finger at the crowd. "You people don't understand. In a relationship, the person who isn't loved is the real third wheel."
He smiled proudly. "Mara and I are the ones who truly love each other. Celine is nothing more than a stepping stone on our path to freedom and true love."
I bit down hard on my lip until I tasted blood. A memory flashed through my mind.
Then I looked at him coldly. "Last year, you complained about commuting on the subway. So I scraped together a down payment and bought you a car. Did Mara drive that too?"
Lachlan laughed. The contempt in his eyes was impossible to miss. "That beat-up Golf? I never wanted it. Mara needed a car for work, so I let her use it."
His grin widened. "You should've seen how much fun we had driving around in the car you bought." He looked straight at me. "You've been the fool in this relationship all along."
The host glanced at the rapidly climbing ratings and beamed. "Mr. Frost certainly has a unique view of love." He tapped the screen displaying the lie detector results. "The machine confirms that every word he just said reflects his genuine feelings."
The audience erupted again.
The host smiled. "In that case, since you're so deeply in love with your mistress..." He paused for dramatic effect. "Is she here today?"
Lachlan's eyes immediately lit up. A flush of excitement spread across his face. "Of course she is."
His smile was almost tender. "She's the most important person in my life. How could she possibly miss the moment I win ten million dollars?"
