CHAPTER1
Amelia's POV
The Smell of freshly brewed Coffee and Printed Paper had become one of my favorite Scents in the world.
Some People loved the Smell of expensive Perfumes.
Others loved flowers. But me? I loved books.
Maybe that was why I never regretted Choosing Publishing as a Career.
As I sat behind my desk on the twelfth floor of Hartwell Publishing, Staring at the Stack of Manuscripts Waiting for review, a Smile tugged at my lips.
Today had been a good day.
A very good day.
"Amelia!"
I looked up as my Supervisor, Margaret, Walked toward my desk.
The Woman was known for rarely Smiling, Which was Why the grin on her face instantly Made my Stomach flutter with nervous anticipation.
"Y-Yes?"
She Stopped beside my Chair.
"The board loved your Proposal."
My eyes Widened. "The new author Campaign?"
She nodded. "It was brilliant."
For a Moment, I Couldn't speak.
I Simply Stared.
Then I laughed Softly.
"Oh my God."
"You deserve it," she said. "You're one of the hardest-working editors in this Company."
Heat rushed to my Cheeks.
Compliments always embarrassed me.
"Thank you."
Margaret Squeezed my Shoulder.
"The Promotion discussions Start next Month."
“Promotion?”
My heart nearly Stopped.
"You didn't hear that from me," she added.
I grinned. "Alright, my lips are Sealed."
She Chuckled before Walking away.
The Moment she disappeared around the Corner, I buried my face in my hands.
I Couldn't believe it…
After three years of Working overtime,my Career was finally Moving forward.
And the best Part?
I Couldn't Wait to tell Ethan.
My boyfriend…. My best friend.
The Man I had loved for almost two years.
The thought of him instantly Warmed my Chest.
I reached for my Phone and Sent him a Message.
Me: Guess Who had an amazing day?
His reply Came almost immediately.
Ethan: My favorite editor?
I Smiled.
Me: Maybe.
Ethan: Dinner tonight. let's Celebrate.
Me: Your treat?
Ethan: Absolutely not.
I laughed.
Me: Then why are we Celebrating?
Ethan: Because I enjoy Watching you Pay for my food.
Me: You're impossible.
Ethan: See you at Seven, beautiful.
My heart Skipped because no Matter how Many times he Called me that, it always Made me blush.
I Stared at the Screen for a Moment before locking my Phone…
Life felt good, Simple and Stable.
At twenty-four years old, I had a Career I loved and a Man who loved me.
What more Could I ask for?
By Seven o'clock, I was Sitting across from Ethan in our favorite restaurant.
The Place Wasn't Particularly fancy.
But it Held Memories.
Our first date. Our first kiss. Our first anniversary.
So many Moments lived inside these Walls..
Ethan Smiled as he reached across the table.
God… He was so handsome.
He has a dark hair, Sharp jawline, and a Warm brown eyes.
He has the kind of Smile that Could melt almost anyone.
Including me…
"You look happy."
"I am happy."
He Squeezed my hand. "Tell me everything."
And I did.
I told him about Margaret. The Proposal. The Promotion Possibility…. Every single detail.
His face lit up with Pride.
"I knew it."
I laughed. "Knew What?"
"That you're a genius."
His answer Came so quickly that I burst out laughing again.
He leaned back in his Chair.
"I'm Serious."
The teasing expression disappeared from his face.
"You Work harder than anyone I know."
Something tender Settled in my Chest.
Ethan always knew how to Make me feel Seen, valued and appreciated.
"Thank you." I Said.
His gaze Softened.
"You deserve every good thing that's Coming your way."
I looked down, Suddenly emotional.
Maybe because life hadn't always been easy.
Maybe because I'd Spent years doubting Myself… Or maybe because hearing those Words from Someone you love Simply hits differently.
I looked back up and Ethan was already Watching me.
Like I Mattered… Like I was Special.
And in that Moment, I felt lucky.
Incredibly lucky
The Waiter arrived with our food, interrupting the Silence…
For the next hour we ate, laughed and talked about everything.
About Work, Movies, travel dreams, and future Plans.
The Conversation eventually drifted toward relationships.
One of Ethan's friends had recently gotten engaged.
"Daniel finally Proposed to his girlfriend."
I Smiled. "That's wonderful."
"He Was terrified."
I laughed. "Why?"
"He thought She'd say no."
"No Woman would Say no to Daniel."
We both laughed.
"Maybe that'll be me Someday too." Ethan said.
My Smile froze. "Who?"
"Me." He Shrugged.
"You’re Proposing soon?”
My heart Stumbled.
The restaurant Suddenly felt too Warm…
He grinned.
"Relax."
I narrowed my eyes.
"You're teasing me."
"Maybe."
I Pointed my fork at him. "You're terrible."
"I know."
His grin Widened.
"But if I ever Propose, you'll Say yes, right?"
The question Sounded Playful but there was Something genuine beneath it.
My heart Softened.
"Of Course I'd Say yes."
His expression Changed just for a Second.
It Was a flash of emotion and relief then it vanished and he Smiled again.
"Good."
The Conversation moved on, but the Moment lingered in my Mind.
Marriage..
A future together. Children maybe. A home and a family.
The dreams I'd Secretly Carried for years.
Dreams that felt Possible Whenever I looked at Ethan.
Because I loved him…. I truly did.
Which Was why Protecting my Promise mattered so Much.
The Promise I'd Made to myself years ago.
The Promise to remain a virgin until marriage.
Not because anyone forced me…
Not because I was naive.
Not because I judged other People.
It was Simply my Choice, my value and my belief.
Something deeply Personal and Ethan knew that.
He had always known… From the very beginning.
During the time we Started dating, I'd told him honestly.
I Still remembered that Conversation.
The fear. The vulnerability. The terror that he would leave.
Instead, he had Smiled and Said—
"I Care about you, Amelia. Not just Sex."
I had fallen even harder for him after that.
Because respect Mattered. Understanding Mattered.
And Ethan had given me both.
After dinner, we Walked through the City Streets together.
The evening air felt Cool against my skin.
Traffic lights glowed in the distance.
People laughed as they Passed us.
The City felt alive.
Ethan Slipped his hand into Mine.
I immediately intertwined our fingers.
A Simple gesture… Yet Somehow it always felt intimate, Comforting and Safe.
"You know," he said, "I still remember our first date."
I groaned. "Please don't."
"It was adorable."
"It was embarrassing."
"You Spilled Coffee on yourself."
I Covered my face. "Stop talking Ethan."
"You nearly Cried."
"Ethan!"
He laughed loudly.
The Sound made me Smile despite myself.
"You Were Cute."
I Peeked at him. "Cute?"
"The Cutest."
My Cheeks Warmed.
After all this time, he Could Still Make me blush…
We Continued Walking.
At Some Point, our Conversation faded.
Neither of us felt the need to fill the Silence.
Sometimes love looked like grand gestures… Sometimes it looked like Simply walking beside Someone and feeling at Peace.
Tonight felt like that…
We reached my apartment building and Ethan Stopped.
Neither of us Spoke immediately… Neither of us Seemed eager to Say goodbye.
Finally, he Cleared his throat.
"I have an idea." He Smiled.
That Smile again… The dangerous one.
The one that usually meant trouble.
"What kind of idea?"
"The fun kind."
I folded my arms.
"That doesn't answer the question."
He laughed. "I want you to Spend the Weekend with me."
I blinked.
"This Weekend?"
"Yeah."
His expression turned hopeful.
"I barely see you anymore."
"We Saw each other yesterday." I rolled my eyes.
His voice softened.
"I Want you to Sleep over at my apartment."
I Studied his face.
The Warmth in his eyes. The affection. The familiarity. Two years together. Two years of Memories. Two years of trust and my heart filled with happiness.
"Okay."
His eyes lit up instantly.
"Really?"
I nodded. "Really."
A grin Spread across his face.
The kind that Made him look boyishly handsome.
He Wrapped his arms around me before I Could react..
A Surprised laugh escaped my lips.
"Ethan! You're being dramatic."
"I know."
I Shook my head.
Ethan finally released me he leaned down and Pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead.
My eyes fluttered closed.
The gesture felt sweet, tender and loving.
For a moment I imagined what life would look like if Ethan and I spent forever together.
Would Ethan still kiss my forehead ten years from now?
I hoped So… More than anything.
"I'll Pick you up on Saturday morning," he Said.
"Okay."
"Don't Cancel."
"I won't."
He Smiled. "Good."
For Some reason, a Strange flutter Passed through my Chest.
A feeling I Couldn't explain.
Maybe I was nervous, Maybe I was overthinking or Maybe life was quietly Preparing to Change.
I Watched Ethan walk toward his Car.
He turned back once and Waved.
I Waved back.
Then he disappeared into the night.
I Stood there Smiling long after he left.
I Pulled out my Phone and opened our Chat.
Me: Looking forward to Saturday.
Three dots immediately appeared.
Then his reply arrived.
Ethan: Me too. More than you know.
A Smile Spread across my face.
I hugged my Phone against my Chest and headed toward my apartment building.
The elevator doors opened.
I Stepped inside.
The doors Slowly slid shut.
And as they Closed, my Phone vibrated again.
It was another Message from Ethan.
My Smile Widened as I reached for the Screen.
