Chapter 5

1666 Words
Logan hears Alex’s voice, is he dreaming? He opens his eyes and lies there still in his bed for a couple more moments trying to concentrate to figure out if he was dreaming. There it is again, he could hear her voice as clear as is he was standing next to her. His room is still quite dark and it feels to him that it’s still too early to be awake. “I will go and wake him now for you!” he hears Diane’s voice. Can she really be here? What is she doing here? A nock on his door startled him for a moment. “Um, yes?” “There is someone here to see you, please get dressed and come downstairs.” “Will be down in just a sec!” he replies with a chirp in his voice. For a young man it’s easy to get dressed in a hurry, but not this morning. The conflict between looking good and hasting to see her makes the task somewhat difficult for Logan. The last time he felt like this was when he was invited to go with Noah and Mary to a family picnic. But finally he got the formula right but standing in front of the mirror combing his short brown hair, the thought passes his mind only once. She is already been spoken for. Is this going to lead to the same tragic event like it did with Mary? Going downstairs, he finds Diane sitting across from Alex in the living room, each with a cup of coffee. “Do you think it’s wise for you to drink coffee?” Logan asks Alex, who is sipping away at it. Alex gives him a big sarcastic grin and nodding her head playfully. “I also made you some,” Diane says, pointing with her eyebrows in the direction of the cub standing on the corner of the coffee table. “I was just telling Diane you were helping me move some boxes today.” “Did you tell Mr. Hayes that you were not going to come into work today? I know he gave you off yesterday because of the accident but did you arrange with him for today?” Logan tilts his head and attempts to through some puppy eyes at Diane, “I was hoping you would ask him, you know he can’t say no if you ask him.” Diane looks at Logan, it’s hard to belief that this person standing in front of her is the same person as last night. Her eyes glide over Alex, this might be just the right thing for him. “Okay I will phone Alistair for you but don’t make this a habit, you have responsibilities.” She says while playfully flicking the tip of nose with the tip of her pointing finger. “Thanks Diane, you’re the best!” Logan shouts over his shoulders as they leave the house. Logan raises his eyebrows to the big red Chevy Truck parked in front of the house. “This yours?” She lifts one eyebrow, playfully hits him on his shoulder. “Don’t look so surprised!” Logan still finds it heart to belief that she can turn into the big wolf he saw the other night. She drives across town and Logan can't seem to take his eyes of her. She caught him a couple of times staring at her but then he quickly looked away. “So where are we going?” “Well you need to meet the alpha and the rest of the pack, so…” For some reason Logan’s heart starts racing and he can feel a cold sweat breaking out. Images of the black wolf standing in front of him growling at him plays through his mind. “Why did he want to attack me the other night?” “Nathan is a difficult person and his wolf persona is even more complicated, who knows why he does stuff but I know I don’t always agree with him. That is why I tried to protect you from him. When Jen informed us that you might be infected with the curse he was furious. The elders of the pack finally got him to calm down and convinced him to allow you to come into the pack to help you turn the first time. If it weren’t for them, then I don’t know what we would have done.” “So I take it into biting and turning people to werewolves is not a regular thing?” “Nope, it’s not allowed by the council of wolves. I needed to explain to our elders what happened. Luckily, they understood and agreed that I made the correct decision.” The truck takes a turn into a narrow dirt road. Tree branches scratch and make a scratching sound as they scrape the side of the truck as they pass through. It’s clear the road is not traveled regularly and Logan can now understand why she drives a truck. A normal car would never make it this far. They stop on an overhang, there is a couple of other vehicles parked there as well and some of them had not been moved in while as a thick layer of dust and dirt lay on them, one of them even had a pine tree starting to grow beside it lifting it a few inches from the ground. “We, walk from here!” “I wish I had known we were going for a hike, then I would I have worn other shoes.” Logan complained. “ Come on, don’t be like that!” The trail through bushes, trees and up the rocky mountain leads them to an opening. There is a couple of cabins build forming a keyhole form. The three cabins in the middle are the biggest. Two of them are two-story cabins and the one in the middle a three story cabin according to the rows of windows. There is quite a few people standing around, some of them with hacking back packs and others just hanging around. The delicious smell of eggs, bacon and barbequed meat tingles their noses. “Well, it seems we are still in time for breakfast!” she smiles and skips a couple of steps. “What is this place?” he asks her when he catches up to her. “Well, it’s a hiking resort.” She says with big eyes while making quotation marks in the air with her two hands. “It’s our front so no one would come snooping around. Once in a while, we have a group of hikers coming through just to make sure that everything seems legit.” Once inside the circle, Logan can see the size of the camp, there are far more than ten cabins flowing out from the ones that he initially saw. Alex starts to walk up to an elderly man. He is dressed like a lumberjack with a green beanie with his dark brown curly hair peeking from underneath it, he is wearing a red check shirt with its sleeves rolled up to his elbow. His jeans are all dirty and full of wood chucks. “Morning elder Mason!” “Morning Alexandra, and who is this?” Alex starts to blush and she immediately starts looking away from him. She doesn’t like it when people call her on her full name, but she does allow him to do it. Since she had arrived at their pack he had been like a dad to her. Sitting nights up with her when the tears just wouldn’t stop running down her face. He was the one that made her feel welcome and he was the one that stood up against Nathan. “Oh, sorry how rude of me, Mason this is Logan.” “Of course,” Mason gives Logan a friendly smile and stretches his hand out to greet him. His hand is quite big against Logan’s hand, and is rough and hard. “Please come with me, we need to introduce you to the other elders and then to,” Mason gives a loud and hard sigh before saying Nathan. He leads them to one of the two-story cabins on the left of the big one and asks them to wait for him outside while he goes inside to announce them. When he walked into the cabin a voice from inside the cabin made Logan frown. “Mason, you are still not dressed, it’s almost breakfast time and the new wolf will be here at any moment and you are outside chopping wood and doing chores like a omega. We have told you that if there is wood to be chopped, ask one of the omegas to do it for you. It will keep them and you out of trouble. Besides, it’s their duty to do grunt work, you are an elder now and you need to start behaving accordingly.” Mason stands with his beeny hat in both of his hands rolling it up. He seems nervous but then he replies, “They are actually already here.” Alex wants to start laughing but she keeps it in. When Logan looks at her she looks like a bubble that is ready to burst at any moment. It reminded her the way her parents treated her when she was late for something and he is a grown man, one of the biggest and tallest in the pack, but the other elders always treated him like a child. Maybe it was because he was much younger than the other two elders. “You see now, what kind of impression did you make on the young wolf? Show them in!” Mason's head pops out of the door and he is clearly laughing even though you can’t really see it hiding behind his bushy beard. “Okay you two, you can come in now.”
