Episode 1 — 2:17 A.M.
At 2:17 a.m., St. Raphael Medical Center was louder than usual.
The emergency department doors opened and closed almost continuously. Nurses hurried between beds, phones rang from different corners of the unit, and the overhead announcements seemed to come one after another.
Dr. Amara Adeyemi stood beside the nurses' station, trying not to look as exhausted as she felt.
It was her first week as a surgical resident.
She had imagined this moment countless times.
The white coat.
The operating room.
The responsibility.
She had not imagined the fear.
"Dr. Adeyemi!"
Amara turned.
A nurse was running toward her.
"Trauma incoming. Male, late thirties. Multiple injuries. Blood pressure dropping."
Amara immediately followed her.
The emergency doors swung open.
A paramedic pushed a stretcher into the room.
"Patient found unconscious after a vehicle collision," the paramedic reported. "No identification at the scene."
Amara stepped forward.
"Let's get him stabilized. Prepare for imaging."
Before anyone could answer, the atmosphere changed.
A tall man walked into the trauma bay.
Dr. Elias Kane.
Even among the surgeons at St. Raphael, his reputation was difficult to ignore.
Brilliant.
Uncompromising.
And notoriously difficult to impress.
He looked at the monitor, then at the patient.
"How long?"
"Seven minutes since arrival," Amara answered.
"Blood pressure?"
"Falling."
Elias moved closer.
"Get him to the operating room."
Amara nodded.
"Yes, Doctor."
Then Elias looked down at the patient's belongings.
A nurse had placed a wallet beside the stretcher.
Elias picked it up.
He opened it.
For the first time that night, his expression changed.
Amara noticed.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
He stared at the identification card.
Then he slowly looked back at the patient.
"What's his name?" Amara asked.
Elias's voice was quieter now.
"Jonathan Vale."
Amara frowned.
The name meant nothing to her.
But Elias looked as though he had just seen a ghost.
"Doctor?"
He handed the identification card to her.
Amara read it.
Jonathan Vale.
Thirty-nine years old.
She looked at Elias.
"Do you know him?"
"Unfortunately."
There was something strange in his voice.
"Then why did you stop the operation?"
Elias didn't answer immediately.
He looked toward the operating room doors.
Then back at Amara.
"Because this isn't just a trauma case."
Amara's heartbeat quickened.
"What is it?"
Elias stepped closer.
"Your father."
She froze.
"My father?"
Elias nodded.
"Marcus Adeyemi."
The name she had spent years trying to understand suddenly felt painfully close.
"What does he have to do with Jonathan Vale?"
Elias looked toward the unconscious patient.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Your father operated on this man eight years ago."
Amara stared at him.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
"My father died after that case."
"I know."
The room seemed to grow quieter around her.
Amara looked at Jonathan again.
For years, she had been told that her father's death was a tragic consequence of a complicated medical case.
A mistake.
An unfortunate outcome.
Something nobody could have predicted.
But Elias was looking at her as though he knew there was another story.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?" she asked.
"Because nobody wanted you asking questions."
Amara's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Elias didn't answer.
The heart monitor suddenly sounded faster.
A nurse looked up.
"Doctor, we're losing him."
Elias immediately turned toward the patient.
"Get the operating room ready."
Amara followed.
"Elias."
He stopped.
She had never called him by his first name before.
"What aren't you telling me?"
He looked at her for several seconds.
Then he said something that changed everything.
"Because if this man dies here, we may never know who killed your father."
Amara stared at him.
And for the first time in eight years, she wondered if her father's death had never been an accident at all.
The operating room doors opened.
And somewhere inside St. Raphael Medical Center, someone was already watching them.
