After Randy finished speaking, Adela and Melia exchanged a grateful look. They knew that staying out in the open would not only be unhelpful but could also put Randy in danger.
They retreated back into the relative safety of the cave. Adela nervously watched Randy from the cave entrance, while Melia silently prayed for his safety.
Outside, Randy gripped his loaded pistol, his eyes fixed on the wolf pack, not daring to look away.
The six gray wolves circled the larger white wolf, restless and seemingly awaiting orders. A single howl from the white wolf would send them charging. But the white wolf remained silent, its intelligent eyes scanning the barricade as if searching for a weakness.
The white wolf's intelligence surprised Randy. It was far more cunning than an ordinary wolf.
