THE EDGE The little cloud Sam had seen through Fortuna’s window came closer and closer until it covered the whole of Thistown and became the biggest cloud that they’d ever seen. It hovered low in the sky over the town, cutting out the last of the evening sun. Hundreds of people were hurrying down Avenue A to see the five traitors thrown from the Edge into the corn. Many of them were carrying flame torches against the dark. The drums were beating louder and faster as the five were dragged out of the Great Hall and into the yard. Once again they were thrown into the wooden cage on the cart, and once again the driver cracked his whip and drove the huge donkeys forward, this time back out through the gates of the Great Hall.
