My Haven

I took my seat, and a thrill shot through me. This night could only become more entertaining. I took a glance at him, and, surprisingly enough, he caught me. His lips twitched into an almost laugh, and it made my stomach flutter a bit. "Well, Ana," Mr. Sharpe said, breaking into my gaze across the table, "tell me about yourself." I was caught by surprise. "I just finished my second year at college, studying literature." Mr. Sharpe nodded with approval. "That sounds nice. What do you plan on doing with it?" Before I had a chance to answer, Carter cut in. "She'll probably write poetry or something," he said, voice mocking yet vaguely warm. I gave him a withering look. "Actually, I plan to teach." He laughed. "Ah, then you're going to mold young minds. Very noble." I couldn't read his tone, and I wasn't sure if he was teasing or was genuinely interested. In either case, my nerves had certainly cooled by this time. As the dinner progressed, I noticed Carter stealing glances at me whenever he thought I wasn't looking. I couldn't tell what to make of it, but a strange electricity hitched a ride in my chest. People were looking at me curiously now, and by the time dessert came around, I was sure of one thing—that this was going to be the beginning of an unexpected odyssey. My father and Mr Darion talked business and the weather and my Mum spoke fashion with Mrs Darion. I was lost in my own little world when I felt a pair of eyes on me. I looked up and my eyes met carter, still staring at me curiously like I was a creature that needed studying . When it started to look like the silence between us would last forever he broke it and asked if I was enjoying my meal, did I need something else?. I smiled and nodded No, the food was lovely and I didn’t need anything else, I finished it off with a “thank you” and took my gaze back to my food. I reached for the salt shaker the same time as my mum did abs it caused my glass of wine to upturn seeping into my clothes. I stood up hastily before the wine would stain the fur of the chairs. “f**k” I muttered in my head, now all pairs of eyes we’re looking at me. “I’m sorry” I apologized but Mrs Sharpe waved it away. “It’s nothing dear, look you dress is getting ruined. Carter dear would you excort her to the toilet to get her dress cleaned?”. I looked at him, half expecting him to say no but he got up and gestured for me to follow him. I walked behind him like a sheep led for s*******r. As we walked I heard the little bell been rung, calling the Servants to probably clean the mess I made. We got to the bathroom and he stood letting me pass. “I’ll be outside if you need anything”. He said gently. I looked around the bathroom and walked to the tap, everything was cream colored, even the frame of the mirrors. Rows of expensive looking hand lotion lined the cabinet. I quickly got a towel (also cream colored) and began to scrub my dress. I applied a little soap and the color slowly started returning to normal. In a few minutes I was done and I stepped out of the bathroom. He was still there, though his gaze was buried on his phone, I saw someone try to call him but he hung up almost immediately. I cleared my throat and he looked up at me, his eyes quickly scanned my dress and with a slight nod of the head we walked back to the dining together. Desert was brought in and we had just started eating when the butler that brought us in walked in. He cleared his throat gently and informed “Sir Carter” that he had a visitor waiting to see him. Carter looked surprised and said he wasn’t expecting anyone. He told the butler to send the person away, to tell them he was having dinner with his family and would not like to be interrupted. The butler smiled thinly. “I have tried sir, but she wouldn’t leave, she’s adamant to see you.” Carter looked up with a raised brow. “She?” He said. Excuse me everyone, I should see to this, I’ll be right back” he said simply and walked out of the dining door. I wondered who the “she” was and why she was so adamant on seeing him. I told myself it was none of my business and returned to my carrot cake. The dinner had been going fine. So far so good, she wasn’t what I expected. I had expected some dull looking girl who’d probably sweaters or stuff like that. But she was quite pretty, in a proper way, and she had this beautiful sea green eyes. And whenever she turned and light hit her eyes it looked a bit blue, it was fascinating really. The food was good and I had just begun to enjoy me evening when Ashley started with her calls, bombarding me with texts every minute. In some she spoke of her great love to me, in others she threatened to kill herself if I didn’t respond. I didn’t of course, because I knew she wouldn’t, she used this s**t on me during our first year of dating and I’d knew her tactics. She would never kill her self, not when all of her daddy’s money was hers. Now as I walked through the hallway I had the sinking feeling it was her. I felt anger rise within me. No other person would come this late to see me. I recognized her pink car from far and knew she was the one. She saw me and smiled and I felt sick.
