Chapter 14: The Mark of the Past

1130 Words
Celeste and Ethan didn’t stop running until they were far from the estate, their breath coming in sharp, panicked bursts. The documents clutched in Ethan’s hands felt heavier than their weight—these pages held proof of something neither of them had been prepared for. “We need to go somewhere safe,” Ethan said, scanning their surroundings. They had ended up in an empty park, the city lights flickering in the distance. “If they’ve been tracking us, they’ll know where we live.” Celeste swallowed hard. “Then where do we go?” Ethan exhaled, looking down at the ledger. “There’s an address here. It looks like… a meeting place. Some kind of gathering for people like us.” Celeste’s heart pounded. “You think there are more?” Ethan nodded. “There must be. And if they’re in this book, they might have answers.” The next evening, they found themselves standing before an old bookstore on the outskirts of town. Its windows were covered with thick curtains, and the sign above the door simply read: The Archive. Celeste hesitated before pushing the door open. The scent of aged paper and ink filled the air, the shop dimly lit by lanterns hanging from wooden beams. Rows upon rows of books stretched out before them, but the place was empty—eerily so. “Are we sure this is the right place?” Celeste whispered. Before Ethan could answer, a voice echoed from behind the counter. “You shouldn’t have come here.” They spun around to see an older man step out of the shadows. He was dressed in a long coat, his silver hair pulled back into a ponytail. His piercing blue eyes locked onto theirs. “You don’t understand what you’re involving yourselves in,” he continued. “There are forces that do not wish for these truths to be known.” Celeste took a step forward. “Who are you?” The man regarded her for a moment before speaking. “My name is Elias. And if you truly seek the truth… you must be prepared for what it will cost you.” Ethan lifted the ledger. “We found this at the estate. It tracks reincarnations. Names, dates. Us.” Elias’s expression darkened as he gestured for them to follow him deeper into the shop. He led them through a hidden door, down a narrow staircase into a candlelit room lined with more ancient books and artifacts. “This,” Elias said, motioning to the vast collection, “is what remains of history’s buried truths.” Celeste ran her fingers along the spines of the books. “Why are they hiding this?” Elias sighed. “Because knowledge is power. And the ones who control it fear what happens when people like you start remembering.” Ethan’s grip tightened on the ledger. “And who are they?” Elias hesitated before answering. “A society known as the Veil.” Celeste’s breath caught. “The Veil?” “They’ve existed for centuries, ensuring that no one disrupts the balance of time. To them, your bond is a threat. A fracture in the cycle they wish to control.” A shiver ran through Celeste. “Then why haven’t they stopped us yet?” Elias’s gaze turned somber. “Because you are close. And they are watching.” A knock suddenly echoed through the walls, sending a jolt of fear through Celeste’s spine. Elias’s eyes flashed with urgency. “We don’t have much time. If you want to survive this… you need to leave. Now.” Ethan grabbed Celeste’s hand, but she resisted. “No,” she said. “Not until you tell us what happens if we don’t stop.” Elias studied her for a long moment, then nodded. “If you keep going, you will uncover the full truth of who you are. But knowledge comes at a price. The Veil will not allow you to expose their control. They will come after you, and they do not take prisoners.” Ethan clenched his fists. “Then why haven’t they already? They could have stopped us at any time.” Elias sighed. “Because they want to see how much you remember on your own. If they erase your memories before you uncover the truth, the cycle repeats. But if you break free… the entire system collapses.” Celeste’s breath caught. “We’re not just fighting for ourselves.” Elias shook his head. “No. You are fighting for every soul they have ever controlled.” The weight of those words settled between them. Celeste’s mind spun with questions, but before she could speak, the knock at the door grew louder, more urgent. Elias moved quickly, pulling a heavy wooden bookshelf aside to reveal a hidden tunnel. “Go,” he urged. “Follow this path, and do not stop. There is a safe house on the other side of town. An ally will be waiting.” Celeste and Ethan exchanged a look before stepping inside. As Elias pushed the bookshelf back into place, plunging them into darkness, Celeste reached for Ethan’s hand, gripping it tightly. They were in deeper than they had ever imagined. And now, there was no turning back. The tunnel was cold and damp, the air thick with the scent of earth and stone. Their footsteps echoed as they moved cautiously forward, guided only by the faint glow of lanterns spaced along the walls. Celeste’s fingers tightened around Ethan’s hand. “Do you think we can trust him?” she whispered. Ethan exhaled, his voice steady but low. “I don’t know. But we don’t have a choice.” A distant sound made them stop. It was faint, almost imperceptible—like footsteps, but distorted. Celeste’s heart pounded. “Did you hear that?” Ethan nodded. He reached into his jacket, gripping the dagger he had taken from the estate. “Keep moving,” he murmured. “We can’t stay here.” They pressed on, their pace quickening. The tunnel twisted and turned, its path seemingly endless. The sense of being watched never faded, and Celeste felt a growing unease settle in her chest. Finally, a sliver of light appeared ahead—a wooden door, slightly ajar. Ethan pushed it open, and they stepped into a small, candlelit chamber lined with old maps and scrolls. In the center of the room stood a woman, her dark eyes wary yet knowing. “You made it,” she said, her voice calm but urgent. “We don’t have much time.” Celeste took a step forward. “Who are you?” The woman offered a small, knowing smile. “My name is Sienna. And I’ve been waiting for you.”
