Chapter 1 — Rejected Before the Moon
The moon was supposed to choose me tonight.
For twenty years, I had dreamed of this moment.
Twenty years of late nights staring at the sky, wondering if he felt the pull too. Twenty years of pretending my chest didn’t ache every time Lucian laughed and didn’t look at me.
Every wolf in the Silver Moon Pack knew the importance of the mating ceremony. It was the night when the Moon Goddess revealed the person destined to stand beside you for the rest of your life. No divorce. No second chances. Just fate.
And tonight, beneath the silver light of the full moon, I was supposed to find mine.
My fingers trembled as I touched the small necklace around my neck—the only thing my mother had left behind before she disappeared. It was silver, worn, and cold against my skin. Mom used to say it would glow when my mate was near.
It hadn’t glowed. Not once.
"Stop looking so nervous," my best friend whispered beside me. Her name is Mara, and she’d been with me through every humiliating training session where I failed to shift. "Lucian has been watching you all night."
I forced a smile. It felt wrong on my face.
Lucian Blackwood.
The future Alpha of our pack.
The boy I had loved since I was a child.
The boy who taught me how to throw a punch when the other kids called me "wolf-less."
For years, I had believed that the Moon Goddess had created our bond before we even knew what love was. Every stolen glance during training. Every time he walked me home after dark. Every moment he protected me when others called me broken.
All of it had to mean something, right?
Tonight would prove it.
At least, that was what I believed.
The elders stepped into the sacred circle first. Their white robes glowed under the moonlight. Behind them, drums started. Slow. Heavy. Like a heartbeat.
The entire pack gathered around the sacred circle, their eyes fixed on the unmated wolves waiting for their fate. I could smell them. Fear. Hope. Anticipation.
My own scent was sour.
One by one, names were called.
"Jonah Hale." A girl squealed and ran into his arms.
"Mira Collins." Her mate caught her and spun her.
One by one, wolves found their mates. Bonds snapped into place. The air got warmer.
My heart beat faster when the elder finally looked in my direction. His eyes were old and tired.
"Lyra Vale."
The crowd became silent.
Not the good kind of silent.
The kind where everyone leans in to watch a car crash.
I stepped forward. My legs felt like water.
Across from me stood Lucian.
He was wearing black. Of course he was. He always looked like he was ready for war. His jaw was tight. His hands were in fists.
The moment our eyes met, my wolf stirred inside me.
Except... I didn’t have a wolf. Not really. Just an empty space where one should be.
Still.
He's the one.
The thought filled me with warmth. Please let it be him. Please.
Lucian walked toward me slowly.
Each step echoed.
A smile touched my lips before I could stop it.
Then he stopped.
Too far away.
Three feet of space between us. A canyon.
Too cold.
Something inside me shifted. Dropped.
"Lucian?" I whispered. Only he could hear me.
His face was unreadable. Like stone.
The entire pack watched us. I could feel 200 pairs of eyes burning into my back.
Then he spoke. His voice was loud. Clear. Meant for everyone.
"Lyra Vale..."
A strange feeling settled in my chest. Like ice.
"I reject you as my mate."
The world stopped.
The drums stopped.
Even the wind stopped.
For a moment, I couldn't understand the words.
Reject.
Mate.
Me.
It didn’t fit together.
A few whispers spread through the crowd like fire.
"She never shifted..."
"I knew it..."
"Poor girl..."
My wolf cried out inside me. Except I didn’t have a wolf to cry. So it was just me. Hollow.
Pain exploded through my body, but I refused to fall. I locked my knees. I lifted my chin. If I was going to break, I wouldn’t do it here.
"Why?" My voice came out barely above a whisper. I hated how small it sounded.
Lucian looked away.
That hurt more than anything. Worse than the word "reject."
Because the boy who used to bandage my scraped knees couldn’t even look at me now.
"I cannot become Alpha with a mate who has no wolf."
Silence.
Then someone coughed.
Then someone else laughed. Quiet, but I heard it.
The words cut deeper than any blade.
Everyone knew.
I was the only wolf in the pack who had never shifted.
The only one who had never heard my wolf's voice.
The cursed girl.
The broken wolf.
The mistake.
More laughter. Soft, ugly.
I looked at Lucian, searching for the boy I had known all my life. The one who shared his lunch with me when I forgot mine.
But he was gone.
In his place was the future Alpha, and he had already made his choice.
Standing beside him was Selene, the daughter of a powerful Alpha family from the east.
Beautiful.
Strong.
She already had her wolf. A big silver one. Everyone had seen it.
Everything I wasn't.
"I choose Selene," Lucian announced. Louder this time.
The crowd erupted. Clapping. Cheers.
Selene smiled like she’d won a prize.
My vision blurred.
All those years of believing I mattered to him suddenly meant nothing. Twenty years, gone in one sentence.
I turned away before they could see my tears.
I refused to let them watch me break.
My feet moved before my brain did. Away from the circle. Away from the light. Into the shadows by the trees.
Then a voice stopped me.
Low. Rough. Like gravel.
"Interesting."
The entire pack went silent.
Not the silence of curiosity.
The silence of fear.
Everyone turned toward the entrance of the ceremony grounds.
A man stood beneath the shadows of the trees.
Tall. Taller than Lucian.
Powerful. His shoulders blocked the moon.
Dangerous. You could feel it in the air, like before a storm.
Even I knew who he was.
Kael Draven.
The Exiled Alpha.
The monster every pack warned their children about. "Don’t go to the north border or Kael will take you."
The Alpha who had been banished years ago for killing three elders and built his own territory beyond the northern borders.
Nobody knew why he had come.
Until he walked forward.
Each step was slow. Deliberate. Like he owned the ground he walked on.
His silver eyes locked onto me.
Not with pity.
Not with disgust.
With something far more dangerous.
Interest. Like I was a puzzle he wanted to solve.
The Alpha of our pack stepped forward, blocking him. "Kael Draven. You are not welcome here."
Kael ignored him. Completely.
His gaze never left mine.
"She was rejected in front of her entire pack," he said calmly. Too calm. "Humiliated because she is different."
His voice became colder. It rolled over the crowd.
"And yet she is still standing."
My heart raced. Thud. Thud. Thud.
Why was he looking at me like that? Like he saw something I didn’t?
Then he stopped in front of me.
I had to tilt my head up to meet his eyes. He smelled like pine and blood and something ancient.
The entire world seemed to hold its breath.
"Lyra Vale," he said.
My name sounded different coming from him.
Not broken. Not cursed.
Powerful.
Important.
"I don't care what they think you are."
His eyes darkened until they were almost black.
"I know exactly what you are."
A chill ran through me. From my scalp to my toes.
Before I could ask what he meant, Kael turned toward the pack.
"Your Alpha rejected her."
His voice echoed across the ceremony grounds. Everyone heard it.
"So I will make my claim."
Gasps filled the air.
The elders looked horrified. One of them actually dropped his staff.
Lucian stepped forward, finally angry. "You cannot do that. She’s pack. You have no right—"
Kael finally looked at him.
One look.
And Lucian stopped moving. His mouth closed.
"She was yours," Kael said coldly.
"Now she is mine."
My breath caught.
I should have been afraid.
I was afraid.
But something about him made my wolf—my silent, missing wolf—feel awake for the first time in my life. Like a ember glowing in the dark.
Kael held out his hand.
Big. Scarred. Steady.
"Come with me, Lyra."
I stared at him.
The man everyone called a monster.
The man who had just claimed me in front of everyone.
If I went with him, I’d be exiled too. An outcast.
I should have refused.
I should have stayed.
But behind me was a pack that had watched me break and laughed.
And in front of me was the only person who looked at me like I wasn't worthless.
I slowly reached for his hand. My fingers shook.
The moment our fingers touched—
Fire.
A burning mark appeared on my wrist. Black at first, then glowing silver. A crescent moon wrapped in claws.
It hurt. And it didn’t.
Kael's eyes widened.
For the first time...
The feared Exiled Alpha looked shocked.
His grip tightened on mine, like he was surprised too.
And somewhere deep inside me, in that empty quiet place, something ancient whispered:
"Finally."
The rejected girl has awakened something even the Alpha doesn't understand.
