Chapter 13When I finally get home, I find Melanie’s gear bag on the floor of my room and I start crying all over again. I send a quick email to Merri and to HR, calling out for the day. Then I lie down next to the bag, spooning it like it might be her. But it smells enough like Melanie that I am comforted by it, and I fall asleep hard and still. I wake after eleven, aching all over from the awkward way that I slept. I sit up, rolling my neck clockwise and then counter-clockwise, my muscles stiff from the cold hardwood, my bones popping as I move. I look at my phone; nothing except an email back from Merri telling me that she hopes I feel better.
