*Never Meant to Be Luna*
Chapter 1 *Never Meant to Be Luna* Aurora's POV: Mason Caine broke me and my wolf. And now, everything I am breathing for is revenge. Six months ago, I was softer. Quieter. I still believed that if I gave enough of myself to someone, they would not throw me away like something disposable. As an omega in the Stardust Pack, dreaming was a dangerous thing. We were raised to obey, to lower our eyes, and to accept whatever scraps were thrown our way. Omegas did not become Lunas. Never. Yet somehow, I had dared. I had loved Mason Caine for four years. Loved him in secret corners when no one was watching. I had loved him when it was foolish, dangerous, and should have been impossible. My foster sister, Katherine Lockwood, had been groomed for power since birth. Beta blood, political connections, a family that held alliances across borders. I always knew that. I just never thought Mason would be the throne she was after. A week after my twentieth birthday, my world tilted. I had missed finding my mate at eighteen, and Mason had said he could not feel the bond back then. So this was my last chance. --- The mating ceremony was sacred. The air was filled with incense and moonflowers. Silver ribbons hung from the beams of the pack hall, catching the light as wolves filled the space. I stood among them, my hands cold, my heart beating so fast it hurt. I glanced around for Mason and did not find him. Tonight, the Moon Goddess would reveal fated mates. I had dressed carefully, choosing a soft blue gown that hugged my waist and fell modestly to my ankles. Omegas were not expected to shine. Still, I wanted to look beautiful for my mate. Mason had kissed my forehead earlier and said I looked beautiful. He told me to wait for him. He told me tonight would change everything. I believed him. When the call came, the bond snapped awake inside me like a spark. I nearly cried from relief. The pull was strong, guiding me forward. "Mate." My wolf whispered, stirring softly inside me. Then she exploded. She surged through my chest with a force I had never felt before, joy and hunger and certainty crashing through me all at once. My knees buckled. My heart pounded so hard I thought it might burst through my ribs. The scent hit me next. Pine and ash, something sweet beneath it. Night air. And something unmistakably Mason. I smiled. My hands trembled as I followed the pull, slipping out of the hall and into the corridor. My heart fluttered, light and hopeful. I imagined his face when he saw me. The pride in his eyes when he took my hand in front of everyone and called me his Luna. For the first time in my life, I felt truly chosen. The door to his room was ajar. I slowed. Voices drifted through the crack. A woman's moan, loud and breathless. Then Mason's voice, low and intimate, a sound I had only ever heard when we were alone. I stepped closer, my chest tightening. The scent hit me again, stronger now. Not just Mason. The other wolf who was in there. Familiar in a way that made my stomach turn. I pushed the door open slowly. I wished I had knocked. The first thing I saw was bare skin. Mason's. And a woman's. Time did not stop. It shattered. Mason stood near the bed, his hands on her waist, his mouth pressed to her neck. Her head was tilted back, her fingers tangled in his hair as they moved together. The bond inside me screamed. My hands dropped to my sides, suddenly lifeless. Hot streams of tears rushed down my face before I even realized I was crying. "Mas—" The sound barely left my throat. They both turned. Mason froze. So did the woman. Her face finished what the betrayal started. Katherine. I remained frozen in the doorway, my fingers still curled around the doorframe. My body went cold, like someone had dumped ice down my spine. I could not breathe, nor blink. My wolf slammed against my chest in confusion, the joy I had felt moments ago twisting into something sharp and frantic, desperate and confused. Mason lifted his head. Our eyes met. No panic. No guilt. No shock. Just emptiness. The look of a man who had already decided I did not matter. Katherine grabbed a robe and wrapped it around herself, her lips curling slightly. "I thought you knew," she said softly. "It was always meant to be this way." *Always...?* My wolf stuttered. My knees gave way. I staggered back, the room spinning. Every emotion hit me at once. Love. Rage. Humiliation. Disbelief. My heart felt like it was being crushed in a fist that kept tightening. I turned and ran out. I barely made it down the hall before my lungs started burning. I did not know where I was going. I just needed distance. Air. Space. Anything but that image. Footsteps thundered behind me. "Aurora, wait!" His voice cracked something deeper inside my chest. I ran faster. I could not help but laugh at myself. After all those prayers, and when the Moon Goddess finally answered me, this was her answer. The night air slapped against my face as I burst outside, my bare feet hitting gravel, roots, dirt. My chest heaved. Tears blurred my vision. My wolf whimpered, confused and hurt, pulling toward him even as my heart screamed to get away. He caught me near the treeline, his fingers closing around my wrist. I spun on him, ripping my arm free. "How could you?!" I shouted, my voice breaking as it tore out of me. "How could you do that to me?" His face hardened, the softness I had loved for years, gone. "It is not what you think," he said too quickly. A bitter laugh ripped from my throat. "I saw her in your bed, Mason." He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair like I was the inconvenience here. "Listen to me. You are overreacting." That word shattered something fragile inside me. *Overreacting.* It was not the word I was expecting. I wished he would say something else. Defend himself. Blame Katherine for seducing him. Anything. But he stuck with it. I took a step back, my hands shaking. "You slept with my sister." "She is not your real sister, Aurora," he snapped, irritation flashing across his face. That hurt worse than the betrayal. "She is still my sister!" I shot back. "We grew up together. You knew that." His jaw tightened. "This is bigger than you. Bigger than us. This is politics, Aurora. The Lockwoods are kingmakers. They control alliances across the borders. Resources. Votes. Power." I stared at him, my heart pounding so loudly it drowned out the forest sounds. "So you slept with her for power?" "I am marrying her," he corrected. "To strengthen the pack." My vision tunneled. *Marrying.* *Her.* Everything inside me screamed. "What about me?" I demanded. "What about our bond? Did you forget your promises?" He hesitated, just for a second, and then he said the words that finished breaking me. "I will come back for you. After. Only if you wait." I laughed, the sound cracked and hysterical. "Wait for what? For you to make her Luna and keep me hidden like dirt?" "You are an omega, Aurora," he said flatly. "You were never meant to be Luna." The truth sliced deep. "I won't wait," I said, my voice shaking but loud. "I won't be your second choice." Something dark flashed in his eyes. "Fine. If you cannot accept that, then I set you free." The words barely registered before he continued, his voice rising, formal and cruel. "I, Mason Caine of the Stardust Pack, reject you, Aurora Vale, as my mate." Pain exploded through me. Agony ripped through my chest like claws tearing flesh apart. I screamed as my body convulsed, collapsing to my knees. My wolf howled inside me, her pain echoing mine, sharp and desperate. The bond snapped. I felt it tear away from me, ripping something essential out of my soul. "No," I sobbed, clutching my chest. "No, please don't. Take it back." Tears streamed down my face as I looked up at him, begging without pride left to save me. "You marked me. You marked me when I was seventeen. You said you loved me." His expression softened. Just for a moment. "I am sorry, Aurora," he said quietly, stepping back. That was it. No fight. No regret. No turning back. Something inside me went silent. My wolf whimpered once. Then nothing. The absence was worse than the pain. I stood on shaking legs, my heart hollow and screaming, and met his eyes. "I will make you pay, Mason," I whispered. "Even if it kills me." His stare hardened. "Then you are better off as a rogue. Take what you can and leave before dawn." He turned his back on me and walked away. And that was the night I learned what monsters look like.
