The phone rang at 6:47 a.m. and Maya already knew it was bad. She snatched it off the nightstand. “What happened?” Lila’s voice cracked on the other end. “They’re filing on Friday. Twelve thousand four hundred. I don’t have it, Maya. I don’t have anything.” Maya sat up fast. The number hit her like a punch. She had counted her own balance three times last night. It wasn’t enough. Not even close.“I’ll fix it,” she said. “You always say that.” “I mean it.” Lila hung up. Maya stared at the dark screen, heart slamming. Twelve thousand four hundred dollars. She opened it. Three months. Full residency at his coastal house. Complete confidentiality. Pay that made her vision blur. Enough to cover Lila twice and still leave her breathing.Maya’s pulse kicked hard. She typed back for the full contract before she could talk herself out of it. Forty minutes later it landed. She scrolled fast. Standard clauses. Payment schedule. Termination rights. Then the section titled Private Working Conditions. Her eyes locked on one paragraph. The Collaborator will reside at the property for the full term. She will make herself available for direct consultation and scene development as required. The nature of the manuscript may require demonstration of certain narrative elements for accuracy. Demonstration. The word sat there like a live wire. Maya highlighted it. Un-highlighted it. Read it again. In any other contract she would have called the whole thing off. In this one, with Lila’s deadline screaming in her head, she kept reading. By noon she had questions. By two she sent them. By four the answers came back—polite, careful, and still vague as hell on the word that mattered. At 5:12 p.m. she signed. The confirmation hit her inbox one minute later. A car will collect you at 9:00 a.m. the day after tomorrow. Bring only what you need. Maya exhaled hard, like she had been holding her breath for hours. She packed fast. Two suitcases. No photograph of Lila this time. Some things didn’t belong where she was going. She texted her sister. It’s handled. Don’t ask how. Lila sent back a flood of thank-you messages Maya didn’t answer. Night settled. Sleep didn’t. At 3:17 a.m. her phone lit up again. New email. From: E. Voss Subject: Clarification One line only. The demonstrations are not optional. Pack accordingly. Maya stared at the screen until it went black. Her throat tightened. The contract was signed. The money was already moving. And the man who never spoke in public had just reached out in the middle of the night to make sure she understood exactly what she had agreed to. She set the phone down, hands unsteady. Two days. Then she would be inside his house, under his terms, with no clean way out. Maya lay back and stared at the ceiling, heart still racing. Somewhere in the dark, the refrigerator hummed like a warning.
