Garlands of green foliage trimmed with white streamers decorated the banquet room for the joyful and noisy affair of Winter Solstice breakfast. From her place behind the cirayla, Irenya watched children play tag games between the green-draped tables, occasionally knocking over the juice cups. A group of small children played some kind of game under the royal table. The small face of Alara peeked out from the folds of cloth. Irenya caught sight of Brianne watching the children, the girl’s sideways glance betraying a pretended indifference. According to Olwin, the friendship between Brianne and Alara had diminished somewhat.
