Chapter 1—Gilded Beginnings
The scent of polished marble and fresh-cut lilies hit Maya Brooks the moment she stepped through the revolving doors of LuxeGems International. Her heels clicked against the pristine floors as she walked , eyes wide, taking in the dazzling lobby. A towering crystal chandelier shimmered overhead, refracting light across the opulent cream and gold space. This was no ordinary company—it was the pinnacle of prestige in the luxury jewelry world. And she was about to be a part of it. Her heart beat erratically beneath her blouse as she adjusted her ID badge. Breathe, Maya, she reminded herself. This was the moment she had dreamed of. Years of late-night studying, two part-time jobs, and endless scholarship applications had led her to this point. “Maya Brooks?” a poised voice interrupted her reverie. Maya turned to see a woman in a tailored grey suit and sleek heels. Her auburn hair was pulled into a severe bun, and she held a digital tablet against her chest. “Yes,” Maya said quickly, extending a hand. “Reina Clarkson. HR manager. Follow me. The interns are gathering upstairs.” As they ascended in a glass elevator, the city stretched below in a blur of movement. Reina didn’t smile. She didn’t speak. And Maya got the distinct impression that even breathing too loud would be frowned upon. They emerged into a wide corridor lined with glass-walled offices, each one a vision of minimalism and precision. She caught sight of a striking brunette intern fixing her lip gloss in the reflection of a display case. Another guy in expensive-looking loafers checked his watch impatiently. Maya adjusted her modest pencil skirt and blouse again, reminding herself she earned her place here. Reina stopped at a conference room. “Orientation begins in ten. Be early,” she said crisply and turned away. Maya stepped in to find designed black chairs, a massive oval table, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a view of the Thames. She chose a seat far from the door, trying to stay inconspicuous. But her mind drifted, tugging her into memory. Flashback: Three Years Ago “Maya, your name’s on the acceptance list!” her elder Donald brother had screamed, running through the front door, flapping a printout like a flag. She’d frozen at the kitchen counter, dish soap on her hands. “What?” He shoved the letter into her hands. “Architecture,Cornell University. You did it!” She has gained admission into one of the top 3 universities to study architecture, she couldn’t help but cry. Their mother burst into tears. Their father, silent as always, walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder. That single gesture carried the weight of his pride. They had nothing but faith and hard work. And she promised herself then she would never waste that investment. Back in the present, Maya blinked as the door clicked open again. More interns filtered in, and murmurs filled the room. Her nerves returned with a vengeance. She didn’t belong here—not with these polished children of millionaires. Then the room became still. A silence fell like a wave. Heads turned. Maya’s pulse quickened. Julian Vance had entered the room. He was taller than any man had the right to be, dressed in a charcoal suit that molded to his broad shoulders. His piercing blue eyes scanned the room with detached intensity. Not a smile. Not a word. Maya’s breath caught. He didn’t belong in this century—he looked like he’d walked out of a Renaissance painting, all cold majesty and sculpted disdain. He was intimidating, magnetic… dangerous. Reina followed behind him, clearing her throat. “This is Julian Vance, CEO of LuxeGems International,” she said. Julian folded his hands behind his back. “You’ve all worked hard to be here. Make it worth it. This company doesn’t tolerate mediocrity. Or distractions.” His eyes landed directly on Maya. Her spine stiffened. He turned without another word and walked out. Whispers erupted as soon as the door closed. Some girls sighed. One guy cursed under his breath. Maya didn’t speak. She felt branded by his stare. Later that Afternoon – Break Room She had just gotten a coffee when the door to the executive hallway opened. She turned, and there he was again. Julian. Their eyes met. Her cup trembled in her hands. He stepped closer—not enough to invade, but enough to unsettle. “Miss Brooks, is it?” She nodded slowly. “Yes, sir.” “I suggest you stop staring at people during meetings.” Maya blinked. “I wasn’t—” He cut her off. “There’s a reason this place shines, Miss Brooks. Discipline, not distraction. Remember that and stay focused “. With that, he walked away, the scent of cedar and something darker lingering behind him. She stood frozen, heart thudding. What the hell was that? That Night – Maya’s Apartment Victoria’s voice buzzed over speakerphone. “Wait—he spoke to you?” Maya paced. “More like... scolded. He thinks I was staring. He was staring at me!” “Classic male CEO behavior. He’s probably testing you.” Maya flopped on her bed. “He was cold. Dismissive. But there was… something.” “Well, babe,” Victoria said, “you might just be the first thing that billionaire iceberg feels in a long time.” Maya groaned. “Don’t start.” “I’m just saying... don’t underestimate what you bring to that place. Be brilliant. Be bold. And maybe—just maybe—be a little dangerous.” *** LuxeGems Headquarters, Midnight*** Julian sat alone in his penthouse office, staring at Maya’s internship profile on his tablet. He clicked on her photo. Zoomed in slightly. A ghost of a smile tugged at his lips. Then vanished. “She's going to be trouble,” he murmured to himself, voice like frost. His phone buzzed. A message from an Unknown number: “She’s in. Now let the games begin.” Julian’s jaw tightened.
