Cadmael and Diana finished reading the book and we went to eat together. This was the perfect opportunity to have the both of them bonding around the book and to follow the plot at the same time.
"What did you think about the book Cadmael? I asked genuinely curious."
I knew that he liked it according to the original writing but hearing it from his mouth was different.
"I really liked the protagonist."
Diana didn't say anything sipping her tea.
"Why?
-They are really kind and always want to help others. I don't like it when they get in danger because of that but they are really endearing."
I was really happy to hear that. The protagonist was exactly like Diana and I felt like Cadmael finally started liking her. I was so satisfied with my plan that I could jump all over the place.
"I like her too! She is an amazing person and I have a lot of respect for her."
I smiled at Diana who returned my smile with a soft expression on her face. I wanted to say how much the protagonist resembled her but I was scared that Camdael would understand that I knew he liked her and get all shy. I should let them figure it out for themselves. Cadmael was really attentive and there was no doubt that Diana would fall for him too.
Talking about Diana, she put her cup down in silence before saying:
"I think there should be more people like the protagonist. If there were, then the world would be a better place."
Cadmael had a strange smirk:
"What makes them so appealing is the fact that they are different from other people. Would you still like them if they were the same as everybody else?
-Do you mean that they wouldn't be endearing if they weren't nicer than the others? What superficial feelings."
Cadmael's smile grew bigger. I was really happy to see them talk so much! I knew that everything would get back on track!
"You seem to think that they have only one quality which is their kindness. I know that they would be different from the others no matter the society. So who's the one with superficial feelings now?"
Diana's eyes started glowing. She seemed really into the conversation. There was nothing better than a debate to get closer. If they didn't agree on the book then they would talk a lot about it and get to know eachother better. Perfect!
After the meal, Cadmael and I walked home together. I was quite satisfied but still had an idea on how to make things more like in the original writing:
"You know what would be nice?"
Cadmael was all ears.
"If you wrote your thoughts as you were reading.
-Would you like that?"
I nodded. Diana would love it.
"I'm sorry. I was really into the story and wanted to finish it as soon as possible to talk with you about it. I remember everything that I thought. Do you want me to tell you?"
I laughed seeing his enthusiasm.
"No need. You'll tell us next time we are having a meal together.
-Did you read the other book I got you?
-I couldn't start it yet. I'll read it tonight.
-Could I come with you?
-Of course. But wouldn't you be bored looking at me read?
-Never."
I frowned. Who wouldn't be bored looking at someone for hours?
"What about I recommend you a book?"
Cadmael seemed really touched and even started blushing.
"Would you?
-Of course! I would love to know what you think about my favorite stories."
It was what struck me the most in this book to begin with. I loved a husband who was interested in the hobbies of his wife.
Once in the library I looked around thinking about what to recommend Cadmael. I had too many ideas and didn't know where to start. Seeing me hesitating, Cadmael took a book from the shelf:
"You read this one four times. Would I like it?"
I frowned:
"How did you know how many times I read it?"
Cadmael smiled:
"I told you I wouldn't get bored looking at you."
I still wasn't convinced but stopped prying.
"I don't know if you'd like it. It is way stranger than the one you just read. I was looking for something more similar."
To be honest I was looking for something Diana liked but the book Cadmael was holding was one of my favorites. Diana didn't finish it and wasn't a big fan which I respected. If Cadmael read it he wouldn't have anything to talk about with Diana. On the other hand, it was important for him to have his own taste in books. He shouldn't copy the tastes of others. He was new to reading so maybe he needed to try a lot of different styles to have an idea of what he liked.
"It is quite dark and surprising.
-Do you like it?
-It is one of my favorites.
-Then I'd like to read it."
I nodded and we sat down to read. I soon got up from the sofa and sat on the ground directly.
"Isn't it cold?
-I like sitting on the ground."
Cadmael suddenly got up and handed me a cushion:
"Sit on this at least."
Cadmael put the cushion down in front of me and I sat on it while reading. Sometimes I heard Cadmael write something and noticed that he was indeed taking notes on his impressions. This made me smile and feeling my gaze, Cadmael looked at me:
"Aren't you writing your impressions?"
I frowned.
"Me?
-I would love to read your thoughts."
I was surprised for a second. Did Cadmael ask Diana to write her thoughts? He didn't. While we were at it, no one ever asked me to write my thoughts and let alone read them. I felt that strange feeling in my heart again and got suddenly really excited. I took out a pen and even wrote the thoughts I had a few minutes ago. I didn't know it would be this nice to have a friend.
We read for hours and seeing how into it I was, Cadmael went to get us something to eat while I continued reading. He put the plate next to me and sat down on the ground close to me.
"Do you want me to feed you?"
I immediately raised my head.
"No!"
Cadmael laughed.
"Are you sure? You could continue reading if I did."
His proposition was really tempting. And I really wanted to know what would happen in the book. I almost said yes but then remembered that he was the future emperor of this world. I shook my head hastily:
"I'll eat myself."
Cadmael laughed:
"As you wish."
After eating we continued reading. I was especially energized now that I had a friend to read with and wanted to finish the book today but started to feel my eyes getting heavy. Cadmael saw me rub my eyes and closed his book:
"We should go to bed.
-I have only one chapter left!
-How many pages is it?
-Twenty..."
Cadmael laughed and kneeled in front of me:
"You'll read them tomorrow. It's very late.
-But I really want to know the end! They are almost on the island!"
Cadmael couldn't help laughing. I knew that I acted like a kid but I really couldn't put the book down. Seeing me so drowsy, Cadmael took the book from my hands:
"Hey!
-You can't even keep your eyes open. I'll read it to you, close them."
I hesitated but Cadmael seemed determined. He was way too strong for me to take the book back and I finally agreed. Cadmael took me to the couch and laid me down before sitting on the ground in front of my face. I told him to get on the couch but he shook his head:
"It wouldn't be comfortable for you."
He started reading and I closed my eyes listening to the end of the story. Cadmael's voice was really nice to listen to and I had to fight myself to stay awake. I was almost asleep when a stressful passage arrived in the book and I told Cadmael to stop reading.
"What's wrong?
-I need a second to prepare."
Cadmael laughed.
"Are you anxious?
-Of course I am! I hope they'll be happy and find their friends... I am so scared that it will have a sad ending."
Cadmael continued but I stopped him again. I was wide awake now and couldn't take the mystery. I stood up and started walking up and down while Cadmael still looking at me with a smirk:
"You can hold my hand if you want to."
I blushed.
"No need."
I continued walking and told Cadmael to continue. Fortunately, the book had a happy ending and I could relax. All the stress disappeared and I felt sleepy again. Cadmael closed the book and walked me to my room:
"I'm so sorry. You know the ending now. You won't want to read it.
-I'll read it.
-Are you not bothered by spoilers?
-I want to see your notes."
