Chapter 28 May 2, eleven months later “But what am I to do with the doves, sir?” the handmaid asked for what Emmett was sure to be the nine-thousandth time. “Antoinette, lovely girl,” Emmett said, holding his forehead and desperately willing himself not to shatter into an explosive rage, “I do not care if you take the doves and drown them one by one.” The girl looked up sharply and Emmett smiled back blankly. “The doves were your fair lady’s idea. Perhaps she may have some ideas and directions for you on how best to contain and care for them until the ceremony.” He wasn’t trying to be an ass, Emmett kept telling himself. Antoinette was only doing her duty in the same fashion that he was trying to accomplish his. Nor was he specifically targeting the new princess or her ideas. Marianna
