Chapter 1: The Anniversary Betrayal
The diamond ring slipped from Elena Hart's trembling fingers and struck the polished marble floor with a sharp, metallic clang. The sound echoed through the grand ballroom, silencing hundreds of conversations in an instant. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while members of the city's wealthiest families turned toward her with curious eyes. The elegant music continued to play, but to Elena, everything around her faded into a blur. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration. Five years of marriage. Five years of loving Adrian Blackwood with every piece of her heart. She had spent the entire day preparing for this anniversary banquet. She personally chose Adrian's tie, supervised every detail of the decorations, and even baked his favorite chocolate cake despite knowing the hotel's chefs could have done a better job. She believed this evening would remind him of the promises they had made when they were young and struggling together. Instead... She watched her husband stand on the stage with another woman in his arms. Adrian Blackwood looked as handsome as ever in his perfectly tailored black suit. His expression remained calm and unreadable as he took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen," he said, his deep voice carrying across the ballroom, "thank you for joining us tonight." The guests applauded politely. Elena forced a smile. Maybe this was a surprise. Maybe he had planned something romantic after all. Then Adrian reached for the hand of the woman standing beside him. She was breathtakingly beautiful, dressed in a shimmering silver gown that caught the light with every movement. "This," Adrian continued, "is Chloe Morgan." Chloe smiled confidently as cameras flashed around her. "The woman I truly love." The words struck Elena harder than any slap. For a heartbeat, she couldn't breathe. Around the ballroom, whispers spread like wildfire. "Isn't Elena his wife?" "What is going on?" "I heard Chloe and Adrian dated years ago." "So Elena was only a replacement?" Elena stared at Adrian, desperately searching his face for any sign that this was a cruel joke. There was none. Instead, Chloe slipped her arm through his and rested her head against his shoulder. "I'm sorry," Chloe said softly, her voice sweet enough to fool anyone who didn't know better. "Love always finds its way home." Mrs. Blackwood walked toward Elena with a satisfied smile. "I've waited long enough for this day." She removed a folder from her designer handbag and dropped it onto the table in front of Elena. "Sign the divorce papers." The thick stack of documents lay open before her. Every page had already been prepared. Every signature line waited for only one name. Elena looked at Adrian. "You planned this?" His silence answered her. Her fingers trembled. "For five years," she whispered, "I stood beside you when your company was drowning in debt." "I worked through the nights." "I negotiated contracts." "I believed in you when no one else did." She took a shaky breath. "Did those years mean nothing?" Adrian finally met her eyes. "They're over." Only two words. Cold. Merciless. Without even a trace of guilt. The guests watched eagerly, enjoying the drama unfolding before them. Someone even raised a phone to record the moment. Mrs. Blackwood crossed her arms. "Don't make a scene. You should be grateful you were allowed to live as a Blackwood for this long." A few guests chuckled. Others shook their heads in pity. Elena suddenly realized something. Not a single person in this room was on her side. Not one. She slowly picked up the pen. Her vision blurred with tears, but she refused to let them fall. If this marriage had become a performance... Then this would be her final act. With steady hands, she signed her name. Elena Hart. The ink dried almost instantly. Five years of marriage ended with a single signature. Without another word, she removed her wedding ring. The diamond sparkled beneath the lights one last time before she placed it beside the divorce papers. "I've returned everything that belongs to the Blackwood family," she said quietly. Her voice was calm. Too calm. "I hope none of you ever experience the kind of loyalty you just threw away." She turned toward the exit. Behind her, applause suddenly erupted. The celebration had resumed. Only now... It was celebrating her downfall. As Elena reached the ballroom doors, Adrian spoke. "Elena." She stopped. Hope flickered inside her chest despite everything. Slowly, she turned around. His expression never changed. "Leave your company access card." The tiny spark of hope disappeared. Without saying another word, Elena reached into her purse, placed the black access card on a nearby table, and walked out into the pouring rain. The heavy doors closed behind her. Thunder rolled across the dark sky. She stood alone on the hotel steps as cold rain soaked her dress and washed away the tears she had tried so hard to hide. She had entered the hotel as Mrs. Blackwood. She left with nothing. No husband. No family. No home. No future. She looked back at the brightly lit ballroom one final time. A bitter smile touched her lips. "Adrian Blackwood," she whispered into the storm, "one day..." "You'll regret choosing to lose me." Lightning split the sky. Unseen by Elena, a black limousine parked across the street. An elderly man watched her through the rain-covered window, his eyes filled with concern. "Drive," he ordered quietly. "Follow her." "Yes, Chairman," the driver replied. The limousine eased into traffic, trailing the taxi Elena had just entered. She had no idea... Tonight wasn't the end of her story. It was only the beginning.
