Chapter 1
Lyra's POV
It was a full moon tonight, but unlike every other time, it didn’t bring the usual joy.
Tonight, it felt like I wouldn’t survive. I felt terrible.
I stood in the center of the pack’s square, surrounded by the very people I had grown up with. People who once smiled at me, shared meals with my family, who used to respect me. Now, they couldn’t even look me in the eye.
I stood there, numb, as fear pierced through my skin. My heart pounded so hard, I thought it might leap out of my chest. The night air felt heavy, pressing down like a cage I couldn’t escape from.
Murmurs moved like smoke through the crowd.
“She’s the cursed one.”
The words struck like lightning in my chest. I froze.
I knew that voice.
I turned my head slowly, praying I was wrong. That my ears had deceived me. But as soon as I saw her face, my heart shattered.
She used to be my friend,my sister in everything but blood. We had once sworn to protect each other until our last breath.
Now, she couldn’t even look at me.
She turned away, her shoulders stiff with shame.
Coward.
I wanted to scream her name, to demand answers. Why? Why would she join them? Why wouldn’t she defend me? Didn’t she know me better than this?
But no words came. My throat locked up, my voice drowned in sorrow.
Tears began to stream silently down my cheeks.
How did we get here?
Just a week ago, I was at home with my parents, laughing, planning what to wear for the Moon Festival. Father teased me for still being weak, promising to teach me what I didn’t know. Mother laughed as the both of us argued.
We were respected. My parents served as advisors to Alpha Marcus himself. Loyal. Trusted.
Now, they were dead. Executed publicly. I still hear the snap of the blade in my nightmares. I still see the blood.
And me?
They said I was cursed. That I had brought ruin to our bloodline. That my parents betrayed the pack because of me.
The shaman claimed he had seen it in a vision. Said the spirits whispered my name with scorn. That I was an omen wrapped in flesh. A danger.
And everyone believed him, without proof. Without question.
Even those who once claimed to love me stood in the crowd now, silent.
I was alone. Truly alone.
That was when the truth hit me like a dagger.
No one stands by your side when the world decides you are the villain.
Even those you’d die for will leave you to save themselves.
The crowd parted as Alpha Marcus stepped forward, his presence sharp and cold as ice. The pack bowed in unison to greet him, except me. I couldn’t move. My legs trembled.
His eyes were hard. Empty. Like I had never been part of this pack.
The shaman lifted his hand, his robes fluttering in the breeze. His voice cut through the night.
“For betrayal against the Alpha and the pack, the bloodline shall be marked. Her wolf shall be sealed. She is branded an Omega. Untouchable. Weak.”
A gasp rippled through the crowd.
I couldn’t breathe.
No. Please. No.
I tried to call on my wolf, to shift, to even run, but she was silent. As if she had hidden deep inside me, too broken to respond. Something broke in her when my parents were killed.
Then came the pain.
I screamed, not caring about my throat, as my voice ripping through the silence. The scent of burning flesh filled the air.
I was marked. Branded. Cursed.
When the ceremony ended, Alpha Marcus stepped forward, his voice like frost.
“You are banished from this pack. If you ever return, you will be hunted. Like prey.”
That was it.
My knees buckled. I collapsed to the ground. No one moved to help. No one whispered comfort.
I was nothing to them now. A shadow. A threat.
Tears fell freely. I didn’t care who saw.
The guards came. And dragged me away like garbage. I tried to struggle, to plead, but I had no strength. My soul was bruised. My body hollow.
As they pulled me across the square, I met my friend’s eyes again, but it was brief she couldn't bring herself to look at me for long.
There was regret in her gaze.
But it was too late.
I was thrown beyond the pack’s borders before dawn. No food. No water. Just the clothes on my back and the searing pain on my shoulder.
I walked for hours through dense forest, not knowing where I was going, or if I even wanted to go anywhere.
Eventually, my legs gave out beside a shallow creek. I collapsed, trying to catch my breath and think a little before knowing what to do.
And then
A low growl echoed from the trees behind me.
I sat up quickly, my heart in my throat.
Just when I was about to relax as I didn't see anything I heard footsteps approaching.
I rose to my feet. My breath hitched. Something was there watching me. I was sure of that.
“Stop right there,” a voice barked.
I turned, and without thinking too much, I ran.
Branches scratched my arms. Thorns bit into my skin, but I didn’t care.
I could feel that they were closer now, so I didn't dare to stop.
I ran deeper into the forest. My legs were weak, but fear gave me strength.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed me from the shadows.
I screamed, thrashing. “Let me go!”
He didn’t speak. Just shoved me against a tree, tightening his grip.
I gasped for air, As panic set in . I couldn't see his face very well but I was sure he was one of them.
I pleaded but all fell on deaf hears.
Then he leaned closer and whispered
“You can come with me, or die here .” he whispered.
