Chapter 7 — The Truth About His Mother Daniel stared at the message on his phone. Ask your father what happened to Daniel's mother. His fingers tightened around the device. For seven years, he had accepted the story. His mother had been sick. Her condition had suddenly worsened. The doctors couldn't save her. That was what his father had told him. That was what everyone had told him. So why was a stranger suddenly asking him to question it? Daniel slowly looked at Emma. "You knew." Emma's eyes filled with tears. "Daniel..." "You knew something about my mother." "I knew she was part of what happened." His expression hardened. "Part of what?" Emma looked away. "I can't tell you everything." "Why?" "Because I promised." "To Victor?" Emma didn't answer. Daniel stepped closer. "Who made you promise?" Emma's silence was enough. Daniel turned away and ran a hand through his hair. For the first time, the carefully controlled man he had become began to c***k. "Seven years." His voice was low. "I spent seven years believing you abandoned me." He looked at her. "I hated you for it." Emma's tears fell. "I know." "I thought you chose another life." "I didn't." "I thought you stopped loving me." "I never did." Daniel swallowed hard. "Then what was my mother hiding?" Emma closed her eyes. "I don't know everything." "Then tell me what you know." Emma hesitated. "Your mother discovered something." "What?" "Something about your father's business." Daniel's face changed. "What kind of something?" Emma shook her head. "I never saw the entire file." "Who did?" "Victor." Daniel stared at her. "And my mother knew Victor?" "Yes." Silence. Daniel slowly stepped backward. "My father said she never knew him." Emma whispered, "Your father lied." --- Seven Years Ago Emma stood outside the Hartwell family estate. She had been invited there by Daniel's mother. It was the first time she had ever entered the house without Daniel. Daniel's mother, Margaret Hart, was sitting beside the fireplace. She looked tired. But there was something else in her eyes. Fear. "Emma," she said softly. Emma sat beside her. "Mrs. Hart, is everything okay?" Margaret looked toward the hallway before answering. "No." She reached into a drawer and removed a small envelope. "I need you to keep this." Emma stared at it. "What is it?" "Something my husband must never find." Emma's heart began beating faster. "Why are you giving it to me?" "Because if anything happens to me..." Margaret stopped. Emma's eyes widened. "Don't say that." Margaret reached for her hand. "Listen to me." Her voice trembled. "Daniel trusts you." Emma nodded. "He loves you more than anything." "I love him too." "Then promise me something." "What?" "Whatever happens, don't let him become like his father." Emma didn't understand. "What do you mean?" Margaret looked toward the door again. Then she whispered: "There are people inside this family who would destroy Daniel to protect themselves." Emma froze. Before she could ask another question, footsteps echoed through the hallway. Margaret immediately took the envelope back. "Go." "But—" "Go, Emma." Emma stood. As she reached the door, Margaret called after her. "Emma." She turned. Margaret looked at her with tears in her eyes. "Whatever they tell you..." She paused. "Don't believe that I betrayed my son." --- Present Day Daniel stared at Emma. "My mother spoke to you." Emma nodded. "Yes." "About my father?" "Yes." "What did she tell you?" Emma's voice trembled. "She was afraid." Daniel's eyes became glassy. "Of my father?" "I don't know." "You're lying again." "I'm trying to protect you." Daniel gave a painful smile. "That's what you always say." Emma looked at him. "And that's what you always hated." Daniel didn't respond. He couldn't. Because deep down, a terrible thought was beginning to form. What if Emma hadn't left him because she wanted to? What if she had been protecting him from something he still didn't understand? Suddenly, the conference room door opened. A security officer rushed inside. "Mr. Hart." Daniel turned. "What happened?" "We found this downstairs." The guard handed him a small envelope. Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately. His face went pale. It belonged to his mother. He opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a single handwritten note. Daniel, If you're reading this, then the truth has finally found you. Daniel stopped breathing. Emma watched him. He continued. There is something I never told you. Your father wasn't the person who made Emma leave you. Daniel looked up. His eyes met Emma's. Then he read the final line. It was someone you trusted more than anyone. The note slipped from his hand. Daniel whispered, "Who?" Emma looked terrified. She knew. She had known for seven years. Daniel turned toward her. "Who was it?" Emma couldn't speak. Then the lights suddenly went out. Sophia screamed. A second later, the emergency lights came on. Daniel looked around. The room was empty. Emma was gone. "Emma?" No answer. Daniel rushed toward the hallway. "Emma!" Nothing. Then he saw something lying on the floor. Her phone. The screen was cracked. A message appeared on it. You wanted the truth. A second message appeared. Now come alone. Daniel's heart pounded. Then a final message appeared. Or Emma dies the way your mother did. Daniel froze. For seven years, he had believed he had lost Emma once. Now someone was threatening to take her away again. But this time... Daniel wasn't going to let her disappear. He picked up his phone. And made a call to the one person he had never trusted. His father. "Tell me the truth, Dad." There was silence on the other end. Then Richard Hart whispered: "It's already too late." To be continued...
