Escape From Barriga

1054 Words
David drove the hover bike to the entrance of the town, they were at the outskirts, but not completely away from the town itself. But as luck would have it, the soldiers had the foresight to have a barricade up in order to prevent them or any other suspicious person from escaping the town. David was in quite the pickle at that moment, the stupid parasite had sucked the power cells dry. Without enough juice to power the hover bike they can’t drive far much less fly. Of course the hover bike could charge itself in motion, but that comes with the option that they are not caught by anybody during their escape. But David was stuck with the dilemma of a barricade he could not just smash through at his leisure. David was stumped, and he was rapidly running out of ideas and time. He felt Lilith tap his shoulder as she pointed at the barricade with a pained look on her face. “Just go over the barricade and come down immediately. It won’t take to much power, so there should be enough to get the bike moving.” After she finished speaking David felt the proverbial light bulb go on over his head. It would be in their best interest to avoid any more confrontations with the soldiers, their previous actions of trying to escape the pulse gate had seen more than a few soldiers dead. Adding to that number would not be good for their resume. David looked at Lilith with awe written all over his face. She was smart and fast on her feet. But David also felt sorry for her, the Mana water would have most probably run out by now, so she was definitely feeling immense pain from her missing arm. It was the reason why David had wanted to find some bandages and pain killers. The Mana water might have stopped the bleeding and healed the wound significantly, however it was not a miracle cure that could regrow limbs or cauterize wounds that big. Even his missing toe was too much work for the Mana water to take care of. If he had the purest and un-distilled form of the Mana water, the one gotten from nature instead of the treated and mixed one he had to make do with, he would probably have regenerated both his missing toe and Lilith’s arm in seconds with enough energy left for them to explode into pieces from Mana overload. David shifted his gaze to the road with a resolute look on his face, Barigga had nothing to offer and he really needed to get Lilith some professional help, or at least some drugs to dull the pain. He only had one bottle of Mana water left, and unless it was absolutely necessary he did not want to use it. The almost silent rumble of the hover bike did not startle the soldiers when he made a direct beeline for them. However the sight of him driving a bike the size of a car was enough to move quite a few of them off the road. However one guy was left standing there in front of the barricade with his gun pointed at the rapidly approaching David, seems like this guy wanted to be a hero. Or perhaps he was the hero. David did not give him time to shoot as he pulled out one of his handguns and aimed at the surrounding slabs of reinforced concrete that served as the barricade. But even with its modification the guns could not do much but chip a few inches into the meter thick barricade and raise a cloud of white dust into the air. However that was enough for Mr. Hero to be startled badly enough that his shots went wide and completely missed his target. David could hear the shouts of the soldiers and the loud chattering of the on lookers. When David was barely four feet away from the barricade, he engaged the flight mode and shot up at an incline, almost as if he was going up a ramp. As soon as he was over the barricade David disengaged the flight mode and landed on the tarred road with a screech. David went full throttle as the four one meter tires of the hover bike screamed in protest and left giant skid marks on the ground. The hover bike shot forward amidst the shouts of soldiers and the screams of excited people. David did not look back as he went shooting up the highway with Barigga becoming nothing but a speck in the distance after just a few seconds. David was pumped with adrenaline and it showed in the way he drove his bike. The wind whipped past him in sharp burst as the engine hummed in rhythm with his beating heart. David felt hyper focused and sharp, but it was because of the focus he was able to hear and feel. David was getting a bit more familiar with this feeling, it was like you knew something was there. You can’t see it, but the feeling that you left a coin in your bedside table last night and nothing can change the truth of it. It was a feeling of assurance, of connection, or knowledge. It was how he felt when he used his telepathy, and his current target was Lilith. He had not activated it on purpose, but with the adrenaline running through his body, every thing about him was hot and alive like a power line with a high voltage. But David felt and heard nothing, it was as if she was empty. He was connected to her, and he could bet his entire life savings on it. But as far as Lilith’s mind was concerned all David could hear was a void. There was no thought, no emotion, no need. There was absolutely nothing to tell you that she is a living being and not a corpse. David looked behind him to see her staring at him, with her dark eyes. Even her gaze gave nothing, just an unending spiral of emptiness. She was like a door that he couldn’t crack open, at least not at this stage. She was stronger than him both physically and mentally. She asked him “What are you doing?”
