Quietness escaped the room when the office door opened, and Neron raised his gaze, giving a half-smile as he watched Isuzu walk into his office.
After shutting the door behind him, he marched over to a chair and sat down.
"I didn't expect to see you here this soon," Neron let out, dropping his pen on the desk.
"Yeah, and I wish I had better news than this," Isuzu said as he laid a file on the desk.
Downcasting his gaze, Neron stared down at the file for a few seconds before picking it up. Then he opened it, and immediately, the corners of his lips tightened into a frown.
"Damon may not be the one behind the adoption of the humans. At least that's what I know for now." Isuzu explained, looking a bit worried. "The recent girl that got abducted was last seen with the dude in that photo."
Silence fell in the room for a moment. Then Neron slightly frowned and asked, "So how do we know that he doesn't work with Damon?"
"Look at him. We have lived hundreds of years, and I have never seen this dude in my life, in this territory." Isuzu uttered in annoyance.
The thought of a new threat in their territory had Neron pissed, especially when he realized that he has more to lose now with Bella being pregnant and all.
Slowly folding his fingers into a fist, he ignored his thoughts and uttered, "True, he seems like a foreigner. Have you done a background check on him?"
"We are looking into it," Isuzu mumbled, feeling the shift in the atmosphere, and second-guessing if he should say the rest of the reason he visited.
There was a brief pause. Then Neron clenched his brows and mumbled, "Spit it out!"
"Huh?" Isuzu blurted.
"You have that look like you are holding yourself back from saying something, so spill it out."
"The elders were hoping that you would be okay with attending a meeting."
"Why?!"
"Why?"
Sealing his lips, Isuzu jumped to his feet, looking nervously at Neron. Then he sighed at Neron's cold stare and said, "Fine. It's about Bella and this new threat."
Silence instantly fell in the room as Neron glared at him and asked, "What about Bella?"
"I don't know. It's the elders that are hosting the meeting. I am only the messenger."
"The messenger?!"
"Yes. So ask them and not me. Now, I have somewhere to be that is not here."
Annoyed, Neron watched Isuzu rush out of the room, and then his gaze dropped to the photo in the folder when the door shut.
After taking a long look at the guy in a black hoodie jacket, he felt a sense of uneasiness, and he snapped the folder closed, sluggishly resting back in his seat.
Everything had become a mess, and he knew that. His biggest worry now was that Damon wasn't the leader of his pack anymore, and if someone else takes over, the risk of losing Bella will be high.
The math was simple in his head. If the wolves want to get back at him for his actions that will equal killing Bella because everyone knew that she was his weakness now.
A sudden rush of anger spiked in Neron, and he slapped the desk, shouting, "Damn it!"
How easy it was to lose her was a fear he hated to acknowledge, and the fact that they were about to have kids at such a crucial time, only made him feel useless in a sense.
Yet his last breath is what he's willing to give up to protect Bella and his kids. But that can only happen if she takes her last breath first, which to Neron was a curse he just realized that he had.
After getting ahold of her phone, Bella's smile widened at the thought of a date with Neron as she stared at his message on her screen.
"Are you sure you will be able to handle the report alone?" Lily's voice distracted her from the phone screen, drawing Bella's attention to the naive look in her eyes.
Even though Bella felt exhausted already by all the assistance she had done in the department for today and she wasn't sure how long she and Neron's date was going to last, she forced a faint smile and nodded, mumbling, "Yes,"
"If that's the case, then I will leave now. My boyfriend is supposed to pick me up soon." Lily said with a grin. "Thanks, Bella, and see you tomorrow!"
After Lily left, Bella rested her forehead against the desk and whimpered, annoyed at herself and how easily she was used.
The sound of the door suddenly opening made her hastily raise her head and gazed back at the door to see Diana and Addo, staring at her in concern.
"Are you good," Diana finally mumbled.
Standing to her feet, Bella grabbed her bag, smiled to mask her frustration, and said, "Yes. Let's go."
The entire drive to the restaurant was occupied with awkward silences, and every now and then Addo and Diana would stare at Bella.
Finally, when the car came to a stop, she glared at them and mumbled, "What?"
"Is everything okay?" Diane slowly asked, focusing on her calm eyes.
Subconsciously, Bella's bottom lip trembled as she whispered, "I don't know. It still kind of feels so weird that Jerome and Jereme are not here. I missed those two... like a lot."
"True! Their absence makes me want to choke the hell out of Damon!" Addo blurted out before getting a grip on her tongue.
Then she and her sister gazed at Bella, wondering what was going on in her head, even though her expression was calm.
"Me too," Bella coldly uttered with sadness dancing in her eyes, knowing that those words were metaphors.
Both Neron and Damon had been the cause of her losing someone, and she didn't know if she could hold them for it. But that didn't mean she wasn't still a bit mad and hurt about the losses she have had because of them.
But her biggest fear still lives on in her, and each time she lies about it, she feels it eating her alive. Yet, she didn't have the guts to tell the truth to the person she holds so close to her heart... her mother.
After getting ahold of her emotions, Bella pushed the door open, drew a breath, and got down from the vehicle, letting out softly, "Neron wasn't kidding. This place looks really fancy."
Allured by the building, Bella gawked for a while. But then she slightly shivered at the feeling that someone was watching her.
Slowly she gazed to her right. But Neron's voice hastily drew her attention to the left, and she softly smiled, staring into his eyes.
"You look pale," Neron mumbled, frowning slightly. "What's wrong?"
"Huh?" Bella whispered in confusion.
Deciding that he might just be overreacting, Neron took off his coat, placed it around her, and mumbled, "Let's get you inside and out of this cold."
As Bella obediently followed him in, she looked to the right and stared intensely at the guy walking away in a black hoodie jacket before facing her front.
