Are We Okay?

Chapter 15

I serve everyone their breakfast, then sit down beside mama. 

"Where's Abdullah?" baba asks. 

"He's getting ready, he'll be down," I reply, then shut my eyes, praying before digging into my food. 

"Daneen?" mama asks Sahil. 

"She was in the bathroom when I came down," he answers. 

Just as he finishes, Daneen walks down the stairs. 

"Asalam Alaykum," she whispers. 

"Walaykum salam," we all reply. 

She turns around to walk away, but stops when mama calls her. "Won't you eat?" 

"I'm not hungry," she mumbles.

"Daneen, you are pregnant, if not yourself think of the baby," mama says. 

"I don't feel like eating anything," Daneen says. 

"Daneen just eat something, at least a little bit of roti," baba says. She turns around emotionlessly. 

Abdullah jogs down the stairs with his phone pressed against his ear.

"Where are you going?" mama asks him. 

"Out, I'm skipping breakfast today, this is important," he says. 

"Are you meeting her?" Aisha asks. I look at her, then at him. 

After a while, he sucks in some air, then replies and his answer completely shatters me, "Yes." 

He walks past Daneen, who throws him dirty looks. 

I shut my eyes slowly, letting some air out. "Daneen, eat something please," I whisper. She glances at me, but just walks up the stairs. 

"Daneen!" Sahil gets up and walks up to her. She looks down at him with a raised eyebrow. He holds her hand, then pulls her over to the table. He makes her sit down, then holds his own plate and starts feeding her.

We all smile as they both stare at each other lovingly. "See? That wasn't so hard, you finished my plate already," he says. 

She rolls her eyes playfully, then chuckles. 

"I'll get you another." She takes the plate and fills it up, then sits. He starts to take it but she moves it away. "You fed me, so I'll feed you too." She smiles. 

"When did lil' Daneen get so smart?" He fake gasps. 

"Hey!" Daneen yells, then smacks his shoulder lightly and they both laugh. 

I feel my hand being squeezed. I look up to find Zara bhabhi smiling at me. That's when I realize that I am crying. Ya Allah, what am I doing! I wipe my tears instantly, then smile at her.
