ALASTAIR AND ALF BENT over a map of the lakes in the nearly empty squad room of the Birch Lakes police station while Brita checked in with her boss. Brita’s partner, Bud Hinks had filled the locals in on the situation and had taken most of the Birch Lakes force with him to Sandon’s cabin in the woods.
Brick had contacted the BLPD on the flight over, to initiate the required federal, state, local, and zoning permissions for landing off-airport. When they learned what was going on, the locals called in all fifteen of their reserve squad and put them at the Honeybuns’ disposal, along with a couple of spare cars that had seen better days.
