7 Overruled

POV Mason “Hey! I’m trying to focus!” Jackson snapped while Brenden continued to wear a trail of unnecessary stress into our dorm room floor. However, the call from Jackson stopped him in his tracks. He turned over his shoulder and growled lowly. “Focus?! Why bother? According to our esteemed elder brother, we don’t need to bother with such trivial things.” Brenden hissed back. “He is going back home and we are forced to follow. Now we don’t have anything to plan for.” “There he goes again.” My wolf grumbled. I scoffed towards his obvious warning and stared down at my textbook, trying my best to hide my responses to Brenden’s tantrum. “I don’t know why this is bothering Brenden so much but he needs to put a lid on it. Jackson is right. We do have to focus. The last thing I want to do search for a tutor again.” My wolf chuckled while I continued to stare at the text on the pages. Even the ticking of my watch was starting to get on my nerves. Brenden is at a whole different level. For now, I’m just thankful we have family that works at our new school so we could get a head start. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t helping much. I really hate chemistry. I’ve avoided it the entire time I’ve been in high school, but I won’t be able to graduate if I can’t get this done. Stupid prerequisites. “We are trying to make sure we don’t fall on our faces when we get to our new school. We are the next alphas of our pack. We need to set an example.” I groaned before staring back at some random formula. Brenden snorted. “Alphas. As in, more than one. Right. So why is it that only one of us is making the decisions here, huh? I as the next alpha don’t want to go to some run-down school when we have more opportunities here.” “The school in our pack is ranked as one of the top institutions in the region by wolves and humans. We won’t just be there to be alphas. Like Mason said, I’m not going to be the one to fall on my a*s. I want them to know what this boarding school has to offer. Now, you may be the next alpha along with Mason, Lucas and I, but…. Aren’t you the youngest?” Jackson said, and I cleared my throat as I held in a laugh. I don’t think Brenden needs anymore jabs to his pride. “Fine! Whatever. If you two want to stay his mindless drones for the rest of your life, then fine.” Brenden slammed his foot into the ground, proving exactly what Jackson had insinuated. He’s acting like a child. Sighing heavily, I turned in my swivel chair and gave him my full attention. Nothing I can do about chem now and I’m not going to stress myself out about it. “What are you talking about?” “I’m talking about the fact that you two really are okay with sharing the spotlight all the time. He’s only…what…five minutes older than you Mason. And you Jackson…fifteen? Me maybe twenty. Not even a full hour went by before all of us were born and we are always following behind him like some pup that can’t wipe their own butt. Why?!” Brenden shouted. “Shh! We have neighbors.” Jackson hissed. “Great! We can just add that to the list. Did any of you think we’d have to share rooms with each other, let alone Issac and Thomas, while we are at a school where we are seen as kings?!” Brenden added. “Brenden, we agreed to work with our friends and share our dorm for their safety. Being an alpha is not just about being king. We also need to learn sacrifice so we can better serve our people. Let’s also not forget that we aren’t the king, present or future. I don’t have any interest in being part of the royal pack either. Do you?” I pressed, more interested in his response than I initially thought I’d be. Brenden clicked his teeth then growled lowly. “We don’t serve or owe them anything! Royal pack or not. You two are soft and Lucas…he’s just pathetic.” Jackson laughed coldly before facing our brother as well. I think he was trying to tackle world history or something. “Dude. Just let it go. It wasn’t all Lucas’s decision. Our father pushed for it. Also, I am more than happy to head to the ring to show you how soft I am.” Brenden growled and pushed himself towards Jackson. “Even worse! Name the time and the place brother.” “Any time little brother.” Jackson stood to his feet, ready to fight him right now. “And it’s officially gone too far.” I sighed as my wolf cackled in my mind. I was about to get up and stop this nonsense when the door opened. “Hey! What is going on here?” Lucas asked, walking into our room. “Why are you two in here?” He added, staring at Jackson and Brenden. They shared their own room across the hall while our friends took the rooms in between. More strategic and safer for them. “Don’t worry about it, brother. Jackson and I were just trying to get ahead on our…favorite subjects.” I added, trying to ease the tension suffocating the room. Lucas chuckled and fell back on his bed before glancing at Brenden. “Oh, and was Brenden playing teacher?” He asked. Jackson clicked his teeth while he folded his arms. “More like playing anarchist.” He hissed. “Mind explaining in more detail, Mason?” Lucas asked through our link while Brenden continued to glare at Jackson. “Long story short, I think Issac may be on to something. Brenden really is acting like he’s better than everyone else. Including the three of us. It’s been over a year of this. I don’t know where his delusions of grandeur originated from, but they need to end.” I said with a heavy sigh. “Issac being right…. That isn’t a good thing.” “I’m aware of that, but that’s beside the point. We need to know the best way to handle this. Quietly.” “Based on the arguing I eavesdropped on in here, I don’t think Brenden will let us handle this peacefully.” “Huh, so you did hear what was going on. Why bother asking me then?” “I wanted to see if you would cover for him like you have in the past.” “Not since you and Issac looped me in to your theories and you know it. We cannot be a team if one of the members has a vendetta against the others. I just hope he’s just blowing off some steam. It really was out of the blue to transfer all of us out of here. We’ve been going to this academy for six years.” “I know Mason, but dad is also right. We need to know our people more than these aristocrats. It’s not like we are making any more connections here than we can make at home. The only thing people want from us is our attention, not the other way around. That’s not good enough for me to care about staying here.” “Are you two listening to this?!” Jackson shouted. Lucas and I turned to see what Jackson was screaming about, and he rolled his eyes irritably. “Of course! The elders were in their own little world.” Brenden growled, throwing his hands in the air for more emphasis. “Enough Brenden. Go workout and cool off.” Lucas said, rubbing his eyes. I’m sure he’s more stressed about everything else than this petty squabble, but Brenden wouldn’t know that if it slapped him in the face. I genuinely think he doesn’t realize we notice a difference. “F**k you!” Brenden shouted before heading out of our room and slamming the door. Jackson groaned and walked over to fall into Lucas’s desk chair. “That went well.” “Anyone else have any other objections?” Lucas asked, looking straight at Jackson, the party animal. “Meh. I was hoping to shut down the school this year with the best party ever, but I’ll survive. We can just move it to the packhouse instead. I’ve already got it all planed out.” Jackson said. “ Besides, I’ve learned you have your reasons over the years.” “Thanks bro.” Lucas said before throwing a football at him. “Now get.” Jackson caught the ball before racing out of the room, textbook in hand. “How is it that we have one brother that seems to love life more than anyone while we have another that wants nothing more than to be a selfish twit.” “I just love it how everyone thinks we are supposed to be all buddy buddy just because we share the same egg.” Lucas growled. “Yeah…that comes with its own…additional problems too.” I added and he glared at me, catching the double meaning. “Not this again.” He groaned. “Nothing else and I mean nothing else needs to be added to my plate right now Mason.” “What? I thought the other reason we decided to head home is because we haven’t found her yet.” I asked, holding back a chuckle. “Look, Mason, the likelihood that we will find her is rare and far in between. The percentage of fated mates have dropped significantly in our world. No one bothers to wait anymore. I’m not even worried about that nor will I waste time on it when we get back.” Lucas said. “I know you want to find her more than any of us, but we need to be realistic. Enough of this. No more bringing it up.” He wasn’t wrong. If there was one thing in this world that gave me hope, it would be the mate bond. So many people have found their mates here over the years while many others have hoped to be ours. I know she isn’t here and not for lack of trying. Maybe our mate will be able to help us with our Brenden problem too. The possibilities are endless. “We should be trying harder Lucas. If we are going back to play nice with the pack, we should also look for our mate.” He sighed heavily finally facing me. “Why? How many times do I have to say this? There is enough going on without adding a romantic relationship on top of it.” “Because we are already eighteen. She has to be out there somewhere. The painful part is seeing everyone else having what, at least, I’m craving.” Lucas chuckled, standing to his feet. “Look. One thing at a time. If the goddess wants us to have a mate, then we will. If not, don’t let it get to you too much. Who knows, if we don’t find her, the four of us can have our own mates.” “The only place we haven’t been is back home, Lucas. I just have a feeling she might be there. Then, we can all have what we need to…I don’t know, balance us out. Especially Brenden. I know it will be good for him.” “Brenden doesn’t even like sharing the title with us. What makes you think he’s going to share our mate. However, I will kill him if he takes her from us because of his selfishness or whatever the hell is going on with him lately.” Lucas growled. I didn’t even think about that until now, but Lucas was right. There will be bloodshed if he even thinks about hurting or rejecting her. I smirked as I felt darkness cloud my vision. “Ha! You’d have to get in line.”
