POV Brenden
Storming down the hall, I decided that my i***t brother may have a point. I need to get off some steam. Even if it was his fault, how could I lose control like that?! “It’s because our little group isn’t thinking about the bigger picture like always. It’s always down to us to see reason. That school won’t have anything we need, and I don’t care about anyone there. Especially since we won’t find our mate in a school like that. All the pups that attend are beneath us. Not worth our time. I’m not going to search the world to look for her and I don’t want to know our people on that level. We are alphas. They should be pining to talk to us, not the other way around.”
I would have been dense not to notice my wolf’s push pin on finding his mate. Aside from Mason and Jackson, Lucas and I really don’t care if this happens or not. Fated mates aren’t just falling from the sky. Not to mention there are four of us. Even if we get the same mate, we are not the same people. We’ve dated here and there and trust me when I say, we have completely different types.
“Oh please that’s all anyone will be doing the minute we step through the front door. The school will be lucky to have us. Now about you and this mate bond.” I growled and I could see him regressing in my mind. “It seems like my brothers aren’t the only ones looking for her. That girl will be the least of my problems. We are already seen as fourth in line for everything. She will just be another thing we have to share with the rest of them. Something that I cannot call, or reject, as mine. Not to mention we all know she’s not here at least. No matter where she is, all I care about is what she can give me. If she’s just as useless as my brothers, then there isn’t a mate to be had.”
“Power isn’t everything Brenden. Do not hurt our mate because of your ego.”
“Tell that to Lucas!” I snapped back.
“Lucas isn’t power hungry. You are!”
“Oh shut it! You are the one talking about our mate being some elitist. Or did you not just say we wouldn’t find her in our new school because those kids aren’t ranked.” I growled before racing into the woods, leaving my clothes in shreds behind me. Sometimes I wish I could leave him behind too.
“You know, you wouldn’t be able to shift without me.”
“You wouldn’t be able to live without me.” I snapped back and finally I heard the bliss of silence.
-----
I blew the smoke from my mouth as Vanessa curled her body into my side. Sighing heavily, she looked up at me like I was the star fallen just for her. Ugh. When did she get this clingy? “I love when you come to visit, but something seems to be…I don’t know….off with you today.” She hummed quietly before sliding her hand over my chest as if this relationship was romantic in any way. “Is there anything I can do to make it…better?” She whimpered, pressing further into me.
I pulled away from her and sat on the side of the bed as I stared out of the hotel window. “I have to get back to finish packing my things.” I grunted. She shifted in the sheets, but I didn’t bother to turn and look at her.
“What? That’s not what I asked you about Brenden.” She huffed.
“I know what you asked me. I straight up don’t care. Get dressed. I’m checking out with or without you.” I snapped back before walking into the bathroom to get ready for another day. I do not want to go back to that dorm of perfect pupils. If there was literally anywhere else I could go, I would. I know I won’t get that luxury though. I don’t have time for dad to get on my tail like Lucas already is. One wolf biting at my ankles is enough.
Putting my cig out on the ashtray placed on the bathroom sink, I turned the shower on and quickly made my way through my daily routine. When I made it back out into the room, Vanessa was fixing her hair as she shifted in the tight red dress she wore last night. “I still don’t know how you think she is the best we can do.” My wolf grumbled.
I rolled my eyes and grabbed my jeans. “I don’t think I asked for your opinion.” I hissed back.
“Babe, are you listening?” Vanessa’s voice whined through the room like nails on the chalkboard.
I turned to her with a glare that put grown men on their a*s. “Alpha.” I snapped.
She raised a brow before rolling her eyes and focusing back on the mirror. “Word on the street is, that rogue girl shacking up at Jeremy’s is coming to school this year.”
“What is she talking about?” My wolf asked.
I stayed quiet and continued to get my clothes on. I don’t have time for frivolous gossip. The fact that the rogue even exists is probably not true. I can’t see my dad allowing some random rogue to live within our pack without saying a word about their past and how they ended up on their own. “Jessica seems to be really flustered about it. It’s hilarious. I don’t know why she’s so worried about her relationship with Jeremy. She should be more confident in herself like we are.” She added.
I threw my black leather jacket over my white t-shirt and grabbed my motorcycle keys from the nightstand. “Leave by eleven.” I warned before heading out the front door of the suite, leaving her shouting after me.
I rolled up to our dorm and cut my bike off. I heard some girls screaming in my direction and, just like with Vanessa, I didn’t bother to give them any of my attention. It’s almost noon and I’m sure those three are not going to be happy with me if I don’t get my stuff together. Dragging my feet, I made my way up to the top floor. Bobbing through the hall of people moving in and out of their dorms, I found myself in an empty dorm when I arrived back at our suite. Odd. Even Issac and Thomas’s stuff were taken out of the room. I rolled my eyes and headed to my room. Maybe those two are getting a better room. I know I would if I was them.
Without a second thought, I headed out of my room in the suite. Looking around the space, I noticed Jackson had already finished packing and left. Wow. They didn’t even bother to wait for me. I scoffed and turned to the boxes on my bed, stunned to find a letter on top of one with my name on it. I raised a brow and grabbed the thick parchment. Maybe it’s another way for Lucas to yell at me. He could have just sent me a link. That’s much easier to ignore.
Or maybe…it’s from…them again.
About a year ago, I stumbled across a pen pal of sorts. They’d send me cryptic messages and I’d irritably try to figure out who sent them or where they came from, but even until this day, all I’ve gotten from these bits of paper is someone who just…understands. I ripped open the paper and looked over its contents.
Sharing isn’t always fun, is it?
I looked over the opening sentence again and knew immediately it had nothing to do with my brothers. It was them. “What the hell?” I mumbled under my breath. Here we go again.
Just because you are a set of four doesn’t mean you are required to share everything with them. Maybe it’s time for you to get what you deserve. I hope you agree. If you do, I’ll know and, of course, I’ll be in touch soon.
I stared at the note and reread the note as many times as I could as if they would create a name to go with the cryptic words. Odd. As usual, not one indicator to tell me who left this letter, but I am now very intrigued to see what ‘soon’ means. I looked around the room to see if there was something else I was missing before I heard footsteps. I cleared my throat and threw the letter in my box full of clothes I didn’t bother to fold just in time for Mason to walk into the room. “Good to know you’re back.” He froze mid stride and sniffed the air before smirking. “And even better to know you uh…let off some steam?” He added knowingly.
“She’s worth a good lay every now and again.” I grumbled before throwing more stuff in another empty box.
“Right. I just came by to see if you needed any help. I see you rode the bike back. You might need a car to get your stuff back to the house.”
“I might.” I snipped, grabbing the new textbooks off my bookshelf.
“Good. Then, I’ll wait.” He added with a chuckle before plopping into Jackson’s old desk chair.
I slammed the books in a box and turned to face him. “What is it, Mason? I know you drew the short end of the stick to come looking for me. What does dad or Lucas want this time?”
“Nothing. I’m honestly here to help you finish packing. We start at our new school tomorrow and I’m sure the kids who will have this dorm after us would appreciate a timely departure.”
“Why do I have a feeling you are pulling my leg?”
“Say whatever you want, but I’ll be here when you are ready.”
“Right. I’m sure the new kids will be elated that they were able to stay in the same dorm as the next king.” I added as I rolled my eyes. “Looks like their parents finally said they deserved a better place to stay. I guess when we left they finally decided they deserved better.”
Mason raised a brow as I watched the gears click into place in his mind. “Oh no. They are actually staying in our pack house.”
I furrowed my brow. “What?” I asked.
“They are coming with us!” Mason added excitedly.
That’s…totally suspicious. “Okay? Why?”
Mason shrugged and pulled open my closet. “Who knows. Royals are weird. I’ll help you finish packing. Mom’s making your favorite tonight. Ribeye.”
I felt my mouth fill with drool, and I accelerated through the room as the promise of mom’s cooking filled my mind and the information from that note disappeared into the recesses. Maybe heading home won’t be too bad.
