POV Ophelia
“You sure you’re still okay with all of this?” I glared at Jeremy, and he raised his hands in defeat.
“You’re the reason why I’m here in the first place.” I grumbled switching over to sign. Sal reminded me again this morning that the school had many human students. I didn’t want Jeremy to look crazy if he’s responding to me and I haven’t said anything…out loud. Even though I was tempted to, if he asked me if I was okay or not, again! It’s not my image that will be tarnished. Maybe that will give Jeremy the incentive to let me go back to the shop and never talk about this school thing ever again.
“I am and I’m still not taking it back. Best decision I’ve ever made. You are a senior. It’s a cool school. You’ll have fun. Promise.” He added shoving his hands in the pocket of his lettermen jacket.
“Doubt it.” I signed again and he laughed lightly. What does a jock know? Any school would be cool for him. Not for the nerdy girl who prefers the library over the lunch tables. A nerdy girl like me.
“What the hell?! Jeremy?!” A squeal came from behind us, and we both turned to see who the noise belonged to.
“Pardon?” He asked.
“What are you doing here with this…thing?!” She asked, looking me over like I was some sort of chewed gum on her shoe.
“I have no idea what you are talking about or who you’re referring too.” Then, without warning, she slammed her lips on his and his eyes almost popped out of his head.
She turned to me and smiled before brushing the smeared lipstick off his lips. “Paws off, omega.” She growled before storming off and dragging Jeremy along with her.
“And so, it begins.” I called to my wolf who just huffed at me.
“Wouldn’t be this painful if you just accepted the bond with your mate!” She whimpered. She knows it wasn’t possible, but she still holds out hope…two years later. He was horrible to us when we were young and publicly re…rejected us and she still holds out hope.
It’s sad that wolves love their mates this much. Now I understand why the grown-ups tell you how hard it is to get over a rejection. How can you when your wolf won’t let you? If I didn’t have Sal and his family, I really would have gone insane by now.
“He’s not our mate!” I shouted, doing my best to pull Joshua as far away from my thoughts as possible. “If you recall, he literally claimed our sister over us in front of the whole school. There is nothing that he could ever do to make me grovel at his feet for a second chance.” I can’t believe she still thinks this is my fault. She’s the one who can’t see that boy for what he is. A monster. No matter if I’m a gamma, alpha, or omega, my mate should love me for me. Because I know he never would, I can’t think of a better name for him but an evil monster.
Then, startling me out of my thoughts, another voice popped into my mind, and I winced at the intrusion. “Sorry Lia. I have no idea what she –” Before Jeremy could finish his excuse, I blocked him out of my mind. I didn’t want to hear what he had to say. He promised he wouldn’t leave me behind, but I guess those were just words to lure me out of my sanctuary.
“Look, we have other things to worry about now that our pseudo brother just abandoned us in front of enemy territory.” I growled, and she sighed in defeat.
“I’m sorry Ophelia. I just….” My wolf whimpered and I shook my head.
“I know…trust me…I know. If the world wasn’t so cruel, I wouldn’t have to do this to you. I wish I didn’t but I’m protecting both of us with my decision. You have to know that.”
“I do.” She finally agreed.
“Alright then, enough of this conversation. One stressor at a time. Please.” I begged. I felt her relax and curl up in the back of my mind and I was grateful for the silence. Taking a deep breath, I looked over at the large imposing buildings made of red brick. Here goes nothing. One step at a time.
I darted my eyes around to see if anyone was looking at me strange, strained my ears to make out if someone was talking behind my back, but there was nothing of the sort. Many would think this is torture, being invisible and all. But I’m in heaven. I have already felt the reality of being in the spotlight and, if I can help it, I’ll never go there again. A small smile formed on my face, and I decided it was early enough for me to explore the campus a bit before looking for the office.
The first stop on my adventure was the quad. It was beautiful and full of students studying, talking, watching something on their phones, and even kicking around a soccer ball. It was so…normal. I took a deep breath and enjoyed the sights. Just then, the bell rang through the quad. I gasped before running to the building identified as the office. I may be a new student, but my goal is not to arrive late. The later I enter, the more eyes will be on me. Maybe exploring wasn’t a good idea. I raised my head over the shuffling students until I finally found the words ‘OFFICE’ labeled above a large red door at the far end of the quad.
Sighing in relief, I bobbed and weaved through the remaining students and gripped my backpack tighter. I can do this. Finally making it to the door, I yanked it open and stumbled inside. Another ring of the bell sounded in the room as I jumped and stumbled into someone’s back.
“s**t!” I shouted in my head and my wolf laughed at my blunder. “I’m glad I amuse you.” I hissed back at her, and she immediately became silent. “Oh, got nothing to say now?” I pressed.
Oh, but she did.
“Mate!” She shouted, and I felt my face pale.
“No…there is no way he found me here!” I shouted at her clawing and begging.
“Mate! Mates!!” She screamed, and I balled myself up on the floor and closed my eyes. Not here. Not him. He’s going to give me hell. I’m sure he’s going to drag me back to that horrid place. I have no idea what has happened there since I left and I’m terrified to find out. I don’t want to go back. I can’t go back.
“Are you okay?”
My eyes shot open when I heard the voice in front of me and the scent shifted to redwood. It engulfed my senses. I slowly let my eyes meet the person in front of me and his brows raised in shock. That’s…not Joshua. “Dude! You scared the hell out of her!” Another voice called and he seemed a little softer than the initial growl of the grizzly man in front of me, but only just. If I wasn’t paying attention well enough, they, however, could have been identical. Except for their scents and choices of facial hair. This one was delicious. Like a perfectly baked pumpkin pie.
“What gave you that idea? Was it before or after she looked like she was hiding from an assailant.” Mint and chamomile. Another one?!
“Mates!” My wolf shouted again, and I pulled away from the man in the middle to glance at the other two.
The one in the middle tipped my chin towards him to stare into my eyes again. “Mine.” He growled lowly, and I shuffled away a bit. He furrowed his brow and the other two took one of my arms, gently pulling me up to my feet.
“Not now, Lucas.” The one on the left hissed. L-Lucas?
Wait…I know these guys. I felt my gut drop as my lonely memories reminded me exactly who they were. They…they…. “What is taking you guys so long?” Another voice came in from behind me and I chewed on the inside of my mouth while my wolf continued to shout about mates. They can’t be my mates. I mean I’ve heard about the lucky few who are graced with a second chance, but I never even asked for the first one! No! I…I don’t want this! “Wait…what the hell are you doing here? We don’t need defective wolves in our territory.” The same voice growled defensively.
I winced and the three guys in front of me stared at their brother then back at me. This action continued over and over until the guy in the middle, Lucas balled his hands into fists, taking a defensive stance toward his brother. “The hell? What do you mean defective?! She’s our…” He cleared his throat and shifted to a lower tone. “She’s our mate.”
The man in front of me faltered before the two of us locked eyes. “This must be a sick joke. The little maid girl from Duston’s pack is our mate?”
“Little maid girl? What are you talking about Brenden?” Lucas asked before the other two started whimpering.
I turned back and forth, on instinct, to see if they were hurt. It seemed like they were okay physically, but every part of them looked to be in anguish. “No…there’s no way. No…. No.” The one to my right said. I turned to him and the shock in his eyes was more than enough to give me my answer. I was going to get rejected. Again.
