10 Just Ignore Them

POV Ophelia “Maybe we should give them a chance, Lia. Do you know if they will really be that cruel?” There my wolf goes again. Trying to walk into a fantasy land. Mason’s eyes darted away, and I held back a smirk. “Have we seen anything less from these ranked people. They all have the same response. Every time. Even my family.” If I could even call them that. Even my sister, my twin, didn’t have my back. We may not be identical like the four men staring at me now, but we were still sisters. I guess that happens when your own parents don’t want you. Hell, they made me work at the pack house until I ran away. I was nothing but a paycheck to them. “See, now you remember her Mason?” Brenden smirked, folding his arms and looking me over again. Yeah, I remember too, a*shole. Why does it have to be them?! Joshua, Duston and now the freaking quad alphas. Duston’s cousins. They made my life hell! How in the world am I this unlucky?! I don’t want anything to do with this horrid family and now I’m right in the thick of it. Not to mention their influence. The Alpha and Luna are actually good people once I got to know them, but this pack is still second to the royal family. I don’t have time for this. Knowing the Alpha and Luna is completely different than being mated to their children. Now…now I will never be rid of the Diablo pack. I’m sure these four will want to see them every now and again or vice versa. I never want to be reminded of that place. Even through the eyes of these four men. Not to mention, when they visited, those four were everywhere, lurking in the shadows and relishing in my misery. “T-that’s not the point! I’m so sorry, um….” Mason started, but I just yanked myself away from the two sets of arms slowly pouring warmth and safety into my mind. I walked over to the desk silently without another glance at the four of them. I’m glad Brenden talked some sense into them before I turned out to be the fool. Again. My wolf can be delusional all she wants, but I will not. The woman looked down at me with confusion and I’m sure this was odd to watch. Especially since our entire conversation should be dang near illegal to have around humans, but they were quiet enough. I hope. “Are you alright, dear?” She asked glancing back at the large alphas that, I’m sure, were glaring at me from behind. I could feel their eyes boring holes in my back, but I refused to turn around. I nodded once and grabbed a piece of paper. First thing’s first. I need to get my schedule, then get the hell away from these guys. Thanks to Jeremy and these four, I’ll be late on my first day here. “Hello, my name is Ophelia Hawthorne. I just transferred into this school. My friend told me to come here to get my class schedule.” I wrote and passed it over to her. She raised a brow and read over the document. “Oh, right! Ophelia. I was wondering where you were sweetie. Glad to know you found the office alright. However, Sal and Holly told me that Jeremy would be bringing you here directly?” The question in her tone was obvious and I’m glad she seemed to be on my side. I shook my head and pulled the paper back to me. “He…got distracted. Had to head in first.” I added quickly. I could tell the guys behind me were reading the words now too. She chuckled and nodded. “That’s sounds fine and all, but I’m positive Sal won’t be too happy about that. He’s been working on my old Chrysler off and on for years. Do you want me to put in a word for yah?” She seemed sweet, but I was definitely not going to throw Jeremy under the bus. “No, it’s alright. He’s like a brother to me. I’ll get him back for it. Don’t worry about me.” I added with a mischievous grin, and she laughed with a nod. “Now that’s what I like to hear!” She spun on her chair and grabbed a sheet of paper along with a map and a stack of books before turning back to me with a smile. “Now, here is your schedule and oh, all of your books. I did have a question though. Just per policy.” I nodded and looked over my books. She waited patiently for me to say something then I heard a slap and looked up to see she had slapped her own cheek. “I apologize. I forgot Sal’s orders.” She leaned down and patted my head. “He is a great warrior in our pack, so I respect his wishes. If you ever need anything from me, please don’t hesitate to link for me.” She whispered. Wait…so that’s why the boys were talking about all of this in the middle of the administration building. Quietly or not. “You’re a wolf?!” I asked in shock through a link. “I am, but I live a little closer to the pack’s center than you and Sal’s family. I did hear that he picked up a stray about a year ago. I’m assuming that was you?” I nodded and tried my best to ignore the growling growing louder behind me. I’m sure alphas don’t enjoy being ignored. Whether they already are one or if they are the son of one. Respect ‘owed’ is in their blood. “Yes, that is me. Thank you for all of this. I’ll keep you in mind if I need anything…um….” “Ms.Rose.” She hummed happily and the sound of her voice through the link was warm and welcoming. She wasn’t just doing this for Sal. It sounded like she really wanted to help me. I picked up the stack of books with ease and thanked all my lucky stars that I was a wolf. These books are huge. I guess that’s what I get for taking all AP classes. “Nope. You four stay here.” She shouted once I started for the door. I could see their shadows looming over me but one sentence from her and they froze in their tracks. “Aunt Rose.” Lucas hissed back. “Don’t you start that with me. You guys, back off now.” Aunt Rose?! I snapped my head back to see the young woman and she smiled before waving her hand towards the door. “Have a good first day sweetie.” She added and I ran out of the door faster than I ever have before. When I made it to the main building, everyone was already in class, and it made it much easier to find the area where my locker number was as directed on the additional paperwork she added to my schedule. But it does confirm that I’m late. Just my luck, I apparently cannot see either. Slamming into yet another person, I watched as my books toppled to the floor. “Woah there. Are you alright?” I slowly looked up to see a man that could only have been carefully crafted by the gods. Shaking myself out of my own world, I immediately squatted down to grab my things and stand back up to find another man behind the one that almost looked like he was glowing. I dropped my head and ran around them. However, I wasn’t far enough away to not hear the second man laugh. “That was…different.” He stated through his chuckles. “I guess I’m just used to….” He continued talking but I didn’t wait around to listen to what he was used to. I was too embarrassed. How could I run into two people on the same day? Was I always this clumsy?! I guess I can’t handle this after all. First period isn’t even over and I’m starting to see myself as a freak. I’ll…I’ll tell Sal the minute I get home. I attempted my locker combo and sighed in relief when it finally opened. Placing my books in their proper places, I tossed my backpack in there as well and only grabbed a couple of pens, the textbooks I needed for the next couple of classes and a notebook. That seemed good enough. Once I finally found my first classroom, I folded up my schedule and shoved it into my back pocket. Knocking on the door, I walked in, and the teacher turned to look at me before putting down the whiteboard marker. “Oh, awesome. You made it.” He turned to the class, and I shot daggers at my supposed friend who left me while the teacher started to introduce me. Unlucky for him that we had the same first period. “Sorry! We had a serious conversation after she dragged me off.” Jeremy pleaded. “We will have a serious conversation after we get home!” I snapped back. He cleared his throat, and I could tell he was trying not to laugh. D*ck! “Ms.Hawthorne.” I jumped and turned to the teacher. “Would you like to introduce yourself?” He asked and I was about to attempt to tell him I couldn’t, but Jeremy was already on his feet to assist. He didn’t get far though. The overwhelming scent of redwood and mint poured from behind me, halting the both of us in our pursuit to make me look normal. “My name is Lucas, this is my brother Mason, and she is our girlfriend, Ophelia. She just moved here and she’s getting used to the school and everything, but she uses sign to communicate.” Lucas called out confidently. I could tell who was a wolf, and who was human, immediately after his double meaning of the simple word girlfriend. Wait…. “Girlfriend?!” Jeremy shouted in my mind giving off the same shock I felt. I swiftly moved to the remaining seats towards the back of the room without answering any of their unspoken and spoken questions. Jeremy slammed his body in his seat and glared at me. As the teacher told Mason and Lucas where to sit, I finally caved and darted my eyes to Jeremy. “I’m not. Honest.” “You sure about that because Lucas, the oldest of the quad alphas just proclaimed to everyone in this room that you are their mate! I can already hear the gossip flowing through the campus!” Jeremy shouted. I felt my breath hitch and my body slowly going numb when Mason and Lucas sat on either side of me. “I don’t want mates! I…I already got rejected once. I…I don’t think I’ll be able to survive being rejected by four alphas. Why in the world would I be stupid enough to become someone’s mate on the first day of school?! All I want is peace and quiet. Now I have a giant target on my back because of them!” I snapped like it was his fault. I knew it wasn’t, but I needed someone to direct my rage at, and he fit the bill. “Rejected already?!” I winced at his shouting but decided there was no way to cover that up. Nodding once he rubbed his face, sighing under his breath. The teacher started class again and I held my breath waiting for him to continue. “Look. I’m not even going to say I know how that feels, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case this time. The murderous aura pouring off the two of them is making my wolf whimper.” Jeremy winced. I dared a glance at Lucas, then Mason and their eyes were on me. “Is there a reason you are blocking out our link?” Lucas asked the minute he noticed my eyes shift towards them. I hastily turned back to the board and tried not to focus on the glares from the others in the classroom. “You two are not the only people I talk to.” I managed to respond. I know one thing. If they are going to toss me aside like Joshua had, I won’t be playing nice with them. What would be the point? “Four. There are four of us, my little spitfire.” Mason linked back. “Why are you doing this to me? Is this some sort of prank? I…I ran away for a reason. It wasn’t to get involved with my previous alpha’s nephews.” I hissed. “We heard. And no. None of us have told Duston or his family and we don’t plan on it. You are our mate now. You belong here. In our territory.” “Isn’t your father still the alpha?” “He is until he finds out we finally have a mate.” Lucas added. “S-So?” “That’s our ticket.” They called together, and I finally saw the pieces click together. “Oh, so you just want me so you can become alpha. You don’t actually want me.” I growled before blocking the link again. If they want to destroy what’s left of my soul, fine. I just want it to be clear; I will not give them the pleasure of doing it for them.
