POV Mason
“You really know how to ruin a good moment. Don’t you?” Jackson growled. I glanced his way for only a moment, making sure I didn’t accidentally take my eyes off of the real problem. Brenden. My brain is still trying to wrap around the fact that he's here at all. If there was one place that would be difficult to enter undetected, it would be a school full of gossiping teenagers.
"Let me at him!" My wolf snapped. He didn't even see his brother anymore. All he saw was a traitor. I wasn't too far off from seeing the same thing.
“I don’t know how you got through our borders, but I promise you will be leaving in a body bag!”
Lucas immediately grabbed hold of Jackson as he thrashed against him. “Jackson! If we kill him now, we won’t get any answers.” Lucas hissed.
Brenden looked between the three of us and laughed lightly. “Oh, you thought I was sticking around? Unfortunately for you, I just came by to let you know your time is almost up. Remember your pack is the only thing in the way of the royals. I don’t think it is in your best interest to keep it that way. I just came by to see if my brothers have some sense. Please, don’t make me kill you.”
I took a deep breath as my wolf slowly rose to the surface. “And what makes you think you can kill us?” I asked curiously.
He turned all his attention to me and threw his thumb over his shoulder at Jackson. “Because, unlike you three, I don’t have a weakness.”
At that, my eyes shifted to pitch black. Holding my wolf back didn't seem like a requirement anymore. “Even a hair missing….”
Brenden shook his head and sighed. “You don’t get to make demands anymore Mason. Like Dad said, I’m no longer your little brother. I’m your worst nightmare. Now, I say one more time, get out of my way, or get removed.” Without another word, he was gone. Literally like some witch or something. How in the hell did he do that?!
Jackson spun on his heels and lunged at Lucas. “I had him!” He shouted. I darted my eyes around the hall, thankful that we were the only ones still straggling behind for first period.
“Jackson, it would have been stupid to fight him now. What would we accomplish? Didn’t you hear him? He said ‘we’.” I added calmly.
“So, just because he said some words, you want to let him go. Let him get to our girl?! No. We finally got her to trust us. I’m not going to bank that on a whim! I warned him, and I’ll warn you two, no one is taking her from me!” Jackson added.
“That’s exactly how he wants you to think. He’s using your blind rage against you. Don’t let him win, Jackson. He said ‘we’ because he isn’t working alone. I have a feeling if we put him down, someone else will rise in his place. The thing we should be worried about is his urge for the throne. That…that’s different.”
“But not impossible. He’s always had an inferiority complex.” Lucas mumbled. I don’t know if that was for himself or meant for our ears, but I’ll take my chances on the latter.
“True, but hear me out. Could it also be a diversion? He may have his own problems he’s dealing with, but Brenden is very determined once he puts his mind to something. He’s not easily swayed.”
“So?” Jackson huffed.
“So, we go to class. Stick to Lia like glue and make sure Brenden remembers who his older brothers are.” I growled and the dark smiles on my brothers faces meant they agreed.
---POV Ophelia---
The minute I stepped into class, worry flooded through my mind, but I knew it wasn’t from me. It had to be from my mates. The question is, which one. We…we had such a lovely morning together. Maybe Mason was stressed out about the game this afternoon. Thanks to me, this is his first game here. I hope he does well. I’ve never really been into sports, but the four…I mean three of them are. I’ll get used to it for them. “Where’s your mind going, Lia?”
I shot my head up to meet Jeremy’s eyes. I wasn’t expecting him to say much to me. Ever since I decided to work things out with Jackson, Mason, and Lucas, he’s been…in a word…distant. “I…I don’t know. I was thinking of um…the midterms coming up.”
“The ones in two months?” He asked, calling my bluff.
“I…yes! Unlike you, I like to plan ahead.” I huffed, trying to make light of the situation.
“Uhuh. Look, I know I’ve been avoiding you the last few days, and I’m sorry about that. It’s just taking me a while to get used to our new dynamic.”
He shifted in his seat while I took a seat in the back between two vacant desks. Ever since I came back to school, no one has been thick enough to ignore the alphas anymore. Now, they keep to themselves, and I am only graced with disrespectful looks every now and again. However…Jeremy was the last person I thought I’d have to keep my guard up around. “What do you mean?”
“You’re wearing his jacket for goddess’s sake! I wanted you to give them a chance, but that was before they hurt you. I…I just don’t want to see you hurt.”
“But you are hurting me now. You’re my best friend and I haven’t even been able to talk to you about my confidence progress or how hard I’m working to protect myself. You’re isolating me for a choice you initially pushed me into. That’s not fair.” I growled back.
“I know Lia…. I know. I’m sorry. I’m just glad you are happy, okay? Can we call it a truce?” I let my mouth fall slack when I heard his response. He…apologized in earnest. I guess this pack really is different from my old one.
“Yeah we can, but no promises I won’t be rooting for the other team to beat you up a couple of times for hurting my feelings for the past week.”
He snorted, trying his best to hold in a laugh. The teacher turned to us irritably. Once he realized I was involved though, he decided it was best to ignore us. The minutes ticked by, and I started to get more on edge. Where were they? Lucas and Mason usually follow right behind me. I’m still feeling the worry, but now I’m feeling straight rage. I winced, trying my best to keep my thoughts together.
Staring down at my notes, a small piece of paper fell onto my desk. I sighed and unfolded it. Keeping up with all of them must be too hard. Even for a sl*t like you. I stared at the paper like it was a foreign object. Why would someone even bother writing this? What happens if the teacher saw it? What happens if Lucas saw it? I shivered at the thought and immediately ripped up the small paper. I heard someone click their teeth, but if it was them, I don't care. I’d be grateful I wasn’t as much of an ass as they were.
The chairs on either side of me squealed on the linoleum as Lucas and Mason sat next to me. “Don’t think we didn’t see that princess.” Mason cooed softly.
Crap! How long were they here? “It was nothing. Honest.”
“Sure.” Lucas said. I could hear the exhaustion in his voice and I immediately turned his way.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
He smiled but the tilt of his lips didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m fine, baby girl. I just need a second to breathe.”
“O…Okay.”
“Don’t worry about it. Everything is fine. I’m sure he’s just ticked off at the girl that called you a sl*t. Now we have to figure out how to put a human in the dungeon.” Mason added.
I gasped, and he chuckled, raising his hands slightly to defend his bad joke. “It’s not that big of a deal. I’m more excited about your game than these girls and their pettiness.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Positive Mason. I’m not going to let anything rain on my parade today. I was able to talk to you three this morning and I get to see you play your favorite game. Nothing could possibly make this day bad for me.”
The silence that followed my declaration made me think that I might have spoken too soon. Maybe there might actually be something to rain on my parade. Why do I feel like whatever it is has everything to do with the worry I felt the minute I stepped into this classroom and the rage I feel now?
