24 One Day at a Time

POV Lucas There were times when I wanted to go searching for my brother, but I knew it was just me being selfish. Me wanting to know where I went wrong instead of me trying to be the bigger brother he seems to desperately need right now. “Come on sweetheart. You can do it.” Jackson laughed while Lia blew the hair away from her face. It was early Friday morning and Mason was enjoying his training session with Lia. I’m surprised he isn’t going overboard like he normally does. Training is his favorite time of the day. But I know he is using all his power to minimize any damage against her. I guess it's because he’s her mate. “I’m okay. Just one more round.” Lia huffed. “Sorry babe, but I can’t. I have to head to school for our pregame training.” Mason said. She huffed and folded her arms over her chest. “Awwh don’t be like that. You will be there to cheer me on. I'm really looking forward to it.” He added with a chuckle. "I know, but I was really trying to get a little more time with you today. You push me harder than Lucas and Jackson." She confessed. I pressed my hand over my chest with mock concern. "Wow babe. That hurt." I added. She raised a brow and rolled her eyes. "That's because you know it's true." Mason's smile grew big before he puffed out his chest. "Okay, okay." Don't be sore losers now. And you, my princess, please don't forget to wear my letterman jacket today. Okay?" She nodded happily, and he tapped her nose before racing back to the house. Jackson and I walked over to her and Jackson engulfed her in a hug. She squealed aloud and we laughed. Ever since she left the hospital, she has been trying harder and harder to speak to us. The more she tried, the more confident she became. When she told us why she stayed silent, it was quite a surprise. ---One Week Prior--- The three of us quickly packed away her things while Ophelia watched us race around the room. “I’m so excited you can finally leave this place. Still, I'm a little mad you can’t stay with us though.” Jackson said with a huff. I rolled my eyes and stood up from the bag I had just finished zipping up. “Jackson, we have gone over this. Holly and Sal said they were going to take her back to their house. We will not push the issue.” “We could push it a little bit.” Jackson mumbled under his breath. “Can…can we talk before they get here?” Ophelia whispered through our link. “Of course, babe.” Mason said, raising another spoonful of pudding to her lips. She wiggled over toward him and gratefully took the bite. She is completely capable of feeding herself, but I think the coddling helps ease his wolf's worry over her. The doctors confirmed her health was good to go, but the effects of that rejection were still really hard on her. “I’m going to t-try talking again.” We froze as we looked over her. “Try to talk? Can you talk?” Jackson asked with a huge smile on his face. She nodded slowly. “My parents and my sister hated everything that I said out of my mouth and I…I just stopped talking one day. I…I was too scared to say the wrong thing. Ever since, I've stayed silent or mindlinked.” “When did you stop talking?” I asked gently. She looked between the three of us. “I think I was around five or so? Ever since I left that pack, I wanted to make sure I only focused on showing others the positives so…even telling you this much is a lot for me.” Mason rested his hand on hers. “I’m glad you said something babe. We can work with you too. You don’t have to do this alone.” The smile that followed lit up the room as she engulfed him in a hug. “Thank you! I want to talk. I really do. I just….” “I know baby girl. It’s not going to be easy. But just like we will be there to help you train, we will help you through your trauma.” Jackson confirmed. “But what if I sound stupid or something?” She asked, now focusing on the blanket like it was her lifeline. “You won’t.” The three of us said with conviction. “Okay…. Th-thank you.” She mumbled. Each of us took the time to give her a hug and by the time it was my turn, her parents walked into the room. Sal coughed and I reluctantly pulled away. “Now, now. Every male…get out.” Holly said calmly. Jackson scoffed and Mason smacked him on the back of his head before dragging him out silently. I looked at Sal and Holly before I turned back to our mate. “Remember, we will take this one day at a time. We will see you tomorrow.” She sighed heavily. “Yeah…tomorrow. B-bright and early?” “Of course sweetheart!” Jackson yelled from the hallway. I couldn’t help but laugh. ---Present--- Ohpelia raced out of my bathroom and into my closet, slamming the door behind her and I held in my laughter. Every day after training, Ophelia would go to one of our rooms and get ready for the day. It was getting harder and harder for the four of us to be apart from each other. Her parents were coming around and that was definitely helping. “Why do you always run?” I called toward the closed door before taking a quick shower and getting dressed myself. “Because!” She snapped back through our link. I rolled my eyes and threw on a white t-shirt a black button up over it and some washed-out jeans. Once I got on my shoes, Lia stepped out of my closet dressed in an old band t-shirt cut just above her bellybutton, high-rise black jeans and Mason’s letterman jacket. I'm glad Mason told her to wear it today. I can't wait to give her mine. It is the first time she’ll get to see him play football, and she is more excited than I was expecting. “You look hot babe.” Jackson said, walking into the room, probably to give her another hug. “R-Really?” I froze, lacing up my shoes and Jackson’s feet skidded to a halt. That wasn’t in our heads. “Lia?” Jackson said gently. Her cheeks were beet red, and she bit her lip as she looked anywhere else but at us. Her voice was higher than the one we heard in our mindlink. A soft soprano with a warmth that makes even the coldest days seem sunny. She took a deep breath and we waited patiently. We didn’t want to crowd her, but the fact that she is trying right now is making even our wolves overly excited. “I love her voice!” My wolf purred. “So do I, dude.” I said right back. “I…I’m t-trying.” She whispered out loud again. What I didn’t expect was what happened next. Jackson moved at a speed that I didn’t think was possible and smashed his lips onto hers. She stood frozen for a second and I quickly finished with my shoes so I could strangle my brother. However, I don’t think that was necessary. I walked up to her, and she wrapped her arms around him as he moved closer. “Ha! I got to hear her speak, and I got her first kiss.” Jackson said with triumph. “I swear to the goddess, if you hurt her, Jackson I will sack you instead of the other team tonight.” Mason growled. I could hear the jealousy in his words. “You wish!” Jackson taunted. Finally, Lia pulled away from him and rested her hand on her lips like she was trying to register what had just happened. I pulled her to me and gently placed my lips over hers. If Jackson was going to take what he wanted, there is no reason why I had to wait anymore either. Sighing softly, she pressed into me further, and I couldn’t help the smile that formed on my lips. She wants us as much as we want her. It took a while for the three of us to separate this morning, but when we made it to school, Mason was fuming. I have a feeling Jackson was giving him a play by play. The minute he saw Lia, he didn’t waste any time. He pressed her against her locker and locked his lips with hers. “I may have been the last one, but I guarantee I was the best.” Mason said. The bell rang and I slapped his shoulder. “Hey, we gotta get her to class.” I warned. He pulled away from her and her eyes darted around the halls to see if anyone was watching. Thankfully, the onlookers had the intelligence to be discreet. “You two were almost late to school because you got to make out with her. Why don’t I get that luxury?” Lia’s small fingers gripped his jersey, and he turned his head to give her his undivided attention. “M-Mason.” She whispered and his mouth dropped. “You said my name?” He whispered back, as if his ears were deceiving him. She nodded slowly, and he kissed her again before resting his forehead against hers. “I can’t wait to hear you say it again.” “See princess. Told you he’d love it!” Jackson said through our link and she squeaked. Pulling away from him, she ran to class and the three of us laughed behind her. Once her cute little body disappeared into the classroom, I heard a chuckle behind us that had me on alert. “Good to know you three are still enjoying your little fantasy.” I snapped my head toward the words and came face to face with Brenden.
