POV Ophelia
They actually want me. After all of this, I’m wanted. I can’t believe…even without a word spoken, they still think I’m worth it. How did…? No, I won’t ask such a silly question. I’m just so happy the moon goddess decided to give me another chance. “She doesn’t hate you. She never did.” My wolf added. “Thank you for giving them a chance. With or without Brenden.”
“Thank you for being so patient with me.” I called to her. “Maybe now I can finally find my voice.”
“I know you can. Just try to push through. Trust me. It is important that you find your way back to your happy and inquisitive mind. No one is here to ridicule you. I know they won't. The family we have built in this pack has confirmed they'd protect us too.”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked curiously. It always seemed my wolf was one step ahead of me all of the time. So frustrating.
She chuckled lightly before huffing and curling up in the back of my mind. “Patience with me is also required child.” She hummed. I wanted to say something back. Anything to push her into telling me what I needed to know but something else came through the link instead.
“Enjoy your fun while it lasts. I will be back to take what is mine! You all don’t deserve the power you were given! Especially you, you filthy omega! I lost everything because of you!” I gasped as a very well-known voice rang in my head. Brenden. My conversation with my wolf was completely forgotten as I stumbled over another pile of words. I needed to speak up. Anything to remind him I’m not afraid but it didn’t work. The words were caught…trapped in my mind, infuriating me, more than I have been in years, as he added his official announcement to claim himself as a rogue to the entire pack.
“He’s gone!” Someone slammed into our room, and I almost jumped onto the ceiling.
“Are you okay?!” Lucas asked as I heaved. Jackson growled at the man that had entered the room with worry on his face.
“Yeah.... He only has himself to blame now. Because of his little declaration, we can treat him like any other rogue that tried to hurt our mate. Perfect!! He should have waited until he was out of the cell before disowning his own pack.” Jackson said, chuckling darkly.
The man shook his head rapidly. “No, that's not what I meant.”
“Alright...then, what do you mean then?” Mason asked while I caught my breath with Lucas’s help.
“Your brother is gone! Like gone gone. Without a trace. We went down to give him his dose of wolfsbane and dinner, but he wasn’t in his cell.” The guard said while his hands shook. I could practically see the steam coming out of Jackson's ears.
“Where were his guards?!” Jackson snapped.
“There weren’t any. I guess whoever was on watch had sympathy for the alpha.”
“He is no longer alpha-future or current-of this pack. I no longer have a fourth son.” My eyes grew when Alpha Reggie stepped around the guard. His eyes shifted from black to hazel and back again. His son’s betrayal really must have taken a toll on his otherwise flawless control. “I apologize for all of this, dear. You did the right thing in accepting his rejection. I am glad the goddess still allowed my other sons the bliss that is being with their mate.”
I waved my hands in front of my face while my cheeks burned. Apologize? To me? The last time I saw him, I knew he didn't want me to cause any trouble and now...because of me, he is disowning one of his own sons. “Please don’t apologize a-alpha. It wasn’t your fault. I…I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. I’m aware of that.”
“Don’t do that!” Jackson snapped back and I jumped again. He gritted his teeth and shook his head. “Sorry, I'm not angry at you...honest.” His gentle apology helped soothe me more than I thought possible. “However, I want you to remember one thing. Don’t take the blame for his actions. There are four of us. We should be able to protect you whether you are weak, strong or somewhere in between. There is no reason for us to have some sort of warrior princess. We are happy with who you are.”
“I wouldn’t decline being trained to be a warrior princess though.” I added, trying to lighten the mood.
“That’s not the point sweetheart. You don’t need to train or do anything but what you want to do. Nothing else.” Lucas clarified.
“Still, all jokes aside, especially now that Brenden seems to be out for my blood, I think a little extra training wouldn’t hurt anyone.”
Jackson snorted and rolled his eyes. “Brenden seems to hate all of us. I’m convinced he might be under some spell or something.”
“No. He’s just power hungry. Always has been. When we were at alpha training, he wanted to fight the prince just to see if Issac was worthy of his title. Issac is one of our closest friends, and we grew up with him. Brenden should have known better than that. Not to mention the straight rage he had when we transferred back home. We aren’t the only alphas that decided to complete their senior year in their pack. It gives us time to learn who we will be fighting alongside. The academy is for us to make outside connections. We need to connect with those we lead.” Lucas said with his hand resting on his chin. I never really knew why they decided to come back to their pack when they had everything at that lovely academy. But now hearing what Lucas just said, it makes sense why Brenden is so combative. I think. Jackson may also have a point. Who...who's right? The only one who could answer truthfully would be Brenden himself.
However, there was still something that piqued my interest. “Then why did the prince come along to your pack? Shouldn’t he learn about his people?” I asked as curiosity got the best of me.
“For the hell of it. But also, to watch Brenden. Even he noticed there was something off about him. And now…now he’s disappeared with a rage I’m not surprised he has reached.” Lucas added. He turned to the guard, now looking at all of us with discomfort. “Find the guards who were supposed to be watching Brenden. I want them locked up immediately for defying their future alphas and endangering our mate.”
“Yes Alpha.” The guard bowed before turning to their father, bowing to him, and disappearing through the large glass door.
“Now what?” Mason asked.
“Now we figure out who helped him. He was so full of wolfsbane he shouldn’t have been able to move for a week. There is no way he just walked out of there on his own accord.” Jackson said.
“No. Now we focus on our mate. Regardless of how he got out, Brenden will have to regroup. We have time. He won’t just lunge for us in a day.” Lucas said as his dad looked at the three of them with what I could only describe as pride.
“Whichever choice you decide to make, remember the three of you and your mate are stronger together.” He said before nodding my way and leaving the room.
---POV ???---
I stared at the man I helped escape as I rolled my eyes irritably. There would have been a quieter way to deal with this, but he decided that he wanted nothing more to do with his family or that pack. Now we don't have an in. The minute they smell him, they will kill him. This boy really does enjoy messing with my plans. It's all fun and games until something goes wrong. Like now.
"So what's next? I finally get to know who you are and see your face, but I'm still skeptical about your choices." Brenden grumbled.
I turned towards him slowly as my eyes turned to slits. "My choices? Because of you, our only way to your mate is now gone."
"She's not my mate! Not to mention you said I could reject her! I did exactly what you said. Now, where is the power you promised me?!"
"I didn't promise anything other than the elimination of sharing with your brothers. Now, even if I wanted to help you gain more power, it's going to be much harder than it was before."
Brenden scoffed as his eyes rolled in the back of his head. "Well, thanks to you, it's our only option."
"Is it? You wolves really have a one-track mind. Don't you worry, I have a backup plan."
"Then make it quick. I'm going to take that pack out from under my brothers one way or another."
I sighed heavily and took a seat. "I will...but remember, I also need you to think bigger."
"Bigger?"
"Of course. Total Supernatural Domination."
