POV Mason
She was so lifeless as her body nestled into the sterile white sheets. “Still nothing?” Lucas asked as he walked into the room, arms full of food the three of us won’t even bother to touch. As per usual. I’m starting to think he does it because our parents are getting updates through the nurses. After the first day, we didn’t eat a bite of food and mom forced us to drink some soup that night. We…wanted to be alone. Having her here just made us feel like we weren’t paying enough attention to our mate. That…that can’t happen.
Jackson stood to his feet silently and walked towards the door. Lucas held out his hand to stop him and the growl that came from Jackson raddled the room. “Get out of my way brother.”
“No. The guards have already subdued him. I know where you are going. We will deal with him after our mate wakes up. How many times do I have to tell you this?” Lucas warned. He was the oldest so…he tends to have the final say. However, I know that today isn’t the day. Every day we watched her being strapped to wires while her only confirmation of life was the beeping of her heart on some machine in the corner. I don’t know how much longer I can handle this, let alone Jackson. I might have a hot head in my wolf form, but Jackson…he was worse in his human form.
“What?! She won’t even wake up because of him! I’ll kill him! You are being too soft. You and dad. How could he know about Ophelia and what he has done to her and still ignore everything that is going on?!” Jackson added.
“You are thinking with your wolf, not with reality. If we kill him now, we might never see her wake up again.” I said, finally inserting myself into the conversation. “She’s already been rejected twice. The death of a mate before she has the chance to accept the rejection will kill her. Not to mention, there has never been a multiple union where one of the members isn’t interested in fighting for it.” We are flying blind here. There is nothing smart about thinking rashly.
“It’s been four days Mason! I’m not going to just stand by and wait. I need vengeance for her!” Jackson pleaded. Here we go with this old song and dance again.
“Listen, Jackson! We all want justice. What our brother did was cruel and uncalled for. We never decided to reject her, and he made that choice on his own. The relief I felt when we didn’t feel the pain of the rejection was enough to tell me that we can make this work, but we need our mate to decide what to do next. We have to give this time.”
“Make this work.” His hands rested on his hips and his jaw clenched. He was not going to let this go. “She shouldn’t have to decide.” Jackson pressed again as Lucas dropped the food on the plastic table that is supposed to be used for the patients. “What about her family, huh? When I told them what happened….” I may have been out of it when they came in but I knew. Her parents were furious.
“The crazy part is, he’s not her actual father. They took her in, but they are not her blood. And yet…the level of protection they’ve show for her rivals even our mother. Why…why can’t we have the same thing?” I said, rubbing my face.
“Which means we actually wanted her. We weren’t stuck with her. We are her real family. That… that makes this hurt all the more.” All three of us stood tall as Sal and Holly walked into the room with Jeremy sluggishly moving behind them. Sal’s words rang throughout the room and we made sure to listen.
“That…that’s not what we meant at all, it’s just –” I tried and epically failed at covering up my words while Sal chuckled.
“It’s fine to be possessive over your mate. Trust me. I get it. It seems like you three were talking about what I have been dreading since your brother came to uh…introduce himself.” He added.
Relaxing a little, Lucas nodded, and Jackson’s eyes flashed between his own and his wolf’s. “We need to end this before she gets hurt again. I will not watch my mate get hurt again!” Jackson said. As I thought, he’s not going to let this go.
“Is that what you agreed on before this happened to her in the first place?!” Jeremy snapped. I know he is just trying to get some resolution for his sister, but this was not the time.
“Jeremy!” His mother growled. Leave it to her to expertly read the room.
He ducked his head and winced. “S-Sorry mother.” He mumbled under his breath.
“We know this wasn’t your fault. We do. It’s just that, we are struggling with letting her get more involved with any of you.” Sal said hesitantly. “Regardless of what I said when she was admitted here.”
“You don’t get to make that choice!” Jackson shouted.
“And you do?! Your brother is the reason she’s in here in the first place. You share the same soul. You cannot have her without him.” Jeremy snapped.
I looked down towards our mate and my wolf whimpered as Jackson and Jeremy continued to argue. “Please wake up my little spitfire. I’ve never wanted to hear what you have to say so badly in all my days. Not to mention…Jackson might actually get punched by your dad if you don’t stop him.” I purred into her link. Hoping I’d hear something in return.
“I’m…I’m happy to hear it.” My eyes grew as her voice groggily came through the link.
“O…Ophelia?” I asked as if I didn’t just hear her.
“It’s me alright. S-Sorry but what is going on?” She asked as her eyes stayed closed.
“As I said, Jackson is going to bat for you. Apparently, your new family thinks we are not worthy of you. Do…do you feel the same?” I need to hear it from her. Until then I will never give up. The time we spent in the library was more than enough to remind me that she wants this more than she is letting on. I hope Brenden’s rash decisions won’t change her mind on this.
“I do not feel that way at all. At least not anymore. I…I want to try this.”
“Thank the goddess! What about um…?”
Finally, her eyes opened and she smiled up at me. “We aren’t going to worry about him.” She took a deep breath, and I felt the link open between the five of us. “I, Ophelia Hawthorne, omega of the Silver Dawn Pack, accept your rejection and sever the bond as Brenden Silver’s mate for now and forever.”
Jackson and Lucas’s eyes shot towards Ophelia and I. I never saw them move so fast, but they were pressed up against the other side of her bed, staring down at her with shock while the gap in our bond finally sealed shut. Shocking all three of us. “You felt that right?” Lucas said aloud.
“I did. She accepted the rejection and now…now I feel complete again? How is this possible?” Jackson added with a grin.
“Then what happened to Brenden?” I asked.
“Who cares?! My sister is awake and all you can think about is your brother?! See? I was right!” Jeremy shouted.
All three of us turned to glare at Jeremy. “Now isn’t the time Jeremy!” Sal snapped before his eyes glazed over. Ophelia tightened her grip on my hand and I realized they were talking to each other. I held my breath and waited for the two of them to finish before looking back at my brothers. “Alright. We will leave you all to chat. Ophelia…please let us know when we can visit. I’m…so happy you are alright.” He said before bowing to us and pulling his son from the room.
“What was that all about?” I asked her with a raised brow.
“I told them what I wanted and he respected it. I also accepted Brenden’s decision. I will not keep what doesn’t belong to me. I don’t want someone else’s leftovers either.” She grumbled through the link and my brothers and I chuckled at her quip. It was nice to hear again.
“Do you want some water princess?” Jackson asked.
She nodded with a big smile on her face and he raced to the other side of the room to grab the pitcher. “How long have I been asleep?” She asked.
Jackson held a glass to her lips and she took small sips while he helped her hold the cup. “Four very long days. Trust me. I was about to explode!” Jackson responded.
“Yeah, and it was my job to prevent that from happening.” Lucas added with a chuckle. Jackson placed the cup on the small stool next to her bed and turned back around to stare at our mate.
Her eyes wandered over each of us before it landed on the pile of food off in the corner. “Aren’t you going to eat?” She asked.
I sighed heavily and shook my head. “We haven’t been able to get much food down since all of this happened. We can try though.”
“Please do. I don’t want you to be sick.”
“Ha! Coming from the one stuck in the hospital room? Cute.” Lucas hummed before grabbing a small sweet roll for each of us.
The three of us continued to eat as we looked over our mate in silence. “So….” She whispered and we all turned to her.
“What is it sweetie?” Jackson asked.
She wrapped her hands around the blanket covering her legs and took a deep breath. “So what happens now? I re-rejected your brother.”
“Did you feel anything after that?” Lucas asked.
She nodded quickly. “I felt relief and…something warm.”
“That sounds about right. It felt like the void was completely removed once you accepted his proposal. Just remember that is the last time you will ever hear those words. I will protect you to the end of my days.” Jackson confirmed.
“No arguments here.” Lucas agreed.
She slowly turned to look at me and I gulped down the last of my roll. “And you, Mason?” She asked worriedly.
“Ha! You don’t have to worry about me my little spitfire. I’m here for the long run.”
