Chapter 24- Meeting Jack

1870 Words
Val POV Last night was horrific. I cannot believe that such a perfect night was ruined by my father’s goons. I feared that I would be found by either my father or Alpha Mark when I returned to Norfolk but never so fast. I was so glad though that our pack warriors were able to reach us quickly and dispatch of my father’s men as quickly as they did. Johnny spent most of last night consoling me and just allowing me to cry. I feel so bad for him, I cannot believe that has me and my mess as a mate, but he has never once told me that he resents me for my baggage. Instead he stands beside me and fights for me. We finally fell asleep late last night, which means that now that I have to get up for work I am shattered. I wake up to my alarm blearing and Johnny quietly cursing it under his breath, making me chuckle. I roll over and turn the alarm of, relishing in two seconds of comfort before I get up and decide to start my day. I head into the bathroom where I do my business and have a nice hot shower and hair wash, trying to wash away all of the memories and feelings from last night’s attack. Once I have showered and dressed, I see that Johnny is still asleep so I head down to the kitchen and start to make breakfast. I decide to do a full English breakfast, egg, bacon, beans, waffles, black pudding, sausages, hash browns and I even add onions. I love onions, and this is the only way I get to have them in the mornings. Just as I am dishing up the food, I hear the floor creak indicating that Johnny is getting up and has stepped on his creaky floorboard by his side of the bed. I smile and continue to put the plates on the table and then I make fresh coffee for us. “Babe? Babe where are you?” I hear Johnny frantically calling. “Kitchen honey.” I shout back. Within a few seconds Johnny comes running into the kitchen, his hair disheveled and his shirt not completely buttoned like it normally is. I like this look. “What are you doing babe? I said that I was to be with you today.” “I know, I thought I would make us breakfast and coffee ready for the day. Are you sure you can be gone today? I am only going to the courthouse.” I say. “Babe, you promised you wouldn’t fight me on this.” Johnny starts to whine. “I am not, I am just saying you can’t come into court with me and I am only going to be at the courthouse today.” “I know, but I can stay close to the courthouse just encase anything happens.” Johnny counters. I nod my head agreeing. We quickly eat our breakfast and head out into town and to the courthouse. I exit the car with Johnny, he then gives me and hug and a kiss. “Give them hell babe.” He says before slightly pushing me towards the courthouse. I leave Johnny at the entrance and make my way into the courthouse, this time I know where I am going so I head straight up the stairs and to the same clerk as yesterday. “Good morning, Johnson case,” I say to him, smiling. “Room 3.” I the only response I get. I nod my head and walk along the corridor to room 3. I open the door and I am pushed back out of the room as I enter by two policemen. “Excuse you!” I shout at them. “You are not permitted to be in here with the accused.” One of them says to me. “I am legally allowed to speak to my client. Who are you to prevent me?” I demand. They may be the police but that does not count for anything here regarding my client. “We have been told no one is to see him.” One of the men tell me, crossing his arms and trying to look menacingly at me. It doesn’t work. “So you’re going to prevent me from speaking to my client? Really?” I challenge. “Yes. What are you going to do about it?” Wrong thing to say buddy. “I am going to go to the judge and have a junction taken out against the two of you for interfering with an ongoing court case, preventing my client from having legal representation, intimidation and threatening behavior. And anything else I find out, trust me bucko, you don’t want me tearing you a part.” The fire in my eyes blazing. I love being challenged. I watch as the two policemen look at each other. “Your move men.” I say, hand on my hip. Often in scenarios like this confidence is key. “You have won today girl, but not tomorrow.” They say, moving out of the way for me. “By the way, I am a woman. Hence why the two of you couldn’t handle me boys.” I say over my shoulder while heading into the room. I close the door behind me. I look around the room and see a table, two chairs opposite each other and cameras in every corner. I smirk, so it’s one of those places. “Hello Miss, I am Jack Johnson.” Jack jumps up and holds his hand out for me to shake. “Hello Mr. Johnson, I am your defense solicitor Valkyrie Cross but you can call me Val.” I say, breaking the ice while shaking Jacks hand. “Are you as good as they say?” “I like to think so. I have already made a start on your case, so let’s go through a few questions and then go from there.” I say, Jack nods his head in agreement. “Do you know what you are accused of?” “Yes, murdering a woman.” “Are you capable of such a thing?” “I don’t think so, I mean you never know but I don’t think I ever could. I cry when I watch Bambi for Goddess sake.” I smile. “Everyone cries at that.” “Yeah.” Jack laughs. “And who have you supposedly killed?” “The fiancé of some Mark guy, but I swear Val I never met him nor her.” Jack says to me, pleading with me to believe him. Jack and I speak for an hour or so about the case against him. That fact that he body has not been found, theres no photographic evidence of the victim ever being alive and that Jack has an alibi leads me to believe that the case is really a trumped up case against Jack for some reason. I decide that I need to do some more digging into the prosecutions main witness ‘Mark’. I have a feeling that he might be the man that my father sold me to a few years ago, but I am hoping that is not the case. But if it is, then what has Jack done to anger Mark? I decide that I have had enough of this place and this case. Realistically this case should never have gotten to court, and the judge should have thrown it out. But because Jack did not have an alibi, and the prosecution pushed so hard for the charges to be taken to court, we are now all in this ridiculous situation. I leave room 3 and head up another flight of stairs to the judges offices. I walk along the corridor until I see a plaque with the name I am looking for. “Excuse me, please may I see Judge Rhodes?” I ask the receptionist. She looks me up and down and gives me a disgusted look. I instantly take a disliking to her. “No.” “I see. Well then, excuse me.” I say as I walk past her desk and straight to the office door. “You cannot go in there miss, he is in a meeting.” The receptionist shouts at me, jumping up from her desk a little too late. “Not for long.” I walk straight into the judges office. I know that I should knock but to be honest this case is ridiculous and he cannot be a good judge if he does not see that. “I think you should drop the case against my client.” I say, getting the judge and the prosecutors attention. “What do you mean?” Asks the judge. “Well the prosecution has no case against my client.” “We do your honor. We have a witness claiming that they saw the victim with the accused, along with other eyewitness evidence and….” “And that’s all your case is. All of your evidence is circumstantial, and my client has an alibi for the supposed crime. I cannot find any evidence that the victim even existed.” I counter. “Just because theres no body?” Asks the prosecutor. “No, because there is no trace of her ever existing in any database anywhere. I have contacted the FBI, Interpol and all of the police." “In such a short time?” Asks the judge in surprise. “Of course, I am well worth the money I charge. I am not a top defense solicitor for no reason.” I say, shocking the room. “Anyway your honor, I move to have the motion of the case dismissed again my client due to lack of evidence and the victim not existing.” I say. The judge nods. “I will consider your motion.” “But your honor….” Argues the prosecutor. “No, that is my judgement. I will consider and will decide by the end of the week.” I nod and turn to leave the office. I leave the prosecutions office after giving them the evidence of Jacks alibi at the time of the alleged crime. I also think that I have successfully made the claim that the case should be thrown out and the accuser be charged with wasting police time as there is no proof of a victim. I don’t mean no body even though there is no body, what I mean is that the prosecution cannot produce any evidence to show the missing woman ever existed before the police were called. I am walking down the hallway completely in my own world, thinking of my next move if the prosecution doesn’t throw out the case. I am not paying attention to where I am going and I end up walking into some one, I feel sparks so I think that it is Johnny until I look up and see a face I haven’t seen for a while. I take a sharp breath as the world stops moving.
