Xander POV
I head down the stairs after breakfast all suited and booted. Today I and my beta David are heading down to the courthouse to support Jack.
Jack has been a member of my pack all of his life. He is only in his early 20s but he has proven to be an exceptional scholar. He reads all of the time and loves to learn and teach. So he often helps out in the pack school while obtaining a teaching qualification. All of the pups and elders love him, and his opinion is often listened to.
When he was arrested and charged with the k********g and murder of Alpha Mark’s unknown mate, it raised a lot of eyebrows within the pack. The only mate we knew about was Marks’ claim over Val, so was Val dead or had Mark been lying?
The elders did some digging and it turned out that Mark may have been lying about him having a mate as they could find no evidence regarding a mate ever being presented to the pack or Mark ever finding one. It was then that I had decided to step in and ordered my legal team to protect Jack.
The case against Jack is serious. If he is found guilty then he would be sent to prison for life and possibly even executed under werewolf law. After being taken to prison, if it can be proven that his victim was also a wolf then he will be tried under wolf law.
My legal team take pride in what they do and they are very skilled. However, at every turn the judge would dismiss their arguments and bury Jack in more legal tape and jargon. It started to look like Jack would never be free.
I went to our legal team to see if they could do anything but they couldn’t. Then one of them recommended a defense solicitor who has never lost a case, no matter how open and shut the case is. I have no idea who this defense solicitor is, but considering he is costing a lot of money, I really hope he knows what he is doing. My legal team are swearing by him, so I know he must be good and at the moment he is Jacks’ only hope of ever being a free man again.
I am currently in my office thinking over my plans for today. I plan to go into town and see if I can at least see Jack so that he knows we are standing behind him.
I pick up a piece of paper from my desk and start to read it.
I read the report that Luke gave to me, saying that Val had gone into the courthouse which peaked my curiosity. When I went there I could smell her but she had already left. I asked around but no one remembered her. I really want to know what she was doing there, but no one knew and I could not think of a single reason as to why she would be there unless she was visiting someone or was herself in trouble.
A while after reading the report and getting on top of the other reports and documents, David comes into my office.
“Alpha, the car is outside ready to go. Come one, the court house should be open soon.” David says, practically pulling me out of my chair and out of the door.
“Ok, ok. Hold your horses, let me grab my jacket.”
David and I make it outside, with the addition of my jacket, and get into the car.
“To the courthouse please.” I say to the driver, who nods and pulls off and heads out of the pack house grounds.
David and I pull up outside of the court house and we quickly exit my car. We stand there on the curb while the driver pulls off when I notice something on the top of the courthouse steps. Standing there is Val and a man, they look awfully close and comfortable with each other, what with his arm around her and the way they are leaning into each other while talking.
I watch in shock as Val hugs and kisses a man and then walks off into the courthouse, who the hell is he? I mind link David.
No idea, I will ask around. Could he be..???
Who?
Well, there is news that a new pack has arrived in town and that Val has come with them.
Yeah. So?
Could he be a member of that pack?
Possibly.
Even after Val walks into the courthouse, the man stays outside looking like he does not plan to go anywhere. David and I decide to go over to the café over the road and keep an eye on the man, it seems odd that after parting from Val he waits around outside.
David and I have been sitting at the table with a cup of coffee for the past two and a bit hours, but what surprises me is that the man has not moved either. A few other man have joined him from time to time and then left again, but he has remained. Whatever is going on is curious, it seems more like he is waiting for Val for some reason rather than stalking her- which has been crossing my mind for the past few hours.
I turn to David to talk to him about the man but I notice that he is gone from his seat.
I look around, trying to find David but then I find him walking up to the man.
“Hello.” David says to the man. The wonderful thing about werewolf hearing is that even though there is glass and a road separating me and David, I can still hear what is being said.
“Hello? Do I know you?” The man asks David.
“No but I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time? Just someone I know wants to speak to you.”
The man looks at David wearily but nods his head.
Alpha, you might want to come. David mind links me.
Why?
I think I have found the alpha of the new pack.
Oh, who?
You’re looking at him.
I stand there for a few seconds surprised, this man is an alpha? I know he looks strong but he also looks and smells human to me.
Then I face palm myself. Of course he would if he just drove and hugged Val, her scent would be strong and it would linger on him for a few hours. How could I be so stupid?
“Hello sir, my name is Xander.” I say while walking up the steps towards David.
“Xander, as in Alpha Xander?” The man asks me.
“Yes, one and the same. Who are you?” I ask.
“I am Alpha Johnny.” Johnny says while extending his hand.
“Alpha Johnny. It is so lovely to meet you, I have heard wonderful things about you and your pack. But why are you in Norfolk?”
“My mate and Luna has a case here she needed to come here for.” Johnny explains to me.
“Oh, what is she charged with if you don’t mind me asking?” I know that seems rather forward but if I have any dealings with Alpha Johnny in the future then I need to make sure that the crime the Luna has committed is not serious or my reputation will also be ruined.
“Oh no, my Luna has not committed a crime. She is the defense solicitor for someone here.” Johnny explains.
“Who?” David is quick to ask.
“Sorry but even I don’t know that. She keeps everything close to her chest.”
You don’t think it’s Jacks’ solicitor, do you? David asks me.
I don’t know.
You don’t think the solicitor and Luna is….. David is interrupted by a door slamming open and all I can hear is the sound of heels clacking on the floor before I feel someone falling into me.
I look down as I feel someone barrel into me, grabbing them before they could fall down. I am surprised when I feel sparks from where I am touching their arm and then I look at their face and see the eyes I have been missing for so long. She is home and she is just as beautiful as the first day I laid eyes on her.
