Luke POV
I have been tasked by my alpha to track and follow Val, who is Xanders' mate, and our Luna. The whole pack is in support of Xanders’ decision to wait for Val to return as Xander always believed that she would, and now here she is back.
I know Val has a brother in Alpha Marks’ pack and that he helped her escape. Watching Val sacrifice herself that day for all of us shocked us. There was this human who had no ties or loyalty to any of us and yet she still sacrificed herself for us.
Alpha Mark has been attacking our territory recently, he started two years ago when Val disappeared but stopped. Then three weeks ago he started again, the attacks are being done by rogues but those that we have captured keep telling us the same story. They are grabbed when they pass by Alpha Marks’ territory and then either tortured or their families threatened if they do not attack our packs.
We have gotten stronger due to the attacks, which has annoyed Alpha Mark all the more. This is obvious as he keeps making demands to see Alpha Xander and fight for leadership of the pack. Alpha Xander will not even entertain the idea.
When Xander came back from picking up his sister today, he was happy and ad a spring in his step again which has not been seen since Val left. I leave the pack grounds quickly and go straight to my source in the local council, if Val has come back even temporarily then they would be able to discover where she was residing.
I quickly get the information and head over, but I notice that a barrier is in place, meaning that a pack has taken up residence here. I am guessing that Val and her pack have relocated from Medway to the no man’s land, meaning that they can reside here without trespassing or needing another packs permission. A smart move, guessing they want to keep their relocation to here quiet.
I call Xander and explain that a new pack has come to town, buying the no man’s land territory. I then head to a near hotel and plan my next move, I know that Val will not leave the pack lands tonight.
The Next day
I quickly locate Val, she is coming out of Wolfy Café. If the name doesn’t give it away, it is one of the many shops that we wolves run. In this town the shops are a mix of supernatural and human. I can see Val taking a sip from a hot drink cup while nibbling on a baguette, I sniff, a bacon baguette from the smell of it.
Val carries o walking into town while enjoying her breakfast, stopping only to dispose of the rubbish. The she walks into a bookstore where she remains for a while. I start thinking about going in when the door opens.
I watch as Val leaves the bookshop and then head into town. I stay a few feet away from her, making sure not to draw attention to myself, blending in with the surroundings again. I am surprised when Val suddenly stops and looks up, she then walks up the steps and into the local court house.
Why is she going in there?
I walk into the café opposite the courthouse, I am curious as to why Val went there but I didn’t want to alert her to my following her. So I grab myself and cake and cup of tea, taking my ticket and sitting at a table near the window, where I can keep an eye on the courthouse entrance.
I grab my laptop out of my bag and decide to do some searching online about Val.
After a few minutes I have found something very interesting. The information I am currently looking at surprises me. Here I was thinking that Val was innocent and quiet but she had made quite the name for herself.
Glaring at me from the laptop screen is a headline from the Medway News newspaper dated just over a year ago, it talks about Val who was defending a young drug dealer in a r**e of a minor case. Val had gone and done her own research into the case and then fought tooth and nail to get the charges dropped. When it looked like the case was over, Val produced another witness who dispelled the case entirely and the evidence she presented laid the claims right back at the rival gangs boss’ feet.
From then on Val has had high profile cases, including the one that has brought her back to Norfolk.
I pick up the phone and call Xander.
“Hi Luke, how is it going?” Xander answers on the first ring.
“Hi Xander, I followed Val this morning and she went into a café then a bookstore then made some phone calls while heading to the courthouse.”
“Courthouse? What is she doing there?” Xander asks, worry clearly evidence in his voice.
“Slow down Romeo, she is on a case. Turns out she is a defense solicitor, and one hell of a good one at that. Listen to this.” I then read out the newspaper about her first case, and then the subsequent headlines about Val.
Xander whistles down the phone. “She has certainly made waves, hasn’t she? No wonder she is back in town.”
“You don’t think this has anything to do with Jacks’ case, do you?” I ask, wondering out loud.
“Possibly, I don’t see how but it is possible. But at least know we know what she has been up to for the last few years.”
“Yeah, and she is Luna to the Thunder Dragons Pack.” I say the last bit slowly and quietly, I know that this is going to hurt Xander as much as it has hurt me to read about her being mated and marked to another Alpha.
“I know.”
“How?”
“I felt it.”
“WHAT?!” I shout, drawing everyone’s attention to me. I quickly mouth an apology before turning back to the phone conversation.
“Just over a week ago I think it was, I felt it. But it didn’t hurt, I felt complete for some reason and my wolf has been a lot calmer since.”
I sit there thinking, “You don’t think, do you?” I hint.
“Maybe, I don’t know. Only time will tell I guess.”
“Will you meet her?”
“I hope so, but at the moment I think I will keep a distance until we know more about what is going on. I don’t want to run the risk of leading Alpha Mark to her.”
“Is he still sniffing around?”
“Yes, even had a letter from him again this morning.”
“What was this one about?”
“The same, wants to fight me and whether I know anything about Vals’ whereabouts.”
“Do you think he will stop?”
“I doubt it. He is really after Val for some reason. So at the moment it might pay to keep a bit of a distance for a few days, then maybe approach her.”
“Makes sense.”
“I need you back here for a meeting.”
“What meeting? I didn’t think we had anymore this week.”
“We didn’t but the elder wants to talk to us and Gamma Peter.”
I sigh, yay. This means that we are going to be spending hours just listening to the elders rant and rave at us. “Ok, I’ll head back now”
“See you in a bit. Maybe get a warrior to keep an eye on Val while you’re indisposed.” Xander says before hanging up.
I quickly mind link Abbie, our best female warrior and extremely stealthy. She answers immediately, saying that she is already tailing Val. I should have guessed that Abbie would already be on it.
I get up, leave the money for the tea and cake and then head back to the pack for the meeting.
