Chapter 13- Second Chance

(Alpha Johnnys’ POV)

Two years ago I went to a ball in Alpha Marks’ territory and my life changed forever that evening. I still cannot get the image my mate out of my head, I do not even know her name. I tried to help her but I just couldn’t find any safe way to do so, then just as me and my pack were going to go to war for her we got news that she had escaped from Mark. The news of the runaway Luna spread like wildfire in the wolf community until those at the ball, and who had left Alpha Marks’ pack, started to talk about how they saw Alpha Mark and other higher ranks treat her. After that business deals and treaties with Alpha Mark ceased almost instantly and his pack took a big hit. Many of his pack members left him and joined other packs when they discovered what he had done.

It was then that the biggest surprise came about, Alpha Mark had only wanted Val because of the power he perceived her to have, because she could not be commanded. Clearly Alpha Mark had not common sense as a human cannot be commanded by an alpha as there is no wolf within them to command, but at least I managed to learn her name.

About a year later I got a call from an unknown number claiming to be Vals’ brother Alex, he claimed that his sister was in my territory and he feared that she had tried to kill herself. At first I dismissed him until the third call when he screamed her name as pain overtook him, I then began to wonder whether his Val is the Val that was taken by Alpha Mark and my true mate? I then waited until Alex could talk again before getting a description of her a rough idea of her whereabouts, Alex told me that he thought Val had a hidden home somewhere near Chatham. After a bit of digging I found a bungalow registered in her name in Rochester. I quickly drove to Rochester with a few of my trackers, hunters and warriors as well as my beta Fred to find her. When we got to her home we found that she had disappeared but had left a note:

“Dear Alpha Mark,

By the time you read this I will be dead. I have no idea why you have pursued me so relentlessly, I have tried everything to put what you did behind me. I never told a sole. Yet you still seem to want me. Well this time I can do something about it, last time I was weak and stupid but now I will stop you from hurting me again. Come and meet me in the woods over the road, follow my scent, trust me you will not miss it. But you won’t like what you find.

Val"

What the hell is this? My wolf Xavier shouts at me, starting to panic as a feeling of dread washed over the both of us. We ran outside and picked up her scent quickly in the woods opposite just like she said, when we all followed her scent we found her in a pool of blood unconscious. It was clear to all of us what she had done to herself. I quickly dropped to my knees and tore my shirt and wrapped strips of around her wrists to stop the bleeding. Thank fully she was still bleeding. Once her wrists were covered up I picked her up and we all ran back to our cars and took her to the hospitals.

At first I thought she was stupid to do what she did but when she came to and as time went on and we got closer she told me everything that she had been through, I realized that the day she tried to kill herself she was not being stupid but rather it was her last ditch effort to protect herself. After I found out and informed the pack, we all decided to protect her no matter what. I was delighted and Xavier was over the moon and thanking the moon goddess every day for bringing his mate back to him. Neither of us could believe that our mate had been in our territory for a year before we found her.

I cannot believe I got a second chance at finding my mate and this time being able to keep her safe and with me. At first we fought a bit as I wanted her to live with me but Val explained that because of her past she cannot deal with being in a pack house yet. I wouldn’t relent at first but then a few of Vals’ friends in the pack came up to me and explained that it was not because of me but because of the scars left from her past. After that I started to understand, and as Val opened up to me I was able to get a deeper understanding of what Val wants and needs.

We are nearing our first year anniversary of dating. Xavier wanted to mate and mark our mate instantly but I knew that for Val we would need to court the human way, which thankfully Xavier and the pack supported, even though it means that they do not have their Luna there. The pack are happy to have the future Luna with them where they can protect her but they know that it will be a while before she will officially be Luna, even if Val does Luna duties unknowingly which makes everyone in the pack feel proud.

Fred is sitting opposite me on the other side of my desk in a green leather arm chair, both of us are at a loss about what to do tomorrow for my first year anniversary with Val. I have ordered some flowers, purple and black roses which are her favourite. I am thinking a BBQ for the whole pack but Fred says I should do something more private.

“How about this? A lovely picnic in the park for lunch and a nice leisurely walk in the forest and then back here for a pack BBQ? I know Val loves spending time here and doing things to be part of the pack.” I suggest.

“That could work Alpha, you might be tired at the end of the day but I think that is a lovely idea. Gives the pack something to do as well and they can also share in the celebrations of their Alpha and future Luna.” Fred replies with a wide grin spreading across his face. Before I can say anything else he gets up and leaves, obviously going to his mate to share the plan and get her to help him start preparing. I just hope Val enjoys the surprises. She deserves it.

I remember when I first told the pack about her and how curious they were, to hear what she had gone through which was horrific enough for anyone but for a human to give another werewolf a chance after going through that hell truly showed what Val is made of and made the pack welcome her all the more. All of them loved her the minute they met her, all the pups are always around her when she is here, staying with her and treating her like their favorite auntie- I guess she is I chuckle to myself. Next week we are heading to Norfolk, where her nightmare began, and I have already put safety measures into place that Val is unaware of. Val already knows about the piece of no-man’s land that I have now staked claim too and making into me territory in Norfolk, but I have also placed some warriors into the local population that are perfectly placed to keep an eye on Val at all times. I have contemplated alerting Alpha Xander as he is one of my allies but then it would be too petty as Val is my responsibility.

I also have a necklace that I am going to give to Val tomorrow, it is both a present but also a safety measure as it enables me to be able to locate Val when she is in trouble if her heart or mind calls out to me or I use a location spell on her. I asked my cousins’ husband for this favour as he is a powerful warlock who helps me without demanding anything in return. I know I am probably going overkill in the protection department for Val and if she finds out she will be mad that I have inconvenienced so many pack members as she says but they all volunteered for these roles and her safety is paramount to everyone. Also, no one in the pack was happy about Val returning to Norfolk without any protection. As Alpha it is my duty to protect my pack and mate and my pack have taken it upon themselves to protect my mate also.
