Get Some Rest

1038 Words
{Maisie’s POV} “Try to get some more rest Angelo, they’ll be ready for the other scans soon..” I stood, walking out of the room, making it to the hallway before I fell slightly against the wall. “No.. not now..” I whimpered. Barely able to hold myself up, I didn’t even notice Enzo walk up beside me. “Maisie.. are you okay?” He asked, walking in front of me. I was leaned on my side against the wall, not able to hold myself up. “Get Jess..” I whimpered, trying hard to hold myself up. He ran off quickly, soon coming back with Jess, she helped me get into a room and Enzo followed in with us. “Maisie.. are you okay, what’s going on?” He asked, but before I could process anything, I felt myself falling, Jess caught me, lying me on my side on the floor. “Maisie has low blood sugar..” Jess answered, grabbing and jabbing me with my glucagon injection pen. When I woke up Enzo and Jess were both sitting on the floor in front of me. I sat up, a little too quickly, feeling dizzy I gripped my head. “Take it easy Maisie!” Jess said, sliding next to me. “I-I’m fine.. I need to check on..” Jess cut me off. “Angelo is fine, he’s sleeping soundly in the next room over. You need to be more careful Maisie, you’re supposed to keep your sugar up! Now, what happened?” She asked. I shook my head, “I had just eaten breakfast a while before, and it was full of sugar...” I paused looking over to Enzo. “Thank you.. if it weren’t for you, I might have hit the floor..” I said, smiling at him softly. “Really Jess, I’m fine.. just a bit light headed, but I’ll drink some fluids and rest.” I said, carefully standing up. I walked out of the room carefully, Enzo and Jess not far behind me. I went to my office and grabbed a drink with extra electrolytes and drank down some of it. I walked back out, coming face to face with Enzo. “Are you sure you’re okay?” He asked, offering me his arm. I took it, allowing him to walk me back towards Angelo’s room. “I’m okay, really, usually I can feel when my blood sugar is low, but it just felt like it hit me all of a sudden.” I smiled up at him. “Really though, I am fine..” we made it back to Angelo’s room, finding him asleep in his bed. “He must be exhausted..” I said softly. “He looks like he is, doesn’t he?” He replied, both of us staring at Angelo’s sleeping form. “It must be exhausting.. being so strong for everyone else.. while also being so weak for those that need him..” I said, leaning in the doorway, watching over him. “What do you mean?” Enzo asked, crossing his arms and looking down at me. I paused, thinking for a moment. “I only meant, the way he softens his exterior for his family.. especially Anna and Aurelio.. then he puts back on this stone cold facade. It must be exhausting, making people think that he’s so cold, when in truth, he’s a big softie, who cooks and bakes for his family, while wearing a pink apron.” I giggled softly. Enzo stared at me, fascination spread across his face. “And what do you think about my son?” “Me?” I asked, turning up to face him, I felt my face beginning to get red. “I think that he’s very kind.. and though he’s stubborn, if he knows that you’re serious, he’ll listen, even if he doesn’t want to. He smiles.. the most genuine smile.. one that you know that he means every time you see it..” I paused, looking over to Enzo. “You raised a very kind, generous, and strong son..” I said. “You think all of that? Even though you don’t know everything about him?” He asked, watching for a reaction. I looked down, fiddling with my hands. “To be fair.. you all don’t know everything about me either.. but you all allowed me into your home, let me help prepare breakfast, and clean up, let me treat your sons injuries.” I sighed. “You’re a remarkable woman, you know that?” He asked, looking back to his son. I shook my head, turning back towards the hallway. “I’m not.. Mr. LaRoux.. I’m not even a good person..” I said, my voice soft, but cold. “I don’t deserve any praise.. so please, don’t bother with it..” I walked away, making my way back to my office, sitting down at my desk. I took in a deep breath before letting it out slowly. It did nothing to calm me, so I grabbed my mug, throwing it across the room and shattering it against the wall. I can’t stand feeling this way, so trapped, so afraid. I crawled under my desk, lying my back against the wall and pulling my knees to my chest. I didn’t want to feel like this anymore.. constantly looking over my shoulder, afraid of my own shadow. No matter how many times I tried to wash away the pain from my past, I couldn’t, nothing rid me of this anxiety. “Maisie?” I heard a voice call, I didn’t move, I didn’t make a sound, I just stayed still under my desk. “Maisie, where did you go?” It was Margo, when did she get here? “Dad told me what you said.. he was worried about you, I just got here to check on Angelo, and he asked me to come talk to you..” she said, walking into my office. She looked around, finally noticing my legs under the desk. “Maisie?” She asked, crouching down in front of me. “What are you doing under there?” She sat down, moving closer to me.
