Birthday
{Maisie’s POV}
I sighed as I looked in the mirror, the dress that my best friend Heather had gotten me for my birthday was cute, but a little too revealing for me. Normally I’m in oversized shirts, and sweatpants, or my work scrubs, this was so far out of my comfort zone. The dress was short, coming down to my mid thigh, with one side split up to my waist. It was sage green, and had a deep v neckline, and was backless, with golden chains going criss cross down my back. “T-This isn’t what I was expecting when you said you found a dress that suits me..” I whimpered, staring at my reflection. She had already done my makeup, and helped me fix my hair, I nearly didn’t recognize myself. I keep my hair straight, as it’s usually kinky curls are difficult to manage. Tonight she curled my hair with a larger curling iron, making loose curls that flowed around me. My ginger colored hair hung down my back, nearly to my butt when it was curly like this. My makeup was done in light nude colors, with a Smokey eye, and a nude lipstick. “I feel.. weird..” I said, opening the door and looking at her.
She was in a short bright pink dress, it was also backless, and the front was nearly see through. Her pale blonde hair fell to her mid back, and laid in beach waves. Her eyes were pink and Smokey, while her lips were nude colored. “Come on, you look amazing!” She smiled. She was tall, tanned, and beautiful as always, her pale blue eyes sparkling as she stared at me. She’s 5’10 without heels, but with them on she stands at 6’2. My short stature next to hers always made me chuckle.
I stopped growing at 5’2, and I can barely walk in heels. I had a few pair, but couldn’t wear anything more than two inch heels without tripping over my own feet. “Are you sure this is okay? I feel really exposed..” I said, looking down. My body was very curvy, I’ve always had large breasts, and even a pretty big butt, my thick thighs didn’t help anything. My waist was small though, so I always thought I looked disproportionate. My curves were shown off a little too much in this dress, which drove up my anxiety.
“Relax Maisie, you look amazing! I told you that I’m taking you out for your birthday, and that’s what I’m doing! You need to chill, you haven’t since you got here! I’m so glad that you moved in with me, and honestly it was about time that you got away from Robert!” She said offhanded as she walked away from me.
I cringed at the mention of his name, Heather and I came from the same home town. A small piece of Country Heaven, is what everyone used to call it. Heather left as soon as she turned 18, moving away and going to college here, and I stayed behind. I married a man that I met while working the diner. He was wonderful when we first met, he was a businessman, he moved to town to run an up and coming company. After we got married, he changed, he became impossible to please, always angry with me. He was violent, and aggressive.. the longer I stayed the worse it got. I left after the most traumatic night of my life, I filed for divorce, and ran. I haven’t looked back since, not until the mention of that name.
“Oh honey I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking!” Heather said, running to my side and pulling me into a hug. “Alright, no more talk about past mistakes, and horrendous men! Tonight, it’s just me, you, and the most luxurious, and exclusive club in the city!” She cheered.
I didn’t share her enthusiasm, but I knew that we’d have fun, I always have fun with her. She really is the life of the party, and I needed to relax, just like she said. I nodded, pulling on my white, trench coat, and grabbing my white purse. “I’m ready.” I said, not sounding sure.
She grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the house, locking the door and running down to her car. “Let’s go party! You only turn 27 once!” She smiled brightly.
I climbed in the car, and soon we were pulling out and driving to the club. I was still pretty new to the city, only moving here this past year. Since I moved in, I’ve been a homebody, besides going in to work. I’m a doctor at one of the smaller hospitals in town, and honestly I love my job. Though, I’ve seen a lot more injuries here than I ever did back home. We pulled up to the club she’s been raving about and I couldn’t help but stare in awe. Huge glowing letters that read out, “Club Romano.” shone brightly above the main door. A line wrapped around the side of the building, and as we peeked inside, I could see that it was full of people dancing, and drinking.
We got out of the car and I began to make my way to the back of the line. “Where are you going? We’re on the VIP list!” She cheered, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the front of the line.
“How did you manage that?” I asked, as she dragged me behind her.
“I know a guy, and the guy I know, knows the owners!” She smirked. “Now come on, stop dragging your feet.” As we stepped up to the door the guard looked over us.
“Names?” He asked, his eyes scanning us, then his list.
“Heather Wright, and Maisie Wilson!” She smiled up at him, looping her arm with mine.
“Alright, looks like you guys are VIP, welcome to club Romano.” He said, lifting the rope and allowing us to step inside.
Heather dragged me in, and as she did I couldn’t help but cringe. The loud music, and stench of alcohol filled the air. The bright lights flashed, as people crowded the dance floor. “Alright, I’m going to get us some drinks, go sit at that table!” She said, pointing out a table right next to the dance floor.
I nodded, walking over and taking a seat, I waited for what felt like forever before she came back. She had a platter filled with shots, and nachos. She sat it down in the center of our table. “Alright, there are four for each of us!” She cheered, grabbing the first one and downing it, just what have I gotten myself in to?
