Enzo and I helped him into bed, and I ran out, grabbing all of my stuff, including all of the things I need to stitch him up. “Okay, I need to get you some lidocaine for the pain.. then stitch you up, you were just here with Mikey, so you know the drill..” I said, my hands shaking slightly. I looked down at them, they were covered in blood, once again, I was covered in blood. Why did I think I could do this? This profession had made me relive that night, my mind a foggy mess. I washed my hands, scrubbing all of the blood off.
Once my hands were clean I pulled on some gloves, grabbing a syringe and the lidocaine. I carefully injected it into Angelo, before getting all of my sterilized equipment ready. He looked up at me, smiling softly. “I’m alright, all numbed up.”
I nodded, leaning over him a little and stitching up the gash. I grabbed some ointment, and gauze, and quickly bandaged up his head, wrapping it up tightly. “Alright, now I’m taking you back for an mri, ct scan, and X-rays.” I said, rolling up the chair again.
“Doc, I told you, I’m fine.” He said, smiling over at me.
“Sorry if a medical professional would rather run tests than to take your word for it! I’m sure that even if you weren’t fine, you wouldn’t want to cause a fuss, so instead you’d tell everyone you were okay, even if you weren’t.” I sighed. “Don’t make me strap you to the bed and push you around this hospital!” I threatened, my face stoic as I looked over him.
A slight chuckle erupted from him. “Fine..” he said, groaning as he stood up carefully, and sat down in the wheelchair.
“Thank you..” I let out a sigh of relief as I pushed the chair through the hall taking him back to the radiology department. Soon all of the scans were completed, and he was back in his room. Enzo went somewhere, taking a phone call, and Angelo had fallen asleep, I assumed he was tired, to be honest, I was getting tired too. I sat in the chair beside his bed, and decided to lean forward, lying on my arms on the bed beside him. I closed my eyes for a minute, only a minute, but found myself drifting off to sleep.
I found myself being dragged into a nightmare, a day that I remembered all too well. I had fallen asleep at the kitchen counter, after cooking and cleaning all day, and ended up burning the food. Robert came home, finding me asleep, and the food burned on the stove. “You stupid bi***!” He shouted, waking me from my sleep with a punch to the side of the head. I fell to the ground, looking up at him. “I’ve been working all day, and you have the fu***** nerve to burn my dinner! You’re such a useless woman!” He shouted, kicking me hard in the stomach.
I fell to my side, grasping my ribs, and crying. “I’m sorry!” I cried, as he reared back, kicking me in the stomach again.
I felt my hair being moved and shot straight up looking around the room. “I’m sorry!” I whimpered in preparation for what I assumed was going to happen.
“What are you sorry for?” Angelo’s gravely voice filled my ears, soothing me instantly.
“Sorry..” I sniffled, sitting up. “Bad dream..” I shook my head standing from my spot and walking out to check and see if Jess had brought me the results. Luckily she had, I looked over them before walking back into the room. “You have a concussion, along with two broken ribs, and a spinal contusion..” I said walking over and setting down the chart on the counter. I rubbed my eyes, still feeling tired.
“Sorry if I woke you up doc..” he said, his voice soft.
I turned towards him. “You didn’t.. like I said, it was a bad dream that woke me up.” I smiled softly, walking over and grabbing a prescription pad. “You’ll be on a similar medicine regiment to Mikey, but for your spine, you’ll have to get plenty of rest.” I walked back over to the chair, filling out the prescription pads, and handing them to him. “I’ll need to run a couple of more scans, more in depth, just to make sure that I’m not missing anything, afterwards you’ll be free to go.”
“Sorry about this Maisie..” he said, his voice still only a feint whisper.
I sat on the bed beside him. “Why on earth are you sorry Angelo? You saved your bambina, no one should ever make you apologize for that. If you hadn’t taken the brunt of that fall, she could have been seriously injured.” I placed my hand on top of his.
“I’m sorry I dragged you in here on your day off.” He said, placing his other hand on top of mine.
“I’d much rather get you checked out properly.. it’s not that I don’t trust other doctors, but I know, that I understand what I’m doing, and I do my job well. I’m glad I was there, your injuries could have been much worse, you’re very lucky!” I said, my eyes meeting his.
“I-I guess I am..” he replied softly.
“Try to get some more rest Angelo, they’ll be ready for the other scans soon..” I stood, walking out of the room, making it to the hallway before I fell slightly against the wall. “No.. not now..” I whimpered. Barely able to hold myself up, I didn’t even notice Enzo walk up beside me.
“Maisie.. are you okay?” He asked, walking in front of me. I was leaned on my side against the wall, not able to hold myself up.
