I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, I just wanted to check on them, they’d been in there a while. When I went to knock on the door, I heard them speaking.
“How did you do that? I’ve had the hardest time getting her to sleep. Aurelio is so easy to put down at night, but Anna normally roams the halls and tries to get her uncles to play with her when we stay the night here. Or at home she tries to get her fathers to play all night. It’s exhausting!” Margo said.
“I’ve always loved kids, always wanted one of my own. Now, I’m happy I didn’t have one with my ex husband.” I heard Maisie’s voice. So she was married before?
“You were married?” Margo asked, mirroring my thoughts exactly.
“I loved him.. I really did, but he turned into a monster. You can’t love a monster.. not while loving yourself. So you pick one.. and I picked the wrong one for a long time. I lost so much with my marriage to him.. my innocence.. my joy.. I’ll never be able to gain those things back..” Maisie’s voice was soft, but full of pain, I wanted so badly to take that pain away. “I-I got pregnant once.. when he found out..” She took in a sharp breath, before pausing for a long moment. “It doesn’t matter now.. I got away from him.. I’m safe now..”
“I’m so sorry that happened to you.” Margo cried.
“I-I..” Maisie whimpered, I could hear the sadness in her voice.
“I know..” Margo said.
I could hear her voice, coming through a choked sob. “Thank you..” Maisie cried.
Da****.. how could anyone hurt her? She was so kind, so pure! He took her innocence.. what did she mean by that? Not only that, but he took her child, he ki**** her child. I turned, stalking back to my office, my brothers watching me as I walked past them, as they all sat in the living room.
They got up, following me into the office and shutting the door behind them. “What’s going on Angelo? You look more angry than usual!” Mikey asked, sitting down in the chair in front of my desk.
I quickly sat in my chair, pulling out my laptop. “I want everyone here to dig up whatever you can find on Maisie’s ex husband. I want his name, his address, his phone number, his email! I want all of it!” I seethed, typing in any information I had on Maisie on my laptop.
“Why? What’s going on?” Marco asked, watching me carefully.
“She was abused.. he ki**** her child..” I said coldly, keeping my attention focused on my laptop.
“What?” Max snapped. “She’s so kind, why would anyone do that to her?”
“He was a monster, and I don’t know about you lot, but I think I want to go monster hunting!” I smirked, looking up at all of them.
They all looked to me, the same fire glinting in their eyes. Maisie wasn’t mine, but no matter what, she was family now, and we take care of our own. Allowing someone who did something so awful to her to continue to live his life with no repercussions, it’s not possible. Once we find him, he’s finished!
{Maisie’s POV}
I was exhausted by the time I made it to the bedroom that Margo said I could sleep in. I messaged Heather, letting her know the plan, and I quickly laid down, crashing out. I was too tired to even hold my eyes open for another second.
The next morning I woke up to the sun pouring in through the window, I groaned sitting up and stretching. I carefully got out of bed, and walked to the conjoining bathroom, doing my business before finding an unopened toothbrush and toothpaste. I brushed my teeth, and scrunched up my curls, allowing them to flow wildly around me.
I made up the bed, stepping out into the hallway. Suddenly little arms wrapped around my leg, squeezing it tightly. As I looked down, there was Anna, her hair done up in pigtails, and the most adorable little pink dress, with lots of frills. She looked up at me, grinning at me. “Mama says your name is Maisie!” She giggled. “May May, May May!” She cheered, bouncing beside me, and holding her arms up to me, waiting for me to pick her up. I swooped down, lifting her into my arms and smiling at her.
“May May?” I asked, as she began to play in my curls again.
She nodded. “You’re May May!” She grinned from ear to ear, and how could I possibly say no to that.
I laughed, carefully packing her down the staircase, and looking around. I could smell something delicious, and so I decided to follow the scent. As I stepped into the kitchen, I could hear sizzling on the stove, meanwhile Angelo stood with a black button up shirt on, the sleeves rolled up to his elbow, his many tattoos on full display. He was wearing a pair of black slacks, and a belt, his shirt tucked into his pants. What threw me off was the pink apron that was tied around him. I let out a slight chuckled, which made him turn at look at me.
The look he had when he first turned to me was serious, angry even, but once he saw Anna and me, it’s like a switch flipped. “Oh, it’s you, and you’ve got the most rotten bambina in the whole world with you!” He chuckled, a deep throaty sound erupting from him.
“Bambina?” I asked, looking down to Anna, who was still playing with my hair.
He nodded, “It’s the Italian word for baby girl, or young girl. We use it as a term of endearment for our sister, and of course our niece!” He turned, picking up a small pancake and handing it to Anna. “Do not tell your mother that I’m sneaking you pancakes before breakfast is ready!” He chuckled.
She laughed, taking the pancake and munching on it. “Okay Uncle Gelo!”
“Uncle Gelo huh?” I asked, walking over to the counter beside him. “Need any help Uncle Gelo?” I looked up to him, and could see his face was slightly red.
“I can manage, you’re our guest, you shouldn’t be helping me cook.” He said, flipping a pancake. They smelled amazing, better than any pancake I’d ever had.
I sat Anna down on the counter, and smiled up at him. “Do you have cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla?” I asked, smiling up at him.
He nodded. “Of course.” He reached up grabbing the vanilla, and powdered sugar from the cabinet in front of him, setting them down beside me. “The butter and cream cheese are in the fridge.”
