On the bike ride home, I watched as my pack members drove past me in cars. Even other Omegas. It's because their parents loved them enough to buy them cars. I would have to get a job, but I would be punished if I missed my duties on the pack land. The humans call it "The Reserve." As if we're a native tribe.
We kind of are and that's what we tell them so we don't look suspicious. But, we aren't directly descended from a tribe, or...not all of us are. It's mainly the higher ups and some of the Omegas.
As I pedaled down the street, I thought about all the things we lied about to the other people in town. All the secrets we've held.
I wonder how many secrets are floating around the pack in general.
I parked my bike next to the front of my house. My father and I share a house with one other Omega family. In total we live with 4 other people. There are 6 of us in this house. Most Omegas house share.
The pack house is reserved for Gammas, Betas, Alpha family, and the Omegas they play with. The Omegas that are considered actual staff have a staff quarters. Sometimes I'm made to sleep there.
I walked into my house to see Alpha Marcus sitting at our dining table. My father, Lucy, Elijah, and the twins were seated too. The only reason he's ever paid us a visit was to speak with my father, the accountant, alone. Sure, we go to the pack house a lot, but he hardly comes here.
"Hey, dad. What's going on?" I stared at my dad who's avoiding my eye contact.
"This is pack business, it doesn't concern humans, Eloise." He finally answered me.
Beta Amber grabbed my arm and led me to my room by force. As soon as I heard her walk away, I cracked my door and focused as hard as I could on what was being said in the dining room. Then, the strangest thing happened.
I could hear everything as if I were in the room with them.
"It has come to my attention that the twins constantly follow my son around." Marcus addressed the room.
"We're sorry about that. We told the girls not to follow him anymore." Lucy groveled.
"It's fine. I'm not angry. I wanted to make sure they have nothing going on next Friday. As you know, that's Luke's birthday." Marcus said with a twinge of hope.
"Is there to be a large birthday party?" Elijah said, obviously intrigued.
I scoffed to myself. They're wanting to marry off one of the twins.
"Yes. The whole pack is invited, but it's not really mandatory. Luke said he didn't want to force everyone to be there. But, it's also the day he'll find his mate. So, we invited the higher ups of four other packs. As your girls are very beautiful, I was hoping to introduce them to some of the other elites. If they find a mate amongst those we've invited, everyone in this room will be raised to the status of Gamma. Their marriages would bring tremendous wealth to our pack." He let his offer sink in.
Lucy would never agree to marry off her daughters just to have a higher status.
"What about Eloise?" Lucy asked, sadly.
"Yes, what about my daughter?" My father finally piped up.
"Well, she's somehow been listening to this entire conversation. She may just be a late bloomer. If she can shift before that night, she can attend as a prospect. If not, she will officially become a staff member."
"Sounds reasonable." Elijah chimed in.
Fuck you, Elijah! How is that reasonable?!
"We must keep the deal about the twins a secret from the rest of the pack. The deal about Eloise should be spread around. Maybe the hazing will make her angry enough for her to..."wolf out" as the kids say." Marcus stood and began to step away from the table.
"Good night everyone." He walked to the door and stopped. "Even you, Eloise. May you fair well in this challenge." I heard the smirk in his voice.
I slammed my door closed as to confirm I heard him. I secretly hoped I'd angered him.
The secrets keep piling up.
I went to sleep without dinner and woke before everyone else. Four in the morning, to be exact. I entered the pack house through the staff entrance and begin getting everything ready for the one meal a day that everyone in the pack is required to eat together, breakfast. Ginny, Ben, and Nina are cooking with me. Ginny is 22 with gorgeous red hair and she's our pastry genius.
Ben is her husband. He's 24 and a lanky version of Clark Kent (Superman). He makes all of the meat. And, Nina is in her late 60's. She's like a grandma to me. Her husband died two years ago. She makes just about everything else. Meanwhile, I am always tasked with making the drinks. From fresh squeezed orange juice to fruit smoothies and everything in between.
We got done cooking by 5:30. Right on schedule. We began to set the table, which we would be doing for the next 30 minutes since it's the size of four huge dining tables glued together. We placed everything on the table from orange scones to the very last plate and everything in between. It was a picture perfect spread as it is every morning.
At 6am, the pack members started filing in. We had to wait until everyone was sat down before we got to sit down and eat. Same thing, every day. When I sat down in the seat that's usually left for me, I noticed someone new was sitting next to me. Luke was sat beside me, nearly touching me. His ocean blue eyes pierced through to my soul as he slightly grinned at me. He then turned his beautiful brunette head to look at Maggie, his flavor of the week.
She flipped her blond hair out of the way as she feigned interest in what he was saying. I zoned out to focus on what he was saying while also eating my food. The Alpha's voice rang out over the pack and it all fell silent.
"I have an announcement to make."
Oh, s**t.
"As you all know, Eloise Reyn has been suspected to be human all these years." He gestured to me.
All heads turned in my direction. I sank down in my seat a little bit.
"Yeah, we know." A Gamma snickered.
The Alpha continued on.
"It was discovered last night that her hearing ability is beginning to show itself. Which means she may be a late bloomer and not a human."
Gasps blanketed the room.
This is so embarrassing.
"So, for the next week and a half leading up to my son's birthday, she will be trying to unlock her wolf. That does not mean anyone must take it easy on her. In fact, continue on with your regularly scheduled programming. But, if she..."wolf's out" on you, please excuse that due to her wolf being locked away for so long. Oh, and if she doesn't unlock her wolf, she will forever be an official staff member."
Everyone waited to see if he'd continue talking, but after a minute or two, they went on about their business. He made my business public to cover the secret he harbors with my family.
