Chapter 1 First encounter
The Sky Bar nestled atop the city's premier hotel in the downtown area, boasting a rooftop garden that offered a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city, capturing its bustling nightlife. Avani enjoyed spending her weekends here with her girlfriends. She appreciated the exquisite and luxurious ambiance of the place, as well as the owner's taste in music. Every night, skilled pianists or bands were invited to perform delightful jazz music. By ten o'clock, Avani would usually be slightly tipsy, but tonight she was sitting soberly on the couch, her brows slightly furrowed, seemingly not in a good mood. "Hey!" The glass was placed on the table with a crisp sound as Avani raised her head, her gaze falling on the faces of the two beautiful women sitting opposite her. "Are you here to drink or play with your phones?" The woman sitting on the right was Mia, Avani's distant wealthy cousin. At the moment, she was engrossed in her phone, a smile playing on her lips. Upon hearing the call, she responded nonchalantly, "Just a moment, just a moment," without lifting her head. On the left was their mutual friend Joey. Although she quickly put down her phone to engage in a serious conversation with Avani, before she could speak, another text message popped up. "Wait a moment," Joey said helplessly, shifting her attention back to the chat box. Avani sighed softly, refilling her glass with half a cup of red wine, complaining, "It's supposed to be a ladies' night, but you're both chatting with your husbands." "You can chat with your future husband too," Mia teased. "Haha, Mateo?" Avani couldn't help but laugh. A week ago, when she was forced to accept the reality of being engaged to that man, her cousin was the first to speak out, saying she couldn't succumb to her parents' wishes for an arranged marriage. But now, just to cope with her situation, she could say such things. "Hmm." "I have nothing in common with him. What would we talk about?" Avani enjoyed everything with a touch of sophistication. She majored in arts management in college and currently managed a high-end coffee bookstore. She was someone who pursued beauty in life with great passion. However, her fiancé was a romanticism-allergic chauvinist who couldn't engage her in any meaningful conversation. Despite his handsome appearance, he failed to capture Avani's heart due to her obsession with aesthetics. To avoid marrying Mateo, she had resisted many times, but her father, in order to revive the family business, disregarded her personal wishes. He even froze a few of her bank cards as a threat. And the ultimate result of this matter was Avani's compromise for money. She had to maintain her affluent lifestyle. As for this unromantic fiancé of hers... She could only endure it. "If you can't communicate at all, wouldn't the marriage be too painful?" Joey, having dealt with her possessive and petty boyfriend, silenced her phone. Upon hearing this, Mia also put down her phone and returned to the conversation. "Do you think she organized this gathering tonight just for us to chat?" She smirked mischievously and lightly nudged Avani with her elbow. "The main purpose is probably to find a handsome guy to have some fun before the engagement, right?" "I just..." Avani swirled her wine glass, admitting frankly, "find men these days increasingly boring. None of them can attract me." As she spoke, a jazz tune came to an end, and the pianist switched to a classical piece, a subtle melancholy permeating the atmosphere. Though the melody was beautiful, it didn't blend well with the lively ambiance of the bar; it was too solemn. Gymnopédie No. 1. Avani recognized this piece because there was a vinyl record of it in her bookstore. She turned her head, curious about the pianist. Despite her frequent visits to Sky, she had never heard anyone play this piece. Since it was a piano performance tonight, Avani first noticed the slender and fair hands gracefully dancing on the keys, their joints distinct, almost like a woman's. Her gaze shifted upward, catching sight of the pianist's immaculate sleeves, broad shoulders, and the sexy Adam's apple... "Wow, this pianist is so handsome," Mia concluded ahead of the others. "He's quite good," Joey agreed. In the dim light, Avani finally saw the pianist's face, characterized by sharp angles, strikingly beautiful like a piece of art, especially his bright eyes, clear as a lake. With the rhythm of the music, the customers in the bar were all captivated, and Avani stopped talking, focusing on the music. However, the bar manager became restless and stood by the stage, glaring at the pianist who wasn't following the planned repertoire, seeming dissatisfied with the performance. When the music ended, scattered applause broke out, and the manager, with an unfriendly tone, called the pianist aside, reprimanding him, "Why didn't you stick to the scheduled program?" The young man stood under the spotlight, his posture noble, exuding an aura of aloofness. He slightly lowered his head, without offering any unnecessary explanations for what had just happened, simply saying, "Sorry, it won't happen again next time." Seeing that he showed no signs of deep reflection, the manager's face fell. "Since you don't like to follow rules, let's end our cooperation here. There's no need for you to come again." The young man pursed his lips slightly, as if struggling internally, before finally speaking up. "But..." "But he plays so well," Suddenly, a woman's voice interrupted their conversation. The young man looked towards the direction of the voice, his gaze pausing for a second on her beautiful face before quickly shifting away. The manager recognized Avani as a regular customer of Sky and immediately put on a polite smile. "Thank you for your appreciation." "It's nice to change styles occasionally," Avani said, coming to the rescue from her table, which was close to where the two were conversing, and since she also liked the piece that had just been played. "I'll suggest it to the boss." "Good, I'll talk to the boss about it." The manager nodded and glanced back at the young man. "You can go now." The young man responded with an "OK," turning towards the backstage area. As he took the second step, his sleeve brushed lightly against Avani's shoulder, making a faint sound that only they could hear. He didn't look at her, but he left two words behind, "Thank you." Because the voice was too soft, Avani wasn't sure if she had misheard, so she turned around, her gaze following his lonely figure until he disappeared. And this scene happened to be witnessed by Mia and Joey, who exchanged a smile, looking like they were waiting for a good show. "Oh, by the way, there will be a singing session at twelve. If you need anything, just let me know," the manager said with a smile. Avani thought for a moment, but she didn't particularly want to listen to any songs. Just as she was about to refuse, Mia suddenly wore a mischievous smile and called the manager over. "By the way, I want to ask..." She whispered, "Can I order any private service?"
