A HOSTILE WELCOME

Esme It had been a hectic morning so far as we had welcomed the new pack into our home. The dining hall was absolutely packed with our pack members attempting to mingle with the new pack. I could tell that the Luna was stressed about it although who could blame her, it was important that everything was perfect for her old pack. Mason had been acting strange all morning, not taking his eyes off of me as if I was some stranger posing a threat. Blaire however was thriving, all of the training we had been doing so far was clearly paying off. She had greeted the new pack with welcome arms and had confidently showed them to their rooms whilst explaining the changes we had put into place for them. She had even explained the training schedule that had been set out for them. I couldn't help but feel a little useless, she wasn't going to need me much longer. Even her fighting training was going well, she had improved massively and soon it would be time for me to step back and let Mason take over. "Hey Essie how is it going?” Logan came behind me, placing his hand on my waist. Brilliant, this was the last thig I wanted. It was happening again, the sparks that flew through my body at his touch, the goose bumps risking on my skin. Why did he have this effect on me? "I'm fine, thanks" I mumbled, turning around to look at him. "I've got better things to do than be here talking to you so if you'll excuse me" I spat before removing his hand from my waist and storming away towards Blaire. My body ached at the removal of his contact against my body but I couldn't let myself think about that now. There was no way that I was going to stand around and engage in polite conversation with him, I was still too angry and hurt at his rejection. I couldn't risk the possibility of being rejected by him again, it hurt too much. There was nothing that he could say right now that would make me feel better, if anything I felt he would probably just add insult to injury. Maybe Blaire would be able to distract me, any task would be better than thinking about Logan. "Hey Blaire, Anything I can do to help?" I asked as I reached her. "Nope, got it all covered" Blaire beamed at me, looking proud with herself. She should be, I was so proud of her. She had come so far in the short time that she had been here. "Oh okay, no worries just thought I would offer my services" I forced, trying to hide the disappointment. It's not that I had wanted her to fail, all I wanted was for her to succeed. I just didn't think that she would be okay without me so fast. "What was that between you and Logan?" She quizzed me, changing the subject. Of course she wanted to talk about the one thing I was trying to avoid. "Nothing" I lied, hoping that would be the end of it. "Okay, that is a blatant lie and you know it" she called me out. "That was not nothing, you are avoiding him and it has got to stop. Pull yourself together for goodness sake Esme, you can't avoid him forever. I know you're upset about what happened but he is here to stay, at least for now. So speak with him!" I stared at my best friend in complete shock. Blaire had never lectured me before, she had always sat back and silently supported me, no matter what I did. "Don't just stand there and stare at me like I am a bloody alien! Esme, get your s**t together. Anyone can see that the guy is crazy about you, even I can and I barely know him! Yes he might have hurt you but give the poor guy a chance to explain! If you're not going to do it for you then do it for my sanity!" She interrupted before I had a chance to say anything. "He is not crazy about me Blaire, I don't know what it is that he wants with me but he does not care about me" I snapped back, annoyed that she had called me out. "Are you f*****g kidding me? You are not stupid Esme so stop acting like it!" Blaire stared at me now expectantly but I had nothing else to say. What was there to say? Logan had all but turned my world upside down since my birthday, in less than 2 weeks, he had left me feeling as confused as ever and I had no idea what to do about it. "Fine, I will speak with him. Just not yet, give me time I'll do it when I am ready, I still can't face it right now" I promised. I just needed some more time, I had to be able to protect myself. "Okay. Just don't leave it until it's too late" Blaire gave in, realising that I was not going to budge on it. - The rest of the day had pretty much passed without any issues and was quite boring seeing as Blaire didn't need any help from me. I had managed to convince Theo to come and train with me for a bit to pass the time, but also to help me avoid Logan. "Well I think its fair to say that I won that" he bragged as we made our way back to the pack house in time for dinner. I hated to admit it but Theo was so much stronger than I had thought and I was impressed. "You were alright I guess" I joked not wanting to big up his ego. I guess all of these fights that he had been getting into had helped him build up his strength, not that it excused his behaviour but at least there was a benefit to it. "Oh yeah, you keep telling yourself that sis. It's okay to lose sometimes you know" He winked at me as we walked through the doors. "Anyway, what do you think about this new pack joining us?" He changed the subject. "They don't seem too bad. I haven't spoken to any of them truth be told so I can't really say much. What about you, what do you think?" I asked as I realised that I should have at least made an effort to welcome the new pack. I had been so distracted by Logan that I hadn't given the new pack a second thought. "I don't really care about them as long as none of them piss me off" he shrugged it off. Making friends wasn't exactly Theo's strongest point, it was something he cared little for so I wasn't surprised that he had no interest in this new pack arriving. As we walked into the dining hall it was heaving, I had never seen so many people in this room at once. It was only going to get busier once Logan's pack arrived. We made our way through the tables of unfamiliar faces to our usual table and greeted our mother before taking our seats. As I looked around the table I noticed that not only was Logan there, but also a few people that I did not know. "Ah good, Just in time guys" James smiled as we sat down. "This is the alpha of the Eclipse pack Eric, the Luna Tamsin and their son Brandon. They will be dining with us for each meal from now on." Brandon looked up from his phone towards my direction and gave me a massive grin. "Hey I am Brandon and you are?" He asked standing up to shake my hand. I could see him looking me up and down as I took his hand in return and allowed myself to take in just how attractive he was. "Hi I'm Esme, it's lovely to meet you" I smiled back. "Well Esme, it is lovely to meet you too. I hope that I will be getting to spend some more time with you" He winked before returning back to his seat. My attention was diverted when I heard a loud growl come from my right and turned around to see Logan aggressively staring Brandon down. What the f**k. "Logan are you okay?" Blaire asked, taken aback by his reaction. Surely this wasn't because Brandon was flirting with me, that would be a complete overreaction. I was not his property. "Sorry, I-if you will excuse me" he stuttered, getting to his feet and walking towards the exit. "Sorry about that Brandon, my son has been feeling a bit out of sorts recently" James apologised, looking embarrassed. Logan How f*****g dare he speak to my mate like that, who did that mutt think that he was? It had taken everything inside of me to not rip into him there and then. The fact that Esme had entertained it had just made it worse and there was no way that I could just sit there and watch the two of them. She was mine and nobody else's. If only she knew that. I knew that I was probably in for a lecture from her at some point but right now I didn't care. I couldn't control it and I hoped that I had sent him the right signal to stay away from my girl. This was going to be a problem if he did not leave my mate alone, he was lucky he had made it away unscathed tonight. I stormed up to my room, not being able to be around that for even a second longer and slammed my door shut behind me. Garrison was itching to get out, to go back and do what I hadn't. "Come on Garrison, you know that we can't" I tried to calm him down, knowing it would only get us into trouble if he didn't. "He wants our mate. He needs to learn to back off and stay away from what is ours" he hissed back in anger. God, did Garrison think that I didn't know that? Of course I knew that but I couldn't afford to mess things up with Esme any further than I already had. "Must pay, Must pay" Garrison urged, clearly no calmer. "Let's go for a run Garrison, get away from here for a bit." - I pulled on my clothes as I shifted out of my wolf form. The run seemed to have calmed Garrison down somewhat and he was no longer pushing through to get to Brandon. I hoped that I wouldn't run into him as I walked back into the pack house and headed to my room. It seemed the coast was clear as I reached the hall to my room and I breathed a sigh of relief. Garrison may be calm now but I could guarantee that if he saw him that would all change. As I approached my bedroom door I noticed a small figure on the floor in front of it. Once I was closer, Esme looked up at me, the anger clear on her face. "Would you like to tell me what the f**k that was about at dinner?" she asked getting up to her feet. Well s**t. I hadn't thought that I was going to have to deal with this just yet. "I don't know what you are talking about " I denied the accusations, not knowing how I could explain the truth to her. "Don't give me that bullshit Logan. I am sick of all these games you are playing" she yelled at me now, getting more frustrated. "Look Logan, I don't know who you th-" I cut her off by crashing my lips down on hers not being able to resist her any longer. It had killed me inside when she had dismissed me earlier, refused to even speak to me. I had never meant to hurt or upset her, I was just trying to do what was right for her. Of course she didn't know that. As Esme returned my kiss I pulled her into me, needing her right there and then. My beautiful mate. My moment of bliss came to an abrupt halt as Esme pulled away from me and I felt a sharp pain against my cheek. "Did you just slap me?" I asked, amused that she had just done that. "Yes I did. Who do you think you are? You pursue me to reject me and then you have the nerve to cause a scene when another guy shows the tiniest bit of interest in me" She yelled as she stepped back from me. Okay I did deserve it, I was f*****g everything up. "Esme I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me but the way that guy was with you, he wanted to get into your pants I could see it" I apologised. I just wanted this to be over, for us to be okay more than anything. "Quite frankly Logan, it is none of your business who wants to get into my pants" she spat as she stared at me in disgust. "It bloody well is my business" I raised my voice now. "No Logan it's not!" I couldn't control myself, I couldn't take it anymore. "I think it is my business when someone is making advances towards my mate!"
